To the mods and other staff, as a past mod, I would seriously consider having a thread to discuss future Smash developments once shop closes up here. It doesn't have to be in this section, feel free to lock it up, but it behooves the other threads to have a place to centralize speculation, otherwise it can appropriate threads that are designed for other topics. Even the social one. It only has to be one thread, but it's a useful outlet and a worthwhile partition.

That's what happened before the Smash 4 section was created, and that's what happened in the interim between 4 and the creation of this section (it was a user group, which no longer exist here, but there was still a hub dedicated to future games). As long as I've been here, there's always been a dedicated place to speculate on the future of Smash.
I also think just dropping like, 25-50 new people into the Social thread, which is a thread that barely talks about Smash as is, and has built up its own little community would be extremely awkward.

But that's just my 2 cents.

So, assuming we do get the Direct next week after all, now the million dollar question.

Will we straight up get CP11 shown off, or will it just be a "Tune in on X date for a Sakurai Presents the FINAL challenger!"?

And, will it be the first thing shown off, or the last?
I'm leaning towards a "Tune in on this day" or a "Final Presentation Soon" announcement

The more chaotic answer which I am also thinking is possible is Smash not being mentioned at all in the direct.

Like yeah, not having any section to discuss Smash characters or news kinda takes the Smash out of Smashboards. Might as well just call it boards. I know there’s other hubs like Competitive and Creation threads but those either appeal to completely different demographics of users and/or have other purposes aside from discussion.

The very first response in the comment thread, by Nintendo;
"Please keep in mind that this presentation will include no mention of Challenger Pack 11 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Thank you for your patience."

Ah, yes. "Patience." Truly what the Smash fandom is renowned for.

No that doesn't make sense. I think it they will show the character and maybe a few snippets of gameplay but nothing extensive. I don't think CP11 comes out this month, October is my bet, maybe even November.

While everyone's on the subject, I'll go ahead and say that I plan on leaving once the hype train finally arrives in the station. At the risk of sounding melodramatic...again, I feel like I'm entering a new era in life: I've got a better mental state, getting a new computer, and am nearly ready to finally start making a game like I had wanted to for...2-3 years now I think. Getting rid of one of the things that can just devour all of my brainpower for a day (and keep me up well after I've decided to go to bed like right now. lol) is going to be helpful with this I think.

I don't ever stop thinking about hypothetical Nintendo game design so I may pop up in half a year or longer with some ideas, and you can bet I'll be back when Super Smash Bros. Next Gen's hype train leaves the station.

So yeah, um...Insert a good closing statement here.

If they show it in the Direct, it'll come 2 weeks or so at most afterwards. They stopped doing the "We'll show the character now, available MONTHS later" with Terry, why would they bring it back for CP11 after 6 entire challenger packs of not doing it?

Byleth, Min Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Pythra and Kazuya all came out within 2 weeks of their initial reveal, having CP11 being the odd duck out makes zero sense.

You're right, it doesn't make sense. I know absolutely nobody agrees with me on this but I still feel like CP11 would have been at E3 if we were gonna get it this month, it would be perfect to have gotten both of them out of the way, one of them releasing in late summer, and the other at the beginning of the fall if they were revealed at E3. I also think that June to September is a relatively short gap compared to what we usually get. Thirdly, I believe CP11 is a fighter more complex than Steve because of the deadline, I think they will bring out someone absolutely wacky for the final slot. My current theory is Waluigi but it could be someone crazier than him, I am open to suggestions.

We've already gone over this. You refuse to listen to anyone but your own opinion on this matter so we'll leave it at that.

It's 85 days assuming it drops the 7th/8th. That's actually the average between reveals. Like, dead on the average. Also, Steve to Sephiroth to Pyra was even faster than that.

User warned for this post
Tuesday? Damn, then that sounds like a false alarm, there's our biggest lead lmao
What, because it happened on a Tuesday for a few years in a row? Do you really think some Nintendo executive is shaking their fist at the sky saying "WE HAVE TO RELEASE IT ON A TUESDAY, THE PATTERNS NEED TO BE FOLLOWED. THE PATTERNS!!!"

FYI, there was a direct in September 2016 that was on a Thursday. It took me like 2 minutes to figure this out.

I mean, you've also completely misread what she said.

Maybe wanna go back and read it a few times. She's saying it won't land on a Tuesday because Directs tend to land on Wednesday or Thursday.
I mean it's a stupid statement either way, but I did read it wrong you're right. It doesn't make much difference that I did though.

I mean yeah I am, because people are actually bringing this up seriously. The direct doesn't have to land on a Tuesday.
Except it wasn't taken very seriously.

The flipping post had a "lmao" in it for crying out loud.

Even then it doesn't justify being a jerk.

The thread kind of jumped on you several days in a row. **** like this is how it happens again.

As far as what to do with this thread post CP11 reveal, in my opinion it would be smart to keep the thread open for a brief period after both the reveal and the Sakurai presents have concluded. I would imagine many of us may have some remarks after the fact, and this would be a courteous way to offer closure rather than corralling everyone into a different thread where that may not be appropiate.

Also, I agree with N3ON in that having a separate general speculation thread for any future smash titles is a good idea. Once this thread is closed there should be a link posted to the new section.

Late to the party here with this but I'll offer my two cents on this
  • Who I Want: Asuka, Hades (KI:U), Magolor, Soma Cruz, Miriam, Omega Zero, Bass.EXE, Gilgamesh
  • Who I Think It’ll Be: Asuka, Rayman, or a Phantasy Star rep
  • Who Would Be Possible: Any moderately successful first or third party with content in SSBU, maybe Crash
  • Who I Feel Is Unlikely: A retro character or a Western IP, with the exception of Crash, Rayman, or Doom Slayer
  • Who Would Be Funny: Any obscure anime girlie that gets the soylets screeching
  • Who I Don’t Want: A Fortnite character or a Gen 8 Pokemon, even though I don't think they're very likely
No matter who it is though, odds are they'll be off most peoples' radar. Final characters always are.

We did get Gen 1 and 2 on the 3DS Eshop.

I just wanna play the old GBC trading card game one, that game's oddly nostalgic to me.
That game is still available on the 3DS eShop. So long as you have a 3DS you can still grab it.

apparently games with any sorts of gambling in them such as Pokémon red, blue and yellow or sonic forces etc will all be rated 18+ now in the uk

in before sonic is our M rated rep.
If the console market is ever blessed with a new or returning serious competitor coughsegacough, I hope they snub the eurozone entirely just to stick it to their unaccountable bureaucrats and their infantilizing pedantics.

The difference is jumping to hostility about something you didn't understand is much more embarrassing.

Just take it easy. None of this matters enough to warrant getting worked up.

I'm really curious how Waluigi would be more complex than Steve, considering Steve has 7 resources to keep track of (dirt, wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond, redstone) and has to work with resource management (Down Air and Down Throw needing iron, having enough resources for rails and the minecart itself, TNT), plus 5 various levels of crafted weapons with different strengths AND a crafting table to keep track of that can teleport to you. Not to mention altering the terrain of the stage itself even temporarily by placing blocks and of course the rework of every stage in the game that gets brought up all the time with Steve.

Like I'm not even trying to bash you or anything, I'm legitimately curious. Of course this is assuming Waluigi isn't just for your comment about a wacky character, but it reads like both are true and point to Waluigi.

I did understand what she was saying though, I just didn't understand the exact day. If I did my response would be the same just with "Wednesday" instead of Tuesday.

Because he already exists as an Assist Trophy, Spirits, and Mii Costumes in this game and I think they would probably want to remove a lot of that if he becomes playable, which would require tons of readjusting to the game's code.

Good morning.
I've been seeing people discussing what they'll do once all of this is over, and personally I think I'll stay and use the social thread. I originally joined after Sm4sh's DLC wrapped up and left after the final base game direct, so it's not gonna feel like a huge part of my life is gone now. I enjoy vibing with the community and talk about non-Smash related things just as much if not more than talking about who's next.

With that being said, if any mods are reading this, PLEASE bring back the roster thread. I originally joined so I can share my fan rosters with others since making fan rosters is a pretty big hobby of mine despite how unproductive it is, but it was closed due to heated discussion. After that there was another roster thread but that one felt way too restrictive with its rules, only allowing one post per user, which just wasn't the same. I'd like a balance to be struck if there was ever another thread like this.

Also I genuinely hope the direct is next week because I might not be able to watch it if it's tomorrow

I mean I think the only thing they might remove is the Assist Trophy if they went that route because Min Min and Pyra/Mythra still have their Spirits, and the only Mii Costume piece Waluigi had was his hat, wasn't it?

Well, really, you could make anyone complex if you wanted to. It's just another decision when making a character how much and where complexity is in said character. Hypothetically speaking, the only limit is the creator's, well, creativity.

Regardless, I think the amount of complexity this last character has won't especially effect it by a week give or take. This last guy has had a lot of time in the oven. The only thing I could see at this point giving rise to a greater than average period between smash characters is something like Pokemon Trainer who is actually 3 characters with wholly unique attacks, animations, and stats- something not even Pyra and Mythra boast.

Yeah I'm just saying that Waluigi exists in this game probably more than any other DLC character, and if they hypothetically did add him, I don't think they would want his DLC package to feel worse than everybody else by not even removing a lot of the in game content he already had.

My 3DS stopped working ages ago. I could always emulate it but I sometimes like to just play stuff on actual hardware.
Unfortunate. The A button on my New 3DS XL has become unresponsive in the past month or so and I've been hoping to get a spare and send the other to get fixed while I still can. Seems like the 3DS line breaks down more easily compared to the hardware of previous handhelds.

They're not going to remove anything base game as not everyone buys the DLC. Even if Waluigi ends up as DLC, they'll likely have the AT etc still in the game for those who don't buy the Fighters/Character Passes - otherwise content would be just removed for no reason.

Also, while we know Steve is complex, since Min Min was released after the early-2020 pandemic shenanigans, we've had a character come out pretty systematically and I expect the last one to follow suit.

Good thing Mii costumes and Assist Trophies aren't part of a character pack, so it's not getting the same content. And it wouldn't be the first fighter with an existing spirit. So, in reality, Waluigi fans will walk away with more extensive representation than the other DLC characters, if he's chosen - as he'd be nearly every role in the game at that point.

It wouldn't be for no reason though, even if people don't own the fighter's pass, Waluigi will still show up in their game if they play online. So while the Waluigi AT won't be there, he'll still be playable.

Also, how many people are realisitcally gonna complain about 1/80 AT's being removed. Or 1/100+ spirits being removed. Who's going to collect spirits for a fighter that's playable, and who will care if the AT for a playable fighter is still in the game?

Jesus, why do you people have the same argument with Wah, night after night...
It isn't an argument though. Someone was just responding to my post after I said I thought he would be CP11 and asked why he would be more complex that Steve, I answered him.

It's a *discussion. And one you don't have to be a part of either. If anything you are trying to turn it into an argument.
