Alright I'm just gonna ask this because this crosses my mind once in a while.
Everyone, what would your reaction be if instead of Mii costumes, we got Melee versions of the first 26 characters that appeared in Melee? They would play exactly the same as they would in Melee with L-Cancelling, wavedashes, the physics would be exactly the same, their stats would be left untouched, Fox and Falco can multishine, etc. I don't expect the answers to be too positive but I could be wrong.
I got the idea when I was looking at Hyper Street Fighter II: Anniversary edition where you can play as old versions of Ryu or Guile. You could take it a step further and add 64 versions of the original 12 or Brawl versions or whatever. I don't know.
I'd be certainly interested, although a bit cautiously. I'm not just thinking about the learning curve Melee has here, which is a considerable obstacle especially with
(who is considered difficult to master even for pros) :
* Melee has a ton of jank. Most of which lead to it still having a fanbase to this day, but there's some that negatively impacted characters:
's sword has a tendency to hit like a wet noodle (partly because they made several mistakes when designing him, such as forgetting to compensate for longer animations. I have to assume the time crunch was behind that) for example.
* Some mechanics would help them, but some would also harm them: the Melee airdodge is a good example since you're put in a helpless state if you do it, making that a potential "Damn it muscle memory" moment. There's also the meteor cancelling - I'm not sure if Ultimate characters would be able to meteor cancel Melee characters' attacks or not. If yes, well,
and
don't care about that (assuming NTSC version of Melee, in PAL they're... weirder).
* The complete lack of buffer and other movement-related aspects could prove to be another "Damn it muscle memory" moment.
On a more positive note, there's potentially a lot of reasons for players to explore the past versions:
*
is the glitchiest character in the game, with
a few of the glitches he has being almost the same as some of OoT's glitches. The amount of glitches and jank present would be potentially a lot of fun for more casual players (even if you're risking a crash or
Ghost Melee) and I'd imagine players doing stuff like Bomb Arrows and other characters' glitches like
's Thunder Jacket would be similar to players back in the day trying out the Black Hole Glitch. Aka. fun side stuff to do (even if some like
's Freeze Glitch can be annoying for the reciever).
* Some mechanics would interest casuals I'd imagine: if Melee characters run and then jump they maintain the horizontal speed during the jump. Brawl and subsuquent games' characters don't. (Like seriously this is something I think Ultimate could've reintroduced.) If anything else it'd be really interesting to explore how they'd fare in Ultimate, and it would give a lot of replay value regardless of how well they do. The same goes for the 64, Brawl and 4 counterparts - they'd still give a lot of replay value even if they vary wildly.
* Schmovement. I mean seriously, who doesn't want to see Ganondorf moonwalk again?
Thanks Official Nintendo of Japan Twitter and Twitter algorithm, very cool!
