I kind of want someone to make a AAA JRPG thats a complete subversion of the entire genre tbh. Does that exist?

Like, the Doki Doki Literature Club of JRPGs. Something highly self-aware and bat**** insane (and genuinely funny).

Doki Doki Literature Club is the only visual novel I've played btw.

So out of the topic of JRPGs, how about we do this topic?

Which enemy from a Nintendo game scared you most? And I won't say which ones are most prominent in the reply section.

I can't think of a AAA example, but if considering anything including indie games, there's Undertale.

Maybe it's because I play a fair amount of different genres so most choices kinda appeal to me, but still.
This is what it mostly boils down to and why it kind of frustrates me when people act like it's stupid to suggest that it'd be cool to see a new genre in Smash speaking in broad terms. A lot of the time people will kneejerk react to what sounds like a "quota" and dismiss it as not important when it fails to acknowledge that some people just play other kinds of games that have never been given that fair shake.

Which is why, like what was mentioned before, it frustrates me even more that people use the genre thing toward platformers of all genres. It really trivializes what I personally stand for when desiring more variety and a wider spread of game types because people just use it to be like, RPGs lame platformers cool. When personally I'm kind of tired of both of them getting precedent over every other kind of game. Although to be fair, those labels are incredibly vague.

Don't get me wrong either, I'm not trying to put you in particular on blast SNEKeater because I agree with what you said for the most part. I'm just using this as a springboard to vent further about the trivialization and misunderstanding of what I mean when I suggest that like, I want a puzzle character or a rhythm character or whatever. I have my preferences within that sphere but chances are I'd be happy to get not only the first actual character from a kind of game that I'm much more actively invested in but also a style of game that offers brand new gameplay opportunities untapped by any character we've seen thus far. Something more emblematic of my own gaming experiences while also providing a new voice among the roster.

So it's just lame that when I say something like "I'm tired of seeing one genre get all the love" most of the pushback I get is from... people who really like JRPGs or platformers or actively support characters from those genres. If the scenario was flipped I think everyone would be a lot more empathetic. But as I've said in the past, it's just on me for preferring weird ass niche games lmao.

The game called "Nintendo Direct" had an horrible enemy called "drought" to this day, it was the enemy that took the longest to beat and I hate it. Never want to play this game again. That or "E3 2015" with the game "Developper Stories" where we had to fight against 10 min of someone talking about wool in Yoshi.

Undertale is the only thing I can think of that fits the bill (and even then it's not exactly AAA)

Hmmm, not sure, though when I was a little kid, I used to be scared of going into the water in video games due to having no means of defending myself (it even used to carry over to Majora's Mask; I couldn't bear getting into the water with those bone fish around).

I haven't played it myself, but maybe something like Yakuza: Like a Dragon? I've heard really good things about it and from what I hear it's in a lot of ways both a loveletter and subversion to common JRPG tropes and such.

Idk JRPG isn’t as clearly defined as it used to be. It’s a big genre, and in my opinion there isn’t that much difference between how Kingdom Hears is played vs Devil may cry, but I don’t see too many people defining the latter as a jrpg.
If anything games just have multiple genres that define them in order to narrow down exactly what they are.

It's not AAA, but have you ever heard of a game called OFF?

Like a Dragon is pretty unconventional but I wouldn't call it a complete subversion of the genre, given how tied it is to the classics of the genre both mechanically and thematically.

SMT Nocturne is one of the closest "anti-JRPG" games made by a semi-big studio. If we're counting indies, I'd say OFF is also a pretty good example.

EDIT: :ultgreninja:'d.

Understandable, but for this game I'd rather have CoD guy than another RPG or platformer character (even Crash), if only out of principle.
Please tell me you’re joking

Crash fits the qualifications of Smash far more than anything CoD related.I’m sure we could think of someone more unique to the gun class than CoD

I mean, sure...?

Steve is more of a Sandbox rep to me, sandbox games being "free to do whatever" games.

Like the GTA games. (CJ for smash btw 0_o)
Since you're interested in a GTA rep, do I have the thing for you:

BTW That isn't mine.

Does this guy count?

It's the Water Wraith.
You can't do a thing to it because it's in a dungeon you can only access with Blue Pikmin because the entrance is underwater. It shows up after a while with a particular soundbite to let you know it's just dropped in. Dungeons are kinda cramped so you have little room to manoeuvre.

It's also the final boss of the dungeon where you throw any Pikmin you have left into a purple flower to get purple Pikmin because they're the only ones that can harm it.

It's some pretty good horror whilst keeping it kid friendly.

No, I am not joking, since we really could use some gun reps (which would offer more uniqueness; even CoD guy can provide that); plus, I'm advocating for CoD getting in before Crash out of principle. I will admit, however, that there are candidates more unique than CoD (such as Master Chief or Sergeant Cortez).

The reason that I bring up Ryu Hayabusa a lot is that he is a pick that fits with nearly everyone:

1. He is popular in both Japan and the West
2. He has been around since the 1980s so older Smash players will have fond memories of him but he is also popular today
3. He would have a unique move set (Ninja style play)
4. He completes the big original NES titles lineup: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Megaman, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear
5. He is from a company that is highly supportive of Nintendo but isn't on Nintendo consoles currently

He checks nearly every box. Because of that, though, I doubt he makes it. Sakurai has a tendency to NOT pick the characters that make the most sense.
