The last character doesn't have to be new; for all we know, Byleth could've filled that quota for both passes.

That being said, both Nintendo and Sakurai have given priority to a DLC character solely because they were new. Corrin was added in Smash 4 because Sakurai wanted to rep a newer game in the DLC. Byleth was chosen by Nintendo for presumably the same reasons. Personally, I haven't gotten the "we added them so we could rep a recent release" vibe from any of the five characters added so far, and since Kazuya was the E3 2021 reveal, I feel like now would probably be a better time for a "promotional" character as opposed to TGAs 2020 or E3 2021.

Like I said though, I don't really know where their heads were when they made the second pass. I was thinking maybe Min Min and Pyra weren't new enough to fit the label, but maybe 2017 is close enough for their tastes.

Yeah IK, but I thought the idea was that it was just because there was a cross-promo aspect, but then I started hearing people turn it into that they were just "fresh" picks. Like, Corrin was fresh if you will, but if them being fresh was any kind of factor and it wasn't just because they wanted to plug Fates, then I think there were probably lots of choices who certainly could have aged better than Corrin. Obviously, that wasn't the case and Corrin was never picked for some weird fresh agenda as much as it was just a plug, but I still see them being applied to this non-existent theory which was once that plugs were usually saved to the end..

At any rate, Smash Ultimate has no issue of "aging" considering we have a 2019 character:.

But when speculation focuses on expanding Smash's audience, it thinks bigger than Xenoblade. Way bigger. And not having any sort of representation in Smash already.

I know I haven't gotten a response to this, but let me ask this anyway:

Would you think a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rep had ANY chance of expanding Smash's audience if one never happened? Because XC2 was hit HARD with something I'm gonna call Banjo-Karoolie Syndrome:

• If a character isn't playable yet/game doesn't have a rep yet, figure out every single way this could be justified
• If the character does become playable/game does get a rep, act like you never believed the character/game was some obscure nothing with only -3 fans and instead always thought they were a massive cultural phenomenon with 50 bajillion. Everything else that hasn't become playable yet is still Literal McWhoington, though.

And that's why I believe that Rayman might be the final character from this video. Rayman, including Globox and Barbara, were trophies in Smash 4 modeled by Ubisoft themselves. In Ultimate however, Rayman is the only spirit from his series, excluding the Rabbids from Mario + Rabbids.

All of the main Wonderful 101 characters were trophies in Smash 4.

However, in Ultimate, only Wonder Red and Wonder Blue appear as spirits, and only the latter has a spirit battle.

they built ultimate using sm4sh as a base instead of starting from scratch like every other installment. and you can tell tbh, its basically a port

you can't have your cake and eat it too. you can either have this roster have almost every stage and every character or you can get a new game from the ground up if if bothers you so much. also the most unstable game in the series is melee not smash 4, ultimate or brawl.

Sephiroth isn't even that popular of a character though. He was the main villain of one final fantasy game. Literally nobody ever talked about him in speculation.

Personally, I expect an older third-party before something that could qualify as SMTV promotion.

Nintendo treats their third-parties differently than their first-parties. We've never gotten a third-party who was added within a year or less after their last major game launched. Relevancy doesn't seem to matter to Nintendo when they choose third-parties, whereas Sakurai has explicitly stated that certain first-parties have gotten in solely because they were new.

It "could" be his big break, but you're taking a huge gamble hoping he's that last slot. If he is, good for him. If he isn't, then his chances are immediately back to being a terrible furry war.
