Character Rankings List - Post-March 2010

I think he's using all the ones sponsered here on Smashboards as legitamate tournies. No there are no scrub "High school" Tournies like the one I had a couple weeks ago. These are all relatively legit tourney outings between good players.

Any in-person tournament can be used I think. As long as they have the top 8 characters or so. Most of the good characters come out on top of "scrub" tournys anyway, unless there are some players who are just plain good with their character like Yoshi or Captain Falcon. I plan on going to my end-of-year high school tourney, and submitting the results.

Anyone could just come in here with random top 8s and say it was at their HS tourney with the poster being number 1 - lol.

That list doesn't prove much, because quantity is taken more into account than quality.
Example: 10 Kirbys plays 10 tournaments, and win all then, Kirby won't be S Rank, because Snake and MK have more quantity

I've made quantity factor in as little as I can without outright removing it from the equation. Placing top-eight only gives you 0.5 points. That means you need six people placing top eight just to equal one person getting top four! And if Kirby's start winning a lot of tournaments, you can bet that the number of Kirby players will tend to rise. Snake and Meta Knight do indeed have quite a large number of players, but bear in mind that they also have quite a few wins to their name as well. In fact, Snake has 18 wins. You really can't dispute that.

Doubles don't factor in at all because it works completely differently from singles and I don't want to bother dealing with every single possible doubles combination.

From what I've seen, I think he considers all tourneys. Plus its good to have some variety in the tournament skill levels. It will give the list an overall record of top wins, and plus this will probably be the only HS tourney on the list.

No, I'll be the one organizing the tourney, and I'll make sure I know who used who. I'm not like that, I'll give the accurate results. I'm pretty sure I'll win, but never know, and plus it will be interesting to see who comes out on top after me, because most of the people that play smash at my school use different chars.

Doesn't seem like a legit tournament, is what I'm implying. The fact that all the tournaments used have a thread in either the Tournament Listings or in their Regional Zone would lead me to believe that a HS tournament isn't contributing to the numbers.

But maybe he does go by every single tournament. *shrug*

No, I'll just post them in the results thread implying that it was a HS tournament. The tournament rules will be pretty standard, no item, 8 time limit, 3 stock, neutrals and counterpicks, double elimination.

Data usually happens on Sundays, because tournaments tend to begin on Saturdays and results get reported either late in the night or the next day.

I hear many people saying that popularity skews the results and suggesting ways to weigh the rankings based on popularity.
It's far more helpful to have an unweighted list, though. The list doesn't pretend to be state if certain characters are strictly better than others, or not. Instead, it merely tries to paint a picture of the current Brawl metagame.
Looking at this list, I can see which kind of characters to watch out for. In this case, it is Snake, MK, and friends. I know that I should be preparing myself for matchups against chars in the S, A, and maybe B ranks.
If ten snakes and one pikachu have a tourney and the one pikachu wins, I still would rather about snake rather than pikachu. So, the list is very helpful and should not factor in popularity.
I play Snake/Ganondorf, and I'm hoping to have a viable Ganondorf. To test out if out his viability in tournament, I'll be playing Ganondorf vs S/A rank matchups.

Wow, I'm surprised at both Sonic and Donkey Kong. I didn't think Sonic could get so many tournament wins, and I didn't think people would like DK enough to play him well.

Snake and MK are 6.29 and 5.7, respectively. A Rank is 1.0-3.0, B is 0-1, C is 0-0.5 the other way, D is 0.5-0.95, E is 0.95-whatever.

Hey Smashbros_7, I'm pretty sure I can form a very rational argument compared to you, so don't even bother questioning my sanity. I have nothing against Ness, but from the way you talk it seems you're even more ridiculously dedicated than Simna.

I made a single post that Ness was bottom, at which point he was; recent events have brought him to the lower end of D Rank... Among other things, N.WA winning a tournament with Ness and other characters.

So, please stop being a moron and an asshat and bring something constructive to the threads you post in.

Ya, a Ness recently won a tournament or two I entered, strangely enough. Even with this hitstun issue, Ness still is a fighter, eh=??? I think Ness could definitely still go up, despite these big set backs.

And I'd love to see how this thing compares month by month (week by week=???), though I doubt anyone will do even a month by month comparission.

Good and intresting thread. This is a lot of intresting stuff, and it will be really intruging to see how this all develops. I find it wierd Diddy Kong is raked so low when he seems destined to become a high or top tier character. Same thing to a lesser extent with Toon Link. It seemed everyone was going to main him (I was set to main him from Brawl's announcement, lol!). And I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if almost all (if not all) of Bowser's "points" come from Gimpyfish, lol!

In time, I think there's little way DK can stay in the top 10, and little way Toon Link can stay off it. And I'm still confused as crap about Diddy Kong not even being in the top 20. Seriously-what's with that=???
