If anybody really should be quitting Brawl, it should be me. Whenever I see someone better than me quitting it makes me ask myself "Why am I still here?"

Its just like an entering thing and hosting thing that ima stop. If i ever have time i wouldnt mind hangin with some of yall but that kind of time will soon dissipate

he was staying grounded until he got me above him then he juggled the hell out of me and generally not doing things I could punish with ROB
there are no counters to this because ROB is bad
That's a terrible mentality and it's why a lot of people quit low tiers. He had to hit/outplay you to get you above him, so how did he do this? Do you really think you executed well enough when getting juggled to avoid full punishment or could you have done better?

Grounded MK can't beat out ROB unless you aren't outzoning him on the ground lol
(main reason when I play your rob with mk I'm never on the ground)

I played like 3 friendlies with Uncle trying to get into my rhythm but just thinking about what I want to do isn't enough when I'm messing up things I never mess up
What sorts of things did you mess up and why would you be messing them up when I know you prepare extensively for tournaments?

If anybody really should be quitting Brawl, it should be me. Whenever I see someone better than me quitting it makes me ask myself "Why am I still here?"
People enter/stay in/leave the community for all sorts of different reasons. Just because someone is better than you and decides this isn't for them anymore doesn't mean it should affect your own decisions concerning this game because you have to respect their wishes as people, but also because you just have to respect life/personal stuff calling sometimes.

The thing about quitting smash is you cant post that your going to quit

you just have to disappear
I feel like this is true. I know whenever I choose to quit I'm just going to Stop going to things and posting.

PP, I lost to Kadaj and H1N1. I have never beaten Kadaj in a set. His MK gimps me a lot. Me and H1N1 go back and forth, like whoever wins first game will pretty much get the set.

He went Snake and I went Snake first 2 games, he won the first I won the second. For the third game he switched to Falco, since it was his counter pick he got to choose his character after I did. Otherwise I would have switched to ROB against his Falco.

Kevin, I wasn't trying to say or imply that I was going to quit. ;)

It's just something I ask myself whenever this kind of thing happens, and I always have a answer for it.

1. I have always liked this game, and still do.
2. I have always liked the NC Smash (This includes Melee, they have cool people too.) community, and still do.
3. I still have time for this game, even though I'll have less of it once I graduate next fall. I can see where Steve is coming from. Sometimes, RL is calling, and you gotta answer. I'm lucky for having the time that I have.

Overall, I will keep on competing until I no longer have the time for it. My low placements haven't stopped me, and they never will.

I messed them up because I wasn't warmed up lol
How long does it usually take you to warm up? Do you think there are ways to "prime" yourself to warm up faster or are there specific things you can do to get your precision to where it needs to be quickly?

@Uncle: mad respect =)

Well I don't know the matchup with Snake but I sort of do with ROB. But that's the thing, his has characters that can beat my ROB but I can beat them with Snake, but he has characters that can beat my Snake that my ROB can beat, it's like a circle. Squirtle, Bulbasour, Charmander.

What I need to do is just learn my matchups with both characters lol. It's all good though I like to think that I'm improving, you need to come to more things Keith. We are going to hang out and practice dude.

I'd say about 15-20 mins of actually playing.

I can't think of any besides actually playing
Hmmm this can't be spread out I suppose....but I still can't believe you couldn't get even that much time in. Clearly more setups were needed and this will be good motivation for those of you with a way to get more setups to do just that.

Now then, a lot of these answers about why people lost have been too vague I feel. How are you all pushing your characters' advantages and minimizing their disadvantages? What do you do to give yourself time to read your opponent? Are you working on maximizing your punishments? In a game where big punishments are rare, you will be in the neutral position much more often. Are you all prepared for extended mixup games and deep layers of psychological conditioning that apply in every matchup? Do you abuse invincibility as best as you can? What about stage control? Do you understand the purpose of a projectile or disjointed hitboxes and how to maximize its effectiveness?

These questions and more are things you guys need to be considering if you want to be successful in Brawl. Since there are no big movement techniques like in Melee it is crucial that you all know how to exploit your characters' base abilities(ranged attacks, projectiles, mobility, etc) to the absolute fullest. How do good MKs lose? Well, part of it is because MK isn't that mobile in the air(he can go up but not side to side much without glide and that certainly isn't too viable in non-recovery positions), among other things. Look for weaknesses in other characters to exploit as well if you want to win. Always be searching for new exploitations or how pros do it themselves in videos, but just try to understand WHY pros do it so you can do such things but in your own way.

I could type more but I'll stop here and see what you guys think.

I think we should have more smashfests as a way to practice and understand characters and matchups.

We should play more as well (as way to study each other and give critiques)

for example,

what could the mario have done better?

edit:ron i would come for mvc 3, but i would really like it if brawl were there

what could the mario have done better?
In general, Mario should be:
  1. Staying out of range of Snake's moves (especially ftilt and utilt)
  2. Getting in range for his own moves to land
  3. Performing combos at low percents to build damage
  4. Killing with gimps (especially using the cape) and smash attacks
  5. Catching and rethrowing grenades, and caping them (Snake can nade strip which makes this harder)
  6. Remembering and avoiding C4s and landmines

Detailed analysis:

0:13 - What happened: Mario spawns and immediately runs forward off the platform to the center of the stage. What he should have done: Mario is better off playing a little more campy to start with. He should be shooting fireballs, and either staying on the right platform, jumping to the top platform, or running backwards off the platform to the stage.

0:14 - What happened: Mario jumps and performs a uair, landing on the left platform where Snake spawned. However, by now Snake has dropped through the platform and pulled 2 grenades. What he should have done: This is an example of attacking where the opponent was, not where they will be. Snake could utilt, uair, or just shield and wait for the nades to explode. Mario could have dash grabbed Snake under the platform, short hop uaired under the platform, or stood and waited, because Snakes own nades put pressure on himself.

0:15 - What happened: Mario realizes his error and runs off the platform, using a bair to put pressure underneath the platform where Snake was. However, by now Snake has rolled to the center of the stage and Mario has accidentally landed right on top of him. Snake sees Mario coming towards him and shields out of his roll, powershielding Mario's bair pretty much by accident. What he should have done: Standing on a platform above Snake is dangerous. Usually the safest options are to full hop or double jump away (perhaps up to the top platform). Running off the edge the way he did is alright, but Snake could have punished him by waiting for the bair and ftilting or by picking up and throwing one of the nades.

0:16 - What happened: Mario's bair wasn't autocanceled, but it doesn't have much cooldown anyway. Mario knows that after powershielding, a lot of players will drop shield and try to attack or shield grab, so Mario uses his fast jab to punish that option. He uses all 3 parts of his jab combo, all of which connect and the knockback sends Snake out of Mario's range, and to the very edge of Snake's ftilt range. What he should have done: Mario could have grabbed, or done one or two jabs and then a different move (such as grab or ftilt) to do more damage. However, doing the full jab wasn't a bad option.

0:17 - What happened: Mario short hop fireballs while advancing. He lands behind where Snake was and tries to jab interrupt (probably buffered) in case anything happens. Meanwhile, Snake does both parts of ftilt and gets hit with the fireball during the second part. After getting hit and Mario jumping behind him, he shields. What he should have done: Standing just outside of Snake's ftilt range is a very delicate position for most characters. Many Snake players will ftilt, relying on its speed to avoid punishment for whiffing. Better Snakes might walk forward slightly and then ftilt, which is almost as fast and would put a lot of pressure on Mario. Short hop fireball is not a bad option, but Mario probably should have moved back slightly while doing it, instead of moving far forward. Another option would be to walk forward and shield, waiting for the ftilts with the intent to shield grab, or walk back. Snake also could have used his DACUS, which makes being on the ground anywhere in front of him risky. Short hop dair, short hop uair, and empty short hop are other potential options.

This is just the first 5 seconds of the match. The rest is left as an exercise to the player :)

So yeah. I've kinda been a bit of a stranger in the NC Brawl scene. I miss you guys. I just got back from a trip to Florida and got to play against the Florida smashers. Unfortunately I won't be able to go to many Brawl tournaments in the near future (I had to sell my soul at work to get a week off -_-). But I'm looking forward to (eventually) going to some tournaments. Just figured I'd post for those who care.

tiger as well please.
Ok first round I had....
  • Killanator (Yoshi and Wario) - 2-0
  • Vice (D3 and Mk) - 2-1
  • M2k (Mk) - 0-2
  • ..... fought someone here.... forgot who >.<' ... I 2-0 though *if anyone knows, please tell me ^^')
  • Archer (Tl) - 2-1
  • Stingers (Rob and solo Charizard <-- lmao) - 1-2

M2k- um.... ****.... :awesome: - He basically shuttle Looped my *** and gave me no room to breathe. I couldn't get away >.<'

Stingers- Our last match was close but he got me last stock. He played very campy and safe. He made it hard to approach with Marth and made sure to keep his distance. He knew the Mu well by the way I see it 'looks at Craig'

Do you want to explain your losses, Craig(and anyone else from NC in the top 8 I suppose)? Merely for information/discussion purposes.

If you don't wanna talk about it, then it's cool.

i lost to micaelis 1-2 and seagull 0-2

i was about to 3 stock micaelis twice but the momentum of the match instantly changed each time. i should have camped as soon as i had the lead. This match was just upsetting for me.
all ics vs mk

seagull won the first match when we were both at 140% last stock. 2nd match i got aggresive and lost on last stock while he had low percent.
all falco vs mk
