nahobino’s would be blue, not purple so he probably wouldn’t fit this. That’s assuming the last background for the last character is purple which we have no concrete proof anyways. I wouldn’t even take this seriously. It’s just a theory from what I understand of the original source.

He is a bluish purple for his in-game model(which is what they would use). His art is more light blue(although that would still work very well).

Nahobino is too blue to have a blue background. Joker doesn’t have a black background for precisely that reason.

Again, photoshop Nahobino into this color background and you will see how well he fits.

An important thing to note is that while the background is purple, it doesn't necessarily match the character. Roy has a green background and Inkling has magenta.

I can think off a few characters who fit the background purple assuming the last character is associated with purple.

shadow- his chaos Control in game makes the screen purple. I’d assume if he gets in smash then his chaos control would remain purple so they’d wanna use the purple associated with one of his most important moves as his background

waluigi- assuming the take the root of fan demand character and go with waluigi then he’d fit because his whole character is purple

king boo- his crown is purple, his eyes purple appearance is his main thing associated with him.

they are some characters I could think off who have a direct tie into the colour purple. The character itself though doesn’t have to have any ties to the colour purple.

Waluigi would likely have a blue background(like Nahobino’s shade). You don’t put purple characters in purple backgrounds so they blend into the background, you put characters in a background that allows the character to stand out while not clashing with that color(purple goes with blue and Waluigi’s design has some blue in it).

The color theory was only ever in doubt when pass 2 started. Now that we are at the final character and color theory is still right it was a forgone conclusion that color theory was right to the end.

MH and RE were much smaller in 2012 (when Megaman was choose) and end 2014 (when Ryu was likely choose). After Ryu was put in Smash 4, both RE and MH grown up a lot in popularity. MH got Generations (+ Ultimate) World and Rise, while RE got VII, 2R, 3R, Village and various ports of old games to modern systems. This is an approximation of sales for these 4 IPs by end 2014.

Monster Hunter - 33.6
Street Fighter - 38.7
Megaman - 34.5

Plus, Ryu and Megaman was Sakurai decision while I as I said before, RE will get someday the full representation in smash. The IP is really popular and Capcom doesn’t stop milking it. Its an annual franchise with multiple titles in development.

OK folks, I finished looking at Martin's colors!
So here are the results:
For reference, here is Martin's graph again.

Let's start with the colors he categorized as "Colors within Statistical Range"
There were two colors that resembled purple, or Dark Orchid to go off that GameFAQs leak, the most compared to the others, this being Electric Violet (first row, 4th from left), and Wisteria (second row, 1st from left).

Dark Orchid's hex code (or main one at least that I could find on Google) is 9932CC. RGB 153 50 204
Electric Violet's hex code is C910FF. RGB 201 16 255
Wisteria's hex code is B06EBA. RGB 176 110 186.

So going off of the hex codes, I believe Wisteria slightly resembles Dark Orchid more, but Martin's colors still stand.

Now let's look at the two shades of purple "Outside Statistical Range"
The first color from the left is a darker shade of Electric Violet. Its hex code is 9C15FF.
The second is yet another Electric Violet shade with hex code 8700EA.

I think this more clearly lets us see why Dark Orchid statistically aligns with Wisteria.

Given the strong association Mega Man had with Nintendo from the first 7 classic games, (and the various spin-off ones on the handhelds), him getting the nod over more profitable choices made sense. Even beyond being an NES icon, realistically he also probably less expensive to get because the series was in such a troubled period, and any notable appearance by him was the kind of good press the franchise desperately needed.

He has pinkish purple in his design, not purple.

His vest and his hair also aren’t purple or pink, so he doesn’t disappear into the background at all.

Waluigi has a purple hat(very little hair showing), and a purple shirt with dark blue almost purple overalls, his entire top half of clothing would disappear in a purple background.
