well F in the chat to Battletoad fans ig
Not entirely sure what that means but I haven’t given up hope even though this turned out to be nothing. There are still the Phil Spencer hints and Microsoft seems to have been featuring Rash more in promotional images recently. I’m not saying they are definitely happening but I definitely think there is at least some chance.

Look, I've been saying SMT has been a shoe-in for years.

I've also been wrong for years, granted.
Literally every Smash fan, it feels like.

Is it just me, or have I been taking more jabs at the Smash fanbase lately?

on the other hand, Nintendo can solve that latter issue by going the Call of Duty route by dedicating more of their companies to developing Smash 6).
This is cool but at the same time it's not worth having the Activision CoD mines meme become the Nintendo Smash mines meme.

Pretty sure it's been noted in here that Tencent doesn't own SNK. Paging our resident foreign markets expert SKX31 SKX31 for cross-checking.
Wrong Chinese company. It's actually 37Games that owns SNK, not Tencent.

The confusion probably stems from the fact that 37Games bought SNK through its investment in Ledo Millennium, which used to be a subsidiary of a company (Leyou) that was later bought by Tencent. It's possible that Tencent owns a minority stake on SNK through this (or just by general investing, as it's sadly something Tencent does a lot of), but it's not owned or controlled by Tencent like Riot is.

I've mentioned this idea before, but I think it would be cool if a Capcom Vs. stage had a character's "theme" play once they reach their last stock, similarly to how it works in the Marvel vs. Capcom games. Today I decided to try my hand at a list of these themes:
Mario: Ground Theme/Underground Theme

Donkey Kong: Jungle Level (Brawl)

Link: Main Theme – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Samus: Title Theme – Metroid

Dark Samus: Brinstar Depths

Yoshi: Obstacle Course

Kirby: Green Greens (Melee)

Fox: Main Theme – Star Fox 64 (Brawl)

Pikachu: Main Theme – Pokémon Red & Pokémon Blue (Brawl)

Luigi: Main Theme – Luigi’s Mansion

Ness: Smiles and Tears

Captain Falcon: Mute City (for 3Ds / Wii U)

Jigglypuff: Pokémon Red / Pokémon Blue Medley

Peach: Slide [Remix]

Daisy: Stadium Theme – Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

Bowser: King Bowser – Super Mario Bros. 3

Ice Climbers: Ice Climber (Brawl)

Sheik: Gerudo Valley [Remix]

Zelda: Ballad of the Goddess [Original]

Dr. Mario: Fever

Pichu: Pokémon Gold / Pokémon Silver Medley

Falco: Corneria – Star Fox Zero

Marth: Fire Emblem Theme

Lucina: Destiny (Ablaze)

Young Link: Termina Field [Remix]

Ganondorf: Dark World (for 3Ds / Wii U)

Mewtwo: Victory Road – Pokémon Ruby / Pokémon Sapphire

Roy: Beyond Distant Skies – Roy’s Departure

Chrom: Conquest (Ablaze)

Mr. Game & Watch: Flat Zone 2

Meta Knight: Meta Knight’s Revenge

Pit: Underworld

Dark Pit: Dark Pit’s Theme

Zero Suit Samus: Theme of Samus Aran, Space Warrior

Wario: WarioWare, Inc. Medley

Snake: Snake Eater

Ike: Eternal Bond

Pokémon Trainer: Battle! (Wild Pokémon) – Pokémon Ruby / Pokémon Sapphire

Diddy Kong: The Map Page / Bonus Level [Remix]

Lucas: Unfounded Revenge / Smashing Song of Praise

Sonic: Green Hill Zone

King Dedede: King Dedede’s Theme (Brawl)

Olimar: Main Theme – Pikmin [Remix]

Alph: Mission Mode – Pikmin 3

Lucario: Battle! (Wild Pokémon) Pokémon Diamond / Pokémon Pearl

R.O.B.: Stack-Up/Gyromite

Toon Link: Main Theme – The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

Wolf: Star Wolf’s Theme / Sector Z

Villager: Title Theme – Animal Crossing

Mega Man: Mega Man 2 Medley

Wii Fit Trainer: Main Menu – Wii Fit

Rosalina & Luma: Rosalina in the Observatory / Luma’s Theme

Little Mac: Jogging / Countdown

Greninja: Battle! (Trainer) Pokémon X / Pokémon Y

Mii Fighters: Battlefield

Palutena: Destroyed Skyworld

PAC-Man: PAC-Man’s Park / Block Town

Robin: ID (Purpose)

Shulk: You Will Know Our Names

Bowser Jr.: Delfino Plaza

Koopalings: Airship Theme – Super Mario Bros. 3

Duck Hunt: Duck Hunt Medley

Ryu: Ryu Stage

Ken: Ken Stage

Cloud: Fight On!

Corrin: Lost in Thoughts All Alone (for 3Ds / Wii U)

Bayonetta: Let’s Hit the Climax!

Inkling: Splattack! [Original]

Ridley: Vs. Ridley (Brawl)

Simon: Bloody Tears / Monster Dance

Richter: Divine Bloodlines

King K. Rool: Gangplank Galleon

Isabelle: Tour – Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Incineroar: Battle! (Island Kahuna)

Piranha Plant: Underground Theme

Joker: Last Surprise

Hero (Dragon Quest XI): The Hero Goes Forth with a Determination

Hero (Dragon Quest III): Adventure – Dragon Quest III

Hero (Dragon Quest IV): Battle for the Glory – Dragon Quest IV

Hero (Dragon Quest VIII): War Cry

Terry: Kurikinton

Banjo & Kazooie: Main Theme – Banjo-Kazooie

Byleth: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Main Theme

Min Min: Ramen Bowl

Steve (& Alex): Halland / Dalarna

Zombie (& Enderman): The Arch-Illager

Sephiroth: Advent: One-Winged Angel

Pyra/Mythra: Counterattack

Kazuya: Kazuya Mishima, Devil Kazuya [Remix]

The Miis Fighters do have a Mii related theme on the website, but to be consistant with the game itself they have a Super Smash Bros. theme.

Nah, the point is that you can represent a franchise's history with a single character.
That's your point, not his. So it's not really valid to go "That's like if..." followed by an example that's nothing like the one he gave.

If you'd said, like, Noctis, that would be a Nahobino equivalent(though FF16 protag would be more accurate). Simon and Snake are not.

If level 5 was to get a rep as the last character who do you think it would be. Layton or jibanyan?.

Trying to keep my biasness out I personally think I could see Layton getting the edge because we don’t have a puzzle genre rep in smash yet and because it’s the franchise that gave level 5 their big break and got them to where they are today.

Would be happy with any level 5 content in smash but I could just about see sakurai pushing for layton.
as a MASSIVE yokai watch fan, Layton 100% has a better shot in my opinion, Layton never shook like all of Japan like yokai watch did but it's stayed a much much more stable series for a longer time and has a much larger world wide audience

realistically i don't see either happening unfortunately but if i had to put money on which would show up in some form (mii costume, spirit event, character) it'd be Layton almost for sure

I suppose it's kind of a given that most of them are the same, but there are a few interesting differences:
  • You picked the Pokémon Center theme for Jigglypuff, and that seems to be what Super Smash Bros. has picked as well, but I thought it would be fitting if the balloon Pokémon had the Poké Floats theme.
  • It's actually interesting that we both picked the same Zero Suit Samus themes since we both could have gave Samus's theme to either version of Samus.
  • You picked Stickerbrush Symphony for Diddy Kong instead of The Map Page / Bonus Level [Remix], and I think I agree with that decision more actually.
  • I didn't pick Garden of Hope for Alph because I couldn't remember if it was for a Pikmin 3 Area...Which is a little silly since it's a stage full of Pikmin 3 stuff.
  • I was very close to picking the same track for Pokémon Trainer as you, but I opted for a theme that sounded more like a battle theme. There honestly weren't too many good choices left for that though.
  • You picked Xenoblade Chronicles Medley and Splattack! [Remix] for Shulk and Inkling respectively, which is probably the more realistic pick, but I freaking hate those tracks so I picked something different. lol
    • Ironically, I also really dislike the Counterattack remix, but picked it anyway since the track itself is objectively the best fit.
  • You picked Bayonetta's actual theme, but I picked Let's Hit the Climax! since because it was more fitting in the context of a character's triumphant comeback theme.

Ah **** here we go again

Fingers crossed it’s a duo though… namely Off the Hook… 👀
I made a long twitter thread talking about the placeholders and clarifying some stuff. So if you like reading stuff... well... here you go :D.

You appear to acknowledge that the point still stands, so you're just nitpicking for the hell of it. Have fun, I guess.

16 placeholders in WoL for DLC fighters? Is that what I’m reading?

I may be wrong on that assumption but if we’re basing this on unique models (again I could be wrong on this)
1) Piranha Plant
2) Joker
3) Hero
4) Erdrick
5) DQ 8 Protag
6) The other DQ Protag (sorry I forgot lol)
7) Banjo-Kazooie
8) Terry
9) Byleth (Male)
10) Byleth (Female)
11) Min Min
12) Steve (I think the other Steve alts would fit here?)
13) Sephiroth
14) Pyra
15) Mythra
16) Kazuya

is this right? Or am I reading too much into a non-important fact?

Alex and Enderman have different models from Steve. It would also imply that they didn't make enough placeholders for their characters which would be odd.

The placeholders are actually for fighters and doesn't include fighter skins.

To give context, I essentially gave a response on twitter as to why the placeholders are most likely there and why the team probably chose the amount they did.

The TL;DR is, there's some evidence that the placeholders were put in there for parity with the user interface, rather than just "the amount of characters we could produce."

Strange, why wait a day? Seems like stalling to ignite speculation for a few hours to me.

Are there any characters that could be aside from another Pokemon trainer? That seems to be the only thing that fits well.

Though I would dream of a Phoenix, Apollo, and Edgeworth 3 in 1.
Or Giegue, Porky, and the Masked Man to represent each game in the Mother series respectively.

Edit: By the power of eyes, I have seen that this thread already has more viable ideas for a 3 in 1. My question is redundant.
Perhaps Pacifist, Neutral, and Genocide Frisk could have separate movesets, and therefore slots? Not how I would do their moveset, but I've seen others that do.

Not related to anything but when I was playing the 2010s tournament, I noticed that how many female characters are in that particular batch of newcomers compared to previous decades.

Just compare
The guys: :ultdarkpit::ultchrom::ultrobin::ultjoker::ultsteve::ultcorrin::ultshulk::ulthero::ultbyleth::ultinklingboy::ultalph:
To girls: :ultalex::ultrobinf::ultcorrinf::ultbylethf::ultinkling::ultisabelle::ultpyra::ultmythra::ultminmin:ultlucina:

Just something amusing no note, as the 2000s are the only one who comes close.

Just out of curiosity, would Kyo have different mechanics from Terry since he's attached to King of Fighters, and Terry seems to be focused on Fatal Fury specifically?
Potentially Max Mode instead of GO! time. I remember thinking Terry was gonna get Max Mode since Geese got it in Tekken 7. Basically it lets you cancel out of attacks upon activation as well as boosting up special moves for a limited time. I'm bad at using it, but I think that's the basics. Other than that, Kyo's usually a Rekka character, so that'd be unique to him, even if its more of a playstyle thing and less of a mechanic.

Y'know, I actually reckon there's going to be some sort of DLC content after FP2, even if not characters.

Taking a similar stance to something like in Sm4sh, it's actually pretty feasible that new stages could be added, maybe some more Mii Fighter costumes and most excitingly, more Echo Fighters if any were to be added. It just strikes me as odd that it seemed to be such a big thing when, in truth, there's actually not that many Echoes in general.

That aside, we can say with reasonable certainty that they're probably going to continue with patches and maybe Spirit events. The thing is, I don't see Nintendo just leaving one of the best-selling games on the Switch behind unless they were working on a new Smash project, which is at best very, very unlikely - especially with how they're saying they want to keep the console active for a pretty long time. As such, stuff like new stages, music and maybe echoes would probably not require too much work or direct input - maybe not in the form of an "echo pass" like some people suggested, but as a smaller side thing... though I'd say if any third-parties get in on this hypothetical Echo DLC, probably Sega and Capcom to be honest seems as they appear easy to work with.

I don't think it helps that a lot of the DLC characters have, by nature, been incredibly complex to make - most notably Hero, Terry to a lesser extent, Min Min, Steve and now Kazuya. Hence, Echoes could probably be tossed out without too much development time or overly high fanfare - with the most derivative being something a little like Ken. Though I know it's wishful thinking, it is a way I can see Nintendo continuing to keep the game alive without too much work, but in a way I can imagine fans might enjoy!
Eh, maybe a stage or two. We did get that with the last game after all. As much as I would like Echoes(Read: Protoman or Bass) I'm not holding my breath. Actually, outside of Protoman and Bass, maybe Jin or Rock or Akuma could be echoes. There's obviously even more options than that, but you get the gist of it.

Well we got: Mario Mario, Luigi Mario, Peach Toadstool, the Koopalings (7) Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Samus Aran, the Star Foxes (3), Sonic the Hedgehog, Cloud Strife, King K. Rool, Byleth Eisner, Ken Masters, the Belmonts (2), Terry Bogard, Minecraft Steve/Minecraft Alex, and Kazuya Mishima.

Bonuses (non-canons): Marth Lowell, Ganondorf Dragmire, and Captain Falcon (whose real name is either Douglas Jay Falcon or Andy Summer). Oh, and Joker, whose real name is either Ren Amamiya or Akira Kurusu.
Mega Man's last name is Light depending on the version. So that sorta counts too. And I think a manga refers to Ryu's last name as Hoshi.

Though it can still be looked at as having content in Smash due to Persona.
The MegaTen franchise has content in Smash. The specific SMT series currently does not.

Like how the Final Fantasy franchise has content in Smash, but the Final Fantasy Tactics series does not.

And I think a manga refers to Ryu's last name as Hoshi.
An incredibly non-canon manga. Ryu expressly doesn't have a last name in Street Fighter.

This made me realize DK is the only franchise to lose TWO stages, Jungle Hijinx and Rumble Falls. Oof.
Mario lost three: Mushroom Kingdom Melee, Mushroomy Kingdom 1-2, Rainbow Road
Metroid lost two: Planet Zebes, Pyrosphere
Star Fox lost two: Sector Z, Orbital Gate Assault

Could also count Game & Watch losing the separate versions of the Flat Zones but eh.
