(I searched and saw an older thread, but I'm not reviving that since it's from 2009).

Diddy Kong Racing. One of my favorite N64 racers of all time.

For those of you who don't know this game, it's simple. An evil pig named Wizpig has taken over Timber's island. You must defeat every place, get every balloon, get every silver coin, and beat every boss twice to complete the game. There are two unlockable characters in the game: T.T. and Drumstick.
There are 4 worlds plus and unlockable one, each with 4 tracks, a boss battle, and a battle.
You get three choices of vehicles: plane, kart, and hovercraft. Karts excels on the ground, planes excels in the air, and hovercrafts excel in the water.
Banjo and Conker debut in this game and will later on have their own games.

Discuss away!

I only played this game a couple of times, it seemed like most of my "karting experience" was done on Mario's game. Something I didn't know though is that Banjo and Conker originated on this game. I always thought it was weird seeing Banjo in the game seeing as I thought his game came out earlier than DKR. Interesting to see its the opposite.

How is the DS version? Any better/worse than the N64 classic?
It's not as good IMO.

Everyone sounds more mature, Banjo and Conker are replaced with Dixie and an older Tiny, you use the stylus to rev the kart and the plane (you blow into the mike for the hovercraft), T.T. is dumbed down, despite what it says on his stats, and my biggest pet peeve, TAJ'S VOICE. He doesn't sound Indian anymore D:

I always loved how Conker is so friendly and nice in this game, and then you see how he is in Conker's Bad Fur Day. :surprised:

Plus they changed the physics, took silver coins out of adventure mode, shrunk Taj and Wizpig to make them playable and made everything way too easy with vehicle upgrades (try playing as Taj in a maxed out speed hovercraft. You can't control him in the slightest and you still win every race). Oh, and you can shoot yourself with homing missiles and can't get rid of them without doing so.

In short, don't play the DS version, they ruined it.

lmfao it took me so ****ing long to finally get out TT
Beating TT was easy once I tried. It's beating him on Adventure Two's Silver Coins that's a challenge.

TT is a BEAST in time trials on the N64. I remember I recorded myself doing time trials with TT lol

A few of them were slightly tough and doing them in the wrong vehicle is nigh impossible but for the most they were really rather easy. Wizpig was more of a challenge but both times it was simply a case of getting to know the track.

I like both Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing as they both offer a superior single-player experience than Mario Kart 64.

When I had to go with my ex to her house, my time was spent deleted my save data and speed running through it and unlocking everything before we left.

I miss this game....
I remember doing all sorts of odd code combinations after I unlocked everything and beat the staff times.

For example, I turned all rainbow balloons on and maximum power up.
Funny stuff.

Also, TT is borderline broken.

What doesn't?

EDIT: only thing I can think of is the four player only "Four Swords"...

Yep. A little hard to control if you're used to Tiptup and no drifting though.

I spent too much time getting a 100% in this game.

Getting T.T was pretty hard yeah.

Silver coin challenges in adventure 2 made me rage.

Beating Wizpig was so satisfying when I first played this. Actually, even when I played through the game over the Summer, it still took me a while to beat the first race. :x

The silver coin challenges were what made this game amazing for me. Too bad you couldn't go back and replay them after beating them...

The first race?

I hope you don't mean the very first race in the game. That one is ridiculously easy.

The first Wizpig race on the other hand is ridiculously hard. It's weird that the second Wizpig race isn't nearly as hard as the first one.

One of the great things about Nintendo 64 games is that they’re still so reasonably priced relatively speaking. For example, Diddy Kong Racing can usually be purchased for around ten bucks or less so there’s no legitimate reason to deny your self the pleasure of adding it to your library of games.

Yea, the second race isn't as hard. It's dodging everything. THAT'S the challenge in the second race.

Did I really phrase it that poorly? I definitely meant the first Wizpig race. :x

And yeah, the first Wizpig race was certainly much more difficult than the second one. I found that making even slight mistakes in the way you hit a booster/landed a jump usually meant a loss in the first race, but the second one was much more forgiving. The fact that the second race gave you items made it even easier.

I found items were mainly a distraction in the second one. Sure, a 3rd level green boost with the right flight path would get you through his throne room quite nicely but you didn't have to go out of your way for them at any point and doing so was almost instant loss.

This game reminds me of how people say Banjo Kazooie is better than SM64 and I can't argue because I've never played it

Hovercraft controls are horrible.
Now that I can agree with!

I wouldn't compare them. SM64 and Banjo Kazooie are both really great games and they play rather similarly but they have a very different feel from one another.

Hopefully I don't curse you with this but...

every time I'm walking and I take a step, I play the Dinosuar Tune boss theme in my head.

@TheGoodDoctor: The N64 hovercraft was awkward but it made sense for that to be the case and I didn't really mind it. They made the controls of every vehicle worse on the DS though, especially the hovercraft, and it became a nightmare.

@IcyDeath: The non-Wizpig boss theme is the same for all 4 of them. It's not unique to Tricky.
