At Smash's Gate - The Doom Marine/Doomguy/Doom Slayer Thread

Say, you know what would be EXTREMELY telling of whether or not Doom Slayer's in Smash, I just realized? If we datamine the game and find Netherrack textures in Smash.

For context, Netherrack is the material only found in the Nether, which is basically literal Minecraft Hell, and is generally a very weak block. Furthermore, in some stages, the Dirt block is retextured as sand in Mushroomy Kingdom or Ice in Summit. If we datamine Netherrack in Smash, this shoots up Doom Slayer's chances by a mile. Now it could be other demon-related characters like Dante, but Netherrack in Smash would most certainly be telling.

I'd be iffy on it being Netherrack.

Besides the fact that it wouldn't seem feasible to introduce a whole new block for Steve to use on a single stage, the sounds it makes (and an old name of it being Bloodstone) greatly suggest that the block is somewhat organic in composition.

And I don't know about anyone here, but I doubt any locations with Gore Nests and Hellgrowth as a primary setpiece would rank high on the Smash devs' list of Doom stage candidates.

To be fair, a bunch of block textures in Minecraft are on one single sheet rather than spread out through a bunch of images, and they copied assets directly from Minecraft in Steve's challenger pack. It's likely that they have the Netherrack texture already, but only as a result of directly copy-pasting the block sheet rather than anything else.

As far as a Doom stage can go, you could mix certain themes or different worlds, specially if you take advantage of Doom 1/2's texture set and new things from later games.
Knowing how Minecraft's stage has backgrounds and stuff based off Sakurai's experiences with the game, imagine if a Doom stage was based off classic maps literally made by id for the game, so you even have floor sectors built to resemble the Smash logo.
But going back, you could technically fuse modern UAC Mars with classic Phobos or some of Hell's more colorfull textures with brand new assets.
The Sentinel and Urdak may be more difficult because they're new themes entirely.
Speaking of ammo, i know Eternal and maybe 3 had ammo specific sounds unless we use a classic "universal" sound if that is somehow "safer".

I imagine Nintendo would go with classic Doom and the stage would likely be based on E 1-1. Another great option though could be the Final Stage of Episode 3 with the Spider Mastermind. That arena could covert nicely into a Smash Stage if done correctly.

I basically see it with the central area that opens up on both sides, the green floor, and raised elevated platform on each side to. It would be shaped like this: U-U with the "-" being the building in the middle.

I don't see Doomguy happening though :(. Sakurai and Nintendo are very Japanese centric and FPS are just not as iconic in Japan as they are in USA. This is why we are getting characters like Joker who are NOT that big in the West but are HUGE in Japan. (I think Joker won a recent poll in Japan as the most popular character addition. He is likely my least favorite, at least among 3rd-parties so we there are clearly different tastes between each region).

Persona is pretty popular in the west too, more popular then Doom is in Japan I'd bet, especially P5. I'd point more toward the Dragon Quest Heroes as an example of as a pick that's super is popular in Japan but barley acknowledged in the west.

Though it is pretty apparent there is more favoritism to JRPG characters then any other genre since they make up half of the DLC.

I had never heard of Persona until Smash. I had heard of Dragon Quest though. Granted, Persona is likely not popular in my area. I will say this, a few of the people in the line at GameStop knew it. I am in my mid-30s so a different culture entirely. I was in elementary school in the 1990s so I saw the impact of the original Doom. (Interestingly, Goldeneye and Halo were just as big as Doom).

Doom was always more of an adult game as well. The Audience that like Doom are likely not very common at Gaming Conventions and do NOT watch Nintendo Directs as a whole.

It is kind of sad how the Gaming Media (at least some of it) favors console games over PC games. I find some of the most innovative games coming out on PC (especially during 1990s with Sim City, Civilization, Diablo, etc.). PC games also have far greater replayability and longevity. Diablo 2 was a long running title on BattleNet and still has following today despite being made in 1999.

Most console games you can complete in 30-40 hours while PC games generally have Scenario Editors, multiple Campaigns, etc. that can keep you playing for 1000 hours if you wanted. Take Civilization, you can literally design a different world and setup in the Scenario Editor or randomly generate it to get a different experience each time. Hard to do that with Console games.

Sad thing is some of the best games ever made were on PC but some Gaming News (IGN for example) rarely talk about them. Gamespy seems to give a lot of love to PC titles. Doom was always more popular on PCs than Consoles although it has probably been ported to nearly every console that you can think of.

You should also keep in mind that there's a lot of stuff going on in Japan that brought Doom in the spotlight too, at least for a good while. Yeah, I don't think Doomguy would be in the picture or deserving if not for the reboots (Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal). It brought attention back to a forgotten Franchise that once dominated the video game space.

Doom 1 + 2 are still, by far, my favorites though and I have both of them on my Switch. I have been enjoying some of the new Mods people have designed for them. I just played through Doom Zero.

That Labo Garage recreation is impressive.
You either put other games in Doom or the other way around.
I feel like Doom lately has gained a certain level of popularity among other places, that Japanese Smash fans are aware of why western fans would want Doomguy to be in.
Then again, i was always familiar with certain franchises before Smash, because i was the kind of guy to play flash games and even emulated old games, along with watching Newgrounds sprite animations and even AVGN-esque content, to know a bit more about games than some of my friends and family members.
I also feel like a true mixture of the games as opposed too "too modern or too classic" could work, specially with 64 and 3 added.
I also wonder if the challenge of adding an FPS character can involve looking up certain franchises for inspiration, like Contra or Metal Slug (Even with surface level comparisons).

Someone used the song Lifelight on the Doom Eternal TV ad, and that got removed.
That's...rather strange. I mean in other cases where takedowns led to some sort of content we got Banjo and Sans, as well as the return of the Geno Mii Costume. I'm more skeptical about this one, tbh. Doom Slayer would be amazing, don't get me wrong, I'm just...I dunno, feeling really cautious.

Apparently, I learned this JUST recently, but someone posted Lifelight on Twitter as an experiment, and it hasn't been taken down by Nintendo despite getting more attention than the Lifelight-Doom tweet. Either Nintendo's legal team aren't that eagle-eyed, or this might be leading to Doom Slayer's inclusion. The more I think about this, the more I'm getting sold, tbh. Honestly, I won't care either way, as everything so far is just icing on the cake for me, but if true, that's even better!

I can't take the missing content thing seriously but it wouldn't be a true Smash reveal without last minute false hope that it would be somebody you're rooting for. I'm hoping whoever they show at E3 isn't somebody really underwhelming, the roster for this game is pretty good as is but I wouldn't want the last characters to be dull.

Watch we get Dovahkiin as the fighter and Doom Slayer is Mii costume.
Could easily happen but I'd be bored by it, I didn't like Skyrim so it's pretty far down the list of WRPG preferences. Even from Bethesda I'd take a Fallout protagonist but obviously that's not going to happen. Of course if they wanted to go with the most sensible yet simultaneously most left-field pick possible it would be the Avatar from Ultima. Regardless I would not be surprised if Doom doesn't get anything at this rate, all this stuff was settled ages ago probably. If we're talking id Mii costumes give me Ranger with a Quake 1 textured face

If true it's Master Chief. That's not at all underwhelming and the music/sci-fi theme will be good but disappointing to me personally. That puts Doomguy behind 3 Microsoft veterans for the next game so I don't think he'll ever happen now

I made my peace with the possibility of Chief awhile ago despite preferring Doomguy, so whatever. To be fair I guess, Chief for Smash has been a pipe dream since at least Brawl, while supporting Doomguy only became realizable after Doom 2016. I wouldn't dismiss Doomguy as a never ever going forward though just because Chief happened to get in first.

Assuming this is all true and Verge's streak doesn't break here.

Doom Eternal's Ancient Gods Part 1 DLC comes out on the Switch later today, which is good - I was worried that they just wouldn't release it, like what happened with the Wolfenstein 2 DLC.

Well Doomguy's definitely not happening for Ultimate because E3 was the time to show him but that leak was evidently bogus so I have some hope for him showing up in the future.

e: Of course that's without considering the case where the leak is true but for the last fighter which I doubt considering the nature of the character. As an aside this year's entire E3 was quite a disappointment.

Well Since Lloyd got hit with a deconfirmed combo from Kazuya and will probably be thrown into Mii Status (Unless a Miracle happens)
I can put the rest of my smash ultimate support energy behind Doomslayer. Doomslayer has a chance to be in smash and it's a bigger chance then what most people think.

Well, it wasn't Doom Slayer/Doomguy but we got a character with 'cool' factor around him like our green Marine. He looks and plays cool.

At this point, I don't think that our Hellish Warrior is going to make it to Smash in this time around but the potential has been planted with his iconic status, the franchise being available in one Nintendo console and the focus on the series as it has been better than ever.

Maybe one day. Keep on RIP'n and TEARING, everyone.

While at it, i just thought of 3 random things for no reason: If the Levitator in RoE somehow appeared in Smash, how apparently Project X Zone referenced Doom (The saying “hi” to the Cyberdemons bit was probably localization i think) and that Halo spin-off for the Nintendo DS.

Not sure what to make of the Dragonborn Mii. I feel bad for Skyrim fans of course, but maybe it's better to get something rather than nothing. For me, however, I'd say I definitely prefer Doom to not be in the game at all then having a mii costume. That's probably just because I don't like Mii fighters though lol(except those "deluxe" ones). As for Doomguy's chances, I'm not too confident. I really feel like Nintendo is gonna end this pass with a first party character, just like they did with the last pass. That and it just makes sense to have 3 first party characters, and 3 third party characters. Either way if he gets in or doesn't, I've enjoyed my time posting here, and speculating about Doomguy and just talking about the Doom series and Smash in general. I'll still feel like it's a missed opportunity if Ultimate ends without a single FPS rep, but I'd get over it. Overall I'd say I'm happy with Ultimate's roster, so I can't complain too much.

Still really rooting for Doomguy even though I'm starting to think we'll end up with a costume.

Sakurai saying "it could be a while before the final announcement" makes me think we could be waiting for the Game Awards which I still think is the perfect place to announce a big western character.

I don't think he's out of the running just yet. A ton of competition was just knocked out too with those mii costumes. I think Doomguy's biggest obstacle right now is Master Chief. I'd be happy with either of them though so I hope one of them gets in.
