Deaf. Most of modern society is dictated by visual cues. Even though driving is dependent on sight, hearing, and touch, it should still be possible to drive without needing to listen to car horns as long as the driver is familiar with the roads and is extremely careful. It is impossible to drive without sight. Being unable to drive makes you a burden to other individuals. It is impossible to do many jobs without the power of sight, however this is not necessarily true with being deaf. Individuals can be trained in reading lips and can deduce the words that are spoken. Any words that are missed can be filled in with summaries of team-meetings or perhaps by aim-chat. If I had to choose, I could only reconcile being deaf. Being blind is too much of a handicap on me to compensate and too much of a burden on my family to support. I'm interested in how people can seriously consider being blind in our modern society.

Deaf . . . . . though it'd make me upset that I couldn't hear music, nature, effects, etc., I wouldn't need to be a dependent, and I'd be able to still see my present and future family. There are too many important things in life, such as driving, work, finances, etc. that require being able to see.

This one's pretty hard, but I'd choose blind.

Yeah I can't see, but I'd rather listen to music rather than look at art. As long as I'm not blind from birth, I'd be completely ok being blind (I mean, yeah sure it'd take time to get used to, but overall, I'd rather hear). Besides, at least talking isn't that hard when I can hear and talk at the same time. And superhuman hearing ftw

Either one works for me. I guess I'd rather be deaf so that I'd still be capable of actually locating a bridge to throw myself off of.

Seriously, I'd be torn to pieces if I lost either sense. I loooooove music. More than almost anything. But having no sense of sight would destroy me mentally too.

Being born deaf/blind isn't as bad imo of course, but if I suddenly lost one of these two senses I don't know what I'd do with myself. I don't even know if I'd be able to cope.

So to actually answer your question, I think I'd choose to be..........blind. Tough choice though. Really tough.
I can't lose my music. No way! I'd die.

I guess, I'll go blind cause it hightens your other senses to near super human level. :awesome:

But *knock on wood* I enjoy being able to see and hear life's pleasures.

Well, I can't live life without my music. I just can't. I mean, I also want to be a writer, but seeing as I can at least type blindly, I don't really need my sight then. Music though... you know how drab my life would be if I couldn't hear? I'd be as sad as Beethoven was when he was writing Ode to Joy without sound

definitely deaf. Life is way too dependent on sight. Your life style and activities wouldn't change as dramatically.

Probably Deaf... I mean even if my day is actually listening to music all day long. I prefer to be deaf... being blind should feel like you are always sleeping :/ I really don't know since it hasnt happened to me.

but any of those would be tough as hell.

Deaf because:
1) Life relies too much on sight (driving, most jobs, etc)
2) When I get married, I wanna see my kids and watch them grow, rather than only hear them and have to wonder what they look like. Same with my wife.
3) I have some experience with sign language, so it wouldn't be too hard relearning some things and being able to communicate.
4) I can't play most video games if I can't see.

I'd absolutely hate missing music, though. Video game music is one of the things I have the fondest memories of from my youth.

Sight is just too necessary to give up. I'd go with deaf too if I had to.

I actually thought about this with my co-workers one evening last summer, but the opening post made it harder by only choosing between two senses as oppose to all five that my co-workers had debated.

This is definately tough, I guess I'd rather be deaf because it is still possible to communicate with others as long as both parties understand sign language. You can also communicate just be reading and writing so there are ways around not being able to hear despite the fact it would suck.

One of my favorite activities is running. I couldn't possibly do it without sight without the risk of running into things such as cars, trees, potholes etc... I can still run without being able to hear, but I'd just have to know my surroundings more by sight.

Deaf, no question. I would hate not being able to see, never knowing what the sky looks like, or what a person looks like, or what it is truly like to "watch TV." There are alternatives to help deaf people such as sign-language, not much to help a blind person.

My ego...It's OVER 9000!
whats a life without being able to see tities??? Thats not life, thats HELL.
But then you can't hear them bounce, nor her moan. ;)

I'd rather be blind. I can see using all my other senses and I've witnessed and suffered a lot BECAUSE I can see with my eyes.

Edit: Let's all be thankful that we can see AND hear, cause a lot of people can't.

I'd rather be mute than either of these two.

Then I'd have a real reason for not talking instead of the bad excuses I keep telling.

Buuut, between these two, I'd pick blindness.
Books aren't as fun as music.

And besides, how many deaf superheroes do you know? And how many blind ones?
Obviously the deaf people are wimps.

If I was blind I'd be the next Stevie Wonder >:[
After my inevitable depression brought about by my complete loss of eyesight.

But yeah I wonder, what do blind people do for the most part?

Braille books I guess. Obviously they could still hear music.

I'm surprised so many people would choose blindness.

So much of our everyday life depends depends upon our sight.
Don't seeing-eye dogs help out? They're usually trained extensively. And those metal canes they use to tap out their surroundings.

Again, you can still hear, so uh, yeah..

Wherever you want me to be... If you're female.
I am half deaf, and I have trouble hearing lots of things. I think I'd survive if I was fully deaf... I know ASL too :p

Though... one of my greatest loves is music. I can probably only think of 4 things that could move me to tears, and that is one of them... I'm not sure if I'd like being totally deaf.

By the way, there are intersting blind people who seem to be able to move about like a hearing person.

Deaf. It's far easier to function in modern society as a dead person than it is a blind person.

Sure. But nearly all the normal activities you or I carry out on a daily basis (and take for granted) require vision to a huge extent. It's not something you could just adjust to in a couple of weeks or months or longer.

While losing your hearing sucks, I don't think it's as life changing.

e.g. my dog is now deaf but most people don't notice except for the fact nothing wakes her up. If she had gone blind, she would probably have been put down because she wouldn't be able to adjust and her quality of life would be near non-existant.
