Across the Universe
"Pools of sorrow, waves of joy
Are drifting through my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
Sounds of laughter, shades of life
Are ringing through my opened ears
Inciting and inviting me
Limitless, undying love
Which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on
Across the universe"
Strawberry Fields Forever
"Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone, but it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me
Always know sometimes it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know, I mean, ah, yes
But it's all wrong
That is, I think I disagree"
Very reminiscent of James Joyce. I like it, especially with his delivery.
But really, they specialize in selling a song on simpler lyrics, which is perfectly valid and difficult to pull off skillfully. Someone described it as an economical approach, which is uncommon for young musicians full on their own poetic prowess. "Blackbird" is a good example.
And a great many songs which are emotional and relatable, like "Nowhere Man" or the Abbey Road Medley. "Carry That Weight" was used at the end of Cowboy Bebop because it is a highly identifiable, and poignant, example of that theme common to the song and show. That was like the cherry on top of a cake of perfection when I saw that. Favorite band wrapping up favorite anime!
"In My Life" is my favorite song of theirs and embodies both of the above ideas.
"There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone, and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all"
Heartrending nostalgia, the best emotion
