1) As someone who always thought Krystal would make the most sense as the next SF rep, I was surprised just how much support fell off for her after Brawl. Now that she's an AT the lack of support is more understandable, but pre-Smash 4 it seemed about half her supports moved on.
When Wolf didn't come back, people put more priority on the veteran, so the support got way more split.

Especially after learning Krystal didn't get in over Wolf simply cause he could be remade for Fox. So that also doesn't help people's perceptions, seeing as she was lower priority.

I got another one, the Octane car from Rocket League.

I remember making a support thread and it's sitting there dead and abandoned with only 2 supporters.

If we're including Bandana Dee, than I'd add Rex and Isaac but otherwise yeah.
Dude, glad to see your active again. *Bro fist* I thought you disconnected from Smashboards all together.

On to the topic, .. Rex? Rex HAS broken the first barrier, I think he still needs more time before he can be considered an all star of Nintendo. 5 years at least.

1) 3) Cranky Kong would be an awesome DK choice imo but people seem laser focused on Dixie.
Cranky Kong is absolutely dusted to the side, I think Cranky Kong would be a far interesting addition. Cranky Kong and Dixie are the last DK reps to me.

Tiny Kong, Lanky Kong and Chunky Kong would be cool. (Have them where you switch like Pokemon Trainer.)

What do you define as the first barrier?

Rex became seriously popular, being from a new title at the time that really made him a giant in the speculation scene. That counts as the first barrier to me.

Now he needs to stand the test of time in the speculation scene, at least like Dixie Kong.

Ah so your barriers are...

  1. Prove to be popular
  2. Prove to last
?

Uhh.. yeah. My brain is flawed.. Not every character will stay popular, y'know. It takes a stronger following.
No I hear ya.

Long lasting popularity is important.

That said, its important to note that even if a character isn't requested anymore, they can still be popular.

Characters like Ridley had a fall in requests after Smash 4's deconfirmation, but he was still popular.

I always figured the fall-off in Krystal support was directly related to the fall-off in new Star Fox titles. Between Melee and Brawl, Krystal was in at least 3 titles I can think of (Dinosaur Planet, Assault and Command).

After Command the only Star Fox games have been focused around the lore of the first game: Remake of Star Fox 64, Zero, and grippy's grope quest (I forget the actual name of this one... guard?)

If anything, the biggest star fox has gotten in terms of "new" was Star Fox 2 getting released on SNES mini. And that game has nothing to do with Krystal.

I think the post 64 characters (and Star Fox in general) will start being more popular once they get a new title that sticks.

I do kind of like the idea of Peppy and Krystal both being active members of the team...

2) Most people want either Waddle Dee or Marx but there's barely any support for Susie from Planet Robobot. I suppose people just don't want to get invested in a newer Kirby character if there's a past pattern of modern Kirby not getting a huge focus.
Well... Kirby is a complex (dark) matter. There are a lot of nice candidates but realistically we're lucky if we get one or two newcomers at best (so far we got none in 2 games). Any Dream Friend from Star Allies would be a great newcomer, and some additional characters (not Dream Friends) as well, such as Hyness, Dark Matter and... even Chef Kawasaki.

Anyway, I think Adeleine has a support base too, and occasionally people requesting Dark Matter, Gooey or Three Mage Sisters also show up. (Adeleine is my most wanted BTW if it wasn't clear enough already).

I'm surprised Rick Kine and Coo don't get any support though... they have been main characters for many years, still people don't seem to give them enough credits. Though I can see why they would be hard to implement in Smash... maybe as assist trophies they would work better.

3, you can add me (unless I'm already one of those two). I like the concept of a car being a fighter, and I also support a car from Re-Volt as a fighter, even if it will never happen.

I'm really surprised there's no support thread at all for the Eggplant Wizard.

I figured somebody would have made one, even if it didn't get many replies, but I'm not seeing one anywhere.

Most of my most wanted characters are barely ever talked about. I don’t see much discussion on the Battletoads, Bill Rizer, Sarah Kerrigan, Magus, Velvet Crowe, Lu Bu, Cofagrigus, among many others. I don’t really expect any of them but I’d love to be surprised.

Aside from Lara Croft and the Chosen Undead, who I brought up in RTC, I've grown surprised that Adol doesn't have much support, seeing as Ys is an incredibly old and influential JRPG. You'd think he'd be getting more attention based on that. Estelle seems to get all the support from Falcom fans, though to be fair, she's purportedly a very likeable and popular character, so I suppose that's not too much of a surprise.

For a game with more than 15 million players, average players reach the thousands (both just on PC, and devs state there were more players on console), with tons of licenses (Silent Hill, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.) I'm shocked by how low support for a DbD character it has. Sure, the Dwight Support thread was just bad (no offense) and I'd wish I could've done it, but there wasn't even a single comment on it when I looked last time. How is there this little support to the game that basically popularized the asymmetrical horror genre? Could be either Dwight Fairfield, The Trapper, or any of the survivor or killers from that game, there's like no support whatsoever.

Edit: also checked this thread with Ctrl+F and searched "Dwight Fairfield" "DBD" "Dead by Daylight", unless it was hidden in a spoiler, nobody even mentioned them in this thread.

About Space Invaders, I copy his contextual references here.
You're welcome to support this challenger on his thread: link.

Nintendo History
• Nintendo decided to go into the video game business when Space Invader appeared.*
• Hiroshi Yamauchi created the Famicom after making Space Invaders the subject of study among his employees, which caused them to become obsessed.*
• Shigeru Miyamoto stated that he wasn't interested in video games until he discovers Space Invaders. He considers this game to have revolutionized the video game industry.*
• Satoru Iwata's interest in making video games grew in 1978, when the Space Invaders boom took hold.*
• Koji Kondo was inspired by Space Invaders and Donkey Kong arcade series to become a video game composer.*

Sakurai focus
• Masahiro Sakurai mentioned Space Invaders when he commented on the TV-Game 15 assist trophee in Smash Bros.*
• Masahiro Sakurai using Space Invaders in his talk on GDC Risk and Return from 500th column Famitsu livestream.*, °
• Masahiro Sakurai showcased some of his creations in Dragon Quest Builders 2. He "starts" on a Space Invaders sprite and ends by showing off the Super Smash Bros logo; would this be a parallel to his own journey in gaming? The invader boom occured in Japan when Sakurai was 8 years old.*

Nintendo Proximity
• Sheriff is a game influenced by Space Invaders; it appears in the Smash Bros series since Melee (except Brawl).*
• Galaxian is a game influenced by Space Invaders; Boss Galaga and 4 Galaxian sprites appear in the Smash Bros series since Sm4sh.*
• Taito appears in the Sm4sh and Ultimate credits. Taito's in-house sound department Zuntata has made six music remixes: Kapp'n's Song, The Mysterious Murasame Castle Medley, Wii Shop Channel (Remix), Staff Credits - Kirby's Dream Land, We Are Robots (Dr.Wily Stage 2) and Splattack! (Remix). Orville, the protagonist of Takt of Magic, appears as a spirit.*
• Space Invaders is one of the few series to appear on Virtual Boy, with the Bomberman and Shin Megami Tensei series.*
• Space Fever is a Space Invaders clone created by Nintendo, then Space Fever II is a minigame in the Game Boy Camera.*
• Space Invaders Get Even is the only game in which Space Invaders are playable and is a Wii Exclusive.*

Others important facts
• Space Invaders series sales grossed over $14 billion, making it the 7th highest grossing series of all time, behind Mario, Pokémon, Call of Duty, Dungeon Fighter Online, Wii Series and Pac-Man.*, °
• Space Invaders is inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, with Mario, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon Red & Green, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, Street Fighter II, Final Fantasy VII and Minecraft.*
• Space Invaders is part of the Totaku figurine collection which parallel to Amiibo, with Sonic, Ryu, Banjo-Kazooie, Mega Man and Pac-Man.*

Tbh, I think it's kinda a bummer that all the Kirby fans defaulted to Bandana Dee, there are a lot of cool Kirby characters and at this point I feel like a chunk of the Dee supporters are only behind him because they want a new Kirby character and not because he's the one they want the most.

Not sure if I already mentioned this but Lara Croft.

For being big in the 90s and THE female video game protagonist, you'd expect she'd have more fan demand and requests. The fact a side character who only last and only appeared in a 20+ video game and someone from what's basically just crossover fanfiction between Disney movies and Final Fantasy has more fan demand surprises me.

I guess it could be in many people's eyes she doesn't bring anything new or interesting given she lacks powers because I guess powers means everything to fans.

Same as Nathan Drake, people think they would be so boring because gun go brrr and shooty weapons.

Are those two characters you mentioned being Geno and Sora?

I'm pretty baffled that Heavy is the popular Valve pick and not Chell, I never see any support for Portal in Smash.

No one discusses a Saints Row rep, which would work better in Smash than any GTA rep. Johnny Gat, the notable face of the franchise is somewhat iconic, already being from a franchise with multiple instalments and could have an interesting perspective gameplay that stems from the series whacky-ness. Johnny Gat is basically like a human version of Crash and moveset could be easily A pulled and would be still unique. Steelport also has amazing stage location, Saints HQ being the most obvious.

If not Johnny Gat, I would love to see Nick Kang (True Crime Streets of La, who's still more workable than a GTA rep.

I always see support for Meowth and Mimikyu (which is cool, don‘t get me wrong), but I haven’t seen too much love for Scizor. I thinking about how all three of these Pokémon could debut in 64 (Meowth), Melee (Scizor) and Ultimate (Mimikyu), respectively, if :jigglypuff64::pichumelee::ultincineroar: weren’t in the games as fighters.

At least that expectation is particularly reasonable for Velvet, seeing as it's looking like we're light on Bamco newcomers once again. I'd want to be proven wrong, but fate isn't that kind...

People usually are fixated on the "guns" issue when she's brought up (even though it clearly isn't a goddamned issue anymore :ultjoker:). If either of the above characters get in somehow, at least she might get more fan attention afterwards.

LARA CROFT

Style: ACTION SURVIVAL

Standard Special: Dual Pistols. Lara holds B and rapidly fires her pistols. Once she hits a target, it locks on. When locked onto a target, she cannot Shield or Dodge without releasing B. However, if she does use the Shield button, this gives her the ability to lock onto a second target if they are near the first target, and each of the two targets gets hit at half speed (as they each only have one pistol locked on). Lara has full mobility while shooting.

Side Special: Bow and Arrow. Lara can press the combination multiple times to switch arrow types, indicated by a meter on the bottom. The options are
  • Standard Arrow (slightly faster than others)
  • Fire Arrow (slightly more damage)
  • Poison Arrow (Damage that lngers)
  • Explosive Arrow (Slightly More Radius of Damage
  • Piercing Arrow (can go through opponent and hit multiple)
Up Special: Skilled Climber. Lara throws out a grappling hook. It is longer than the average tether grab, and Is able to be aimed. If it lands, Lara climbs up the rope, and then can continue to climb up the stage by another half of the rope’s length, regardless of the angle. The hook will also cause average damage if it lands on an opponent, and will push them out of the way to securely attach to a ledge if Lara is in the air.

Down Special: Endure. Lara is known to survive, and this move helps her in multiple ways. For several frames once pressed, Lara will enter an invincible mode. This will mean she can survive a couple of hits without taking damage or knockback, break a counter used on her, move through rapid fire attacks. It is also used passively to help her survive for slighter longer when swimming, and passively keeps her from taking damage or effect from stage hazards.

In stark contrast to other characters, and to emphasize that Lara is a human thrown into other worldy adventures- her Smash attacks, not her specials, will use animations of the items in her more magical explorations- though they will not be as versatile as her specials.

A 2nd Wario rep other than Ashley, feel like Shake King doesn't get that much love. Doesn't help that the Wario Land series is pretty much dead after it died way way back in 2008.

I made a support thread for Shake King months ago and it's just there sitting dead with only 2 supporters.

And he's a one-off character who's pretty niche. (The whole "LITERALLY WHO!?!?" thing fans said when Terry got in.)
