Smash Lord
If Brawl+ isn't considered a real game because it's a mod of another game then I guess these games aren't "real" either and are not played in tournament and/or taken seriously by many people.
Counter Strike (Half-Life mod)
DOTA (WC3 Mod)
Original Team Fortress (Quake mod)
Given, these aren't fighters but the same principals apply here.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter WHO made the game as long as it is technically sound as is indeed competitively balanced which, Brawl+ already is (for the most part). Of course there are a few issues but when you actually sit down and play the game for a few matches it should be enjoyable to you if you agree with the idea of hitstun and combos. I was in the same boat as Cort a while back before I tried it, until I actually did try it one day at a smashfest and loved it ever since. There's still some frustration to be had with overbuffs and the like but these things are temporary since the game is still technically in "testing" phase. I'm just hoping the game can get finalized soon and from there on - tiny tweaks that don't radically change gameplay but rather restrict broken crap like most fighters do with their patches and updates.
