This is the worst way you can set something like this up, through a stream and not somewhere from the game itself.

“Oh no, that isn’t the true God, this is the true God!” ... Until they introduce a next deity of some kind. Feels like the lore’s getting redundant at this point. The fact they had the mysterious voice that yells “Nooo!” after beating Khan Makyr changed to Dark Lord and then changed back to mysterious voice already broke some of the immersion for me, and now this power creep.

If the next game’s just more of the same I feel it’ll start to get stale fast. They need to keep it fresh somehow. This all just feels like quick damage control after the community’s mixed response to TAG part 2’s ending.


Hm... After looking at the vague answers given on stream, seems like some people are just looking too much into things while coping with their disappointment from TAG part 2. Sounds like the Dark Lord is still intended to be Lucifer which makes sense, even if there’s a being beyond him which of course there is. How would there be another game otherwise? Still, am content with this being the last one for awhile.

Got to say, my interest in the lore starting going down ever since they revealed the devil was a evil Doomguy at the end of AG Part 1. I mean I was willing to given them a chance to convince me it wasn't dumb, but instead they weirdly just don't talk about how these two guys have the same face. Now your telling me that there is another god above the one VEGA called "the first being" >_>

The pet rabbit, who had some hidden cameo appearances throughout Eternal, but Hugo or someone confirmed it was a hallucination in Doomguy’s head because he misses her.

That's... kinda sad, actually.
That, and he confirmed that the photo of the woman and boy in the Fortress of Doom was Doomguy's wife and son, who were also killed alongside Daisy at the end of Doom 1.

Which kinda invalidates the whole "Doomguy doesn't know what human reproduction is" meme... unless his son was either adopted or conceived via IVF
.

Stop trying to write a plot, Id, it's DOOM, just give us more demons to kill.

I don't know if anybody here is interested, but the Microsoft-Zenimax buyout just got the EU Seal of Approval.


I have no idea what that quote means, but I assume it's a good thing.
Most relevant to us, Microsoft already Okay'd Steve for Smash.

And having Doomguy in Smash is, IMO, a must for the game to truly be what it seems to be aspiring to be with the inclusion of the likes of Ryu, Simon Belmont, and Cloud, an all-stars fighting game hosting representatives from the most influential games in the industry's history.

DOOM is more than a genre-definer. It is the very game upon whose shoulders much of the modern industry stands upon.

It pioneered the combination of a singleplayer campaign with an additional LAN multiplayer mode, Id's licensing of the Doom Engine is what inspired things like the Unreal engine of today, it's the first "realistic" videogame released to push the limits of graphics in an era of games set in unrealistic, vague square rooms and silly enemies. It was a game that proved the PC's capabilities to challenge, and even surpass consoles as a platform in terms of graphical fidelity in an era where the GPU wasn't even a pipedream yet.

And most of all, Doom's popularity was such that it outperformed Microsoft Windows in 1995, leading to Bill Gates approaching Id for the right to make a Windows port of Doom (Which, was, in it's original incarnation, a MS-DOS Game.) Among the people who worked on that game was Gabe Newell, who would come to found Valve.

It bears keeping in mind, in those early days, Microsoft was the underdog with it's outdated MS-DOS system and "knockoff" Windows, compared to Apple's MacOS. Doom's superiority over MacOS rival, was part of that rising tide that overthrew Steve Jobs and established the more developer-friendly Windows as the dominant PC OS.

Doom is one of those few games that didn't just shake the video game industry, but reached beyond that to influence mainstream culture as a whole in a time when Video Games were seeing as that weird thing nerds in universities did. It was so successful, Bill Gates took notice, and in doing so, would play it's own part in shaping PC history as a whole. There are few who could stand up to the likes of a certain mustachioed plumber as an equal, and this one nameless marine, is one of those few.

But don't take it from me. Take it from Michael Abrash, current chief scientist of Occulus VR, a member of the Quake Dev Team, and then writer of a column in Dr. Dobbs called Rambling in Real Time.
This must have been what it was like for Jon Landau when he attended a concert at the Harvard Square Theater in 1974 and afterwards wrote, "I saw rock'n'roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen."


Surely this is the way the people at Apple felt when they visited Xerox PARC, used a strange device called a "mouse" to move bitmapped windows around the screen, and suddenly glimpsed a future very different from the one they had envisioned just hours before.


We're talking the apes dancing around the monolith in 2001; an asteroid hitting the Earth and clearing the way for us mammals; a bunch of amino acids coming together in just the right way to create the first dim hint of life. What we're talking here is The Day The World Changed, if you catch my drift.


Let me explain.


At the Game Developers Conference in April 1994, there were rumors flying around about DOOM running under Windows. Given that DOOM was and is a DOS phenomenon sui generis, and that Windows had zero mindshare for real-time games, the rumors seemed improbable, to say the least, but they were confirmed when Microsoft urged people to stop by Chris Hecker's talk to see WinDOOM. So the room was packed with people expecting to see DOOM running under Windows--and still the crowd literally gasped when it actually happened. There was DOOM, running along in what was indisputably real time--in a window, with Program Manager, and Clock, and all the rest up there too. And in that moment I had one of those rare glimpses of the future--a future in which Windows becomes the mainstream, real-time graphics platform. That future is one in which all the rules of real-time graphics programming change, a future in which Mode X and SuperVGA and DOS extenders and adapter support and the other myriad complexities of DOS programming vanish.


You see, Windows is a DOS extender, it provides driver support in a generally device-independent way, and it attracts far more drivers than any other platform. The only thing missing for real-time graphics is fast, direct, double-buffered graphics-- or, rather, I should say "was," because that gap is now filled by WinG (pronounced win-GEE), the software that made WinDOOM possible. WinG does nothing more or less profound than support fast, double-buffered drawing on Win 3.1, Win32s, and Win32, and that's precisely the missing ingredient in making Windows an excellent real-time animation platform.


I know what you're thinking: Is that all? Is that what you're getting so excited about? Well, yes. Think of it this way. Right now, if you want to do real-time, 256-color graphics above 320x200 under DOS, you have to deal with the complexities of Mode X. If you want to go past 360x480, you have to deal with supporting dozens of different SuperVGAs, and you have to handle banked video memory. You also have to do all the drawing yourself, including text. Furthermore, you have to deal with protected mode somehow, plus input handling, and all the rest.


With WinG, the details of protected mode, devices, and input handling are handled by Windows, and 32-bit programming is a snap with Windows NT or Win32s or, soon, Windows 95, with tools galore available. Better yet, you can do all your drawing into a single, linear pixel buffer, with GDI's help, if you'd like, and then WinG will copy or stretch that buffer to the screen at memory bandwidth. No banking, no Mode X, no mode-set complexities, just the big, linear pixel buffer with 32-bit addressing that you've always dreamed of--and Windows is everywhere nowadays, so we're talking about a huge and rapidly growing installed base.


So sure, I think WinG is worth getting excited about, if for no other reason than because it means that game authors are well on their way to having a single, standard, hardware-independent PC environment in which to program. I have a more selfish reason for liking WinG, though; it allows me to have all of the code in this column draw to linear pixel buffers, freeing me to concentrate on challenging, high-level, real-time graphics issues rather than hardware- and OS-specific details. What I'm going to do this month is provide a quick overview of WinG, then present a simple, WinG-based animation program that will serve as the foundation for our future ramblings in real time. Once we've got that basic program in place, we can put just about any kind of graphics on top of it, without spending any more precious column space on low-level details. And believe me, column space is indeed precious--I can already think of more hardware-independent graphics topics than I could cover in a decade's worth of columns!

They explained it in Part 1. The Dark Lord takes the form of what the Demons fear most.

Huh, I’m pretty sure it’s in there somewhere. It’s under some kind of mumbo jumbo about split worlds and recreating the human world as a Mirror of the hell world where it’s implied or stated the only one that could lead/rule them was the one they feared most. Which was what The Father meant when he said “you in their world.” I THINK. I could be wrong but I think that’s what the explanation was.

If the Dark Lord we faught is not even the main villain anymore, i wonder about some of the concept art for Hell priests and Archdemons, if they still exist somewhere.
It seems like an out of nowhere retcon and i already thought the Dark Lord didn't work as an "anti-doomguy" for not having a similar weaponset and the fact Doomguy's appearence in 3D could have been done more faithfully.
At this point, i wish id just admitted that lore might as well be an experiment for the sake of it at best and at worst, something added because other franchises have it, when the whole thing is written with a different identity from the original games.
I also wonder if story even has to be an excuse to keep making more Doom games, if they no longer have to worry about season pass to work more on gameplay.
I also always thought that expanding Doom meant literally adding anything, because a more structured story/lore could limit things for a series that is fun to experiment with, even if it's because of the simplicity or weirdness of the premise.
I even think a good reason for "some occasional reboots or reiterations, even if spin-offs" is to play with ideas that could have been design/written differently.

Don't care much about Doomguy having a wife and son because the only thing it's contradicting is a meme screenshot that was never properly sourced or looked up.
It was never a retcon like how they described UAC developing cybernetic demons, which actually differs both some enemy descriptions in the original levels and the overall layouts and aesthetic of classic levels.
That was also one of the very few bits of classic Doom.

Not sure if this was posted here but I figured it'd be good to showcase this really good idea for a Classic Mode for Doomguy by Megadoomer. I really like it.

Doomguy: Rip and Tear (characters who are demonic, either in appearance or abilities)

Stage 1: :ultdarkpit: on Find Mii (At Doom's Gate)

I guess this clears up some things about the lore, not that I took it too seriously like that to begin with, but it was serviceable enough for the world building.

Yeah, I'm kinda checking out on the lore stuff now. The non answers to the Davoth looking like Doomguy thing is still frustrating to me.

I guess I'm glad there will be some explanation to that time gap between 2016 and Eternal. (which I actually forgot about) But I've given up on getting answers to stuff that bug me, like learning who the heck was the wretch.

Reading up on some of the lore after finally finishing Part II a couple weeks ago (sorry I got a hell of a backlog) this is how I feel the explanation of the Doom Slayer and Davoth looking the same goes.

Davoth is the creator of everything. It’s confirmed that he wasn’t the Dark Lord to begin with but was instead the creator of all things. He created the Maykr’s and thus Khan Maykr, the Father, and Samur who went on to overthrow him. In response he developed his sadistic ways and was imprisoned in Hell to serve there until he was reduced to a life sphere by some means I’m unaware of. The Khan Maykr’s rise to power is a little more murky but it seems like she overthrew the Father just as the Father did to Davoth. This could be in the lore and I just missed it but it’s likely Davoth was the one who assisted Khan in overthrowing The Father and reducing him to a life sphere.

This is the part I’m most sure on though. Before Davoth was betrayed by Khan he told her of a “chosen one” that would someday bring her reign of power to an end. He created Doom Slayer in HIS image just like the God in the Christian Bible created humans in HIS image. This sent her in a frenzy looking for the Slayer which resulted in experiments on the ACTUAL Slayer causing him to be as powerful as he is in gameplay (he was the only one of the sentinels who actually survived the experiments). I think Davoth literally recreated himself to a near tee so that he could get his revenge on the Khan Maykr through him and feel satisfaction that the last face she would see would be Davoth’s through Doom Slayer. The irony in it is that Davoth’s face would also be the last thing he himself sees through the very thing he created to get his revenge.

Judging by the lore of Part II though it also makes it unlikely that Davoth was the one who cried out “NOOOO” at the death of Khan in the main campaign and could’ve instead been either The Father or a being from another reality that the Khan had made a deal with like she did with Davoth. It’s interesting to think about but the different realms introduced in Eternal will likely be what leads into Doom 3 and won’t actually be focused on killing demons. At least not demons from hell.

Wasn't it stated somewhere in TAG Part 1's codex that the Dark Lord takes the form of whatever the demons fear most?

It's also worth mentioning that Davoth had no hand in having Doomguy arrive to Argent D'nur; the selection process for a candidate to become the Slayer was done at random, meaning that it was ultimately Davoth's rotten luck that Samur ended up selecting the one angry foreigner with a zero-tolerance policy towards anything remotely demonic in origin/allegiance/whatever.

Also, Hugo confirms that Davoth is only a Lucifer figure within Eternal's lore; there is indeed a being higher than him, and is also the one which the mysterious voice heard on Urdak belongs to.

I think Hugo stating that 2016 is a reboot makes me think these games were reboot first before the notion of Slayer being Doomguy came after.
Like how Doom 3 is clearly a reboot just retelling the premise of the originals.
Which explains why these games feel so different in a lot of ways and how i even suspected Slayer could be the OG Doomguy was by acknowledging the potential fanservice/memes involved or influenced in the new character.
Like, something "clicked" and i recognized it.
They also may be working on a comic to extend the story a bit more and confirmed that The Wretched that helped build the Praetor suit wasn't exactly thought out in Eternal.

The notion that the lore became a mess may not seem out of place in Doom of all things, but to me, it's also about the overall identity these games provide in the series.
Specially if a new game features new villains that aren't Hell anymore, because even Wolfenstein is still about the Nazis (Unless there's a plot about remaining demon leaders that i forgot about, like how there's someone above the Dark Lord, making me wonder if it's the 5 creatures from the concept art).
I assume an excuse to create newer worlds and factions is because how limited UAC and Hell can be, when the latter always had potential for variety that was not used much outside of fan wads and now has rules that technically weren't there before.
I feel like if a new game had a different canon, even if it was just a reiteration of the new stuff, some people probably wouldn't mind, as long as that game still had familiar gameplay elements and new ones as well.
Like, it wouldn't overwrite the Slayer games and it'd be an experimental spin-off, but i wonder whether or not people would prefer the "canon" in a reboot-ish spin-off over the main games, if differences included Samuel not being Seraphim or Hell being more mysterious and abstract.
Or if the Dark Lord was more of a reverse Doomguy, both design and gameplay-wise.
I know they're going to make either more of these games or an expansion, so i hope they at least have more new and fresh gameplay ideas.

I looked and could not find it.
I was the one who thought the same but looking into it I couldn’t find it either. I guess the fact that he says “you in their world” after all that stuff about only someone who could tame the demons could lead them made it seem like Davoth took on the form of whatever they feared most. At least to me.

It seems this "form they fear most" explanation is a case of the Mandela effect. Cause I've seen other people offering this explanation without being able to cite it.

Honestly, I wish it was the reason. Since it's simple and would imply Doomguy is only special because of what he has accomplished and not because destiny.

But Hugo is implying it has something to with primevals or something now.
