yer so it turns out a good few of us play chess from time to time, so I was thinking of setting up a sort of long term chess league for aus smashers.

Just some sort of seasonal points thing, I'll have a look for a format for an actual ladder/season to keep proper scoring, but just looking for expressions of interest right now.

You're looking at playing like one game a week/fortnight online/however whenever you and your opponent can make the time.

Whose keen?

that would be my keen, thanks for finding it.

this would be online, right?

i think a monthy chess tourney at a melbourne major would be hella fun and a nice break from videogames =D

I won a championship when I was 12. I haven't played since then.

SO THE QUESTION REMAINS

can a 12 year old chess champion beat a bunch of grown men

I was ranked 4th in QLD in the under 12's <3

My school also won national few years ago lol
My rating from.......4 years ago was 1300+ ish I havent played for ages though.

Also @Rad
Yes, this kid I know, who was....2 or 3 years younger than me, I think hes one of Australia's very 1st youngest person to become a GM. The last time I saw him, I think hes rating was 2200+, he got on the world record book iirc
He should be like 16 ish now, I think.

I would be interested, but having the time to sit down and play chess would be near impossible for me. I still want to play you Toki! LD4?

20min is fine, maybe a bit short. 40min is a comfortable match time limit.

pawn... thats those little nobbly ones at the front right?

chess is allright, but shogi is waaaaaay better.

"Checkmate

That is an illegal move, Queen's don't move like that.

Sorry I was thinking of poker."

Shogi is better.

If any of you guys are half as good as you are stating you will need more than 20 minutes to play.

20min is plenty of time if you're good, and your opponent is terrible. Lightning matches are actually better practice because you make quick decisions based on experience in situations, and you learn much faster why and why not to do certain moves in situations you wouldn't normally get into.

I have heard Jesmo is pretty good at chess too.

Chess is fun!

Yeah. I cbf sitting down to play chess for so long. Leave that to a serious game. Extend time limit for finals maybe.
I thought this was just for expression of interest xD

The popularity of this thread really surprised me.

Smashers don't seem like chess players. Chess players are supposed to be all nerdy and shy.

Oh wait :troll:

I used to play chess, like every other little European kid. I was alright I suppose, nothing fantastic, but good enough.

Dunno if I could bothered playing again; it takes so much time.

Blacks Knights are imba, too much map control

And Blacks Tier 3 is ridiculous

Severe end game disadvantage to White
Which is why White needs to rush and harass for a quick gg
Should play as White Attila
