Throughout my experience in Melee, I've noticed that the majority of players, while having a designated main, will use a different character if for one reason or another they don't think they can get the job done with their main. But I've never been able to bring myself to do this, because as a Peach main, I've dedicated the majority of my time playing Melee to learning how to use her to the best of my abilities. While I'm competent with other characters, and struggle vigorously in a few matchups, I've placed all of my faith in my main, and would almost feel as if I were betraying her if I used a different character in tournament. I know this probably sounds kind of stupid, given that the characters in Melee aren't real, but I was wondering if anyone is in a similar ordeal, or if most players simply just look at their characters as pawns to showcase their skills in Melee.

I wanted to escape the cliche of saying "Oh, I'd be cheating on Peach if I chose a different character" in the original post, lol. But in a way, that's kind of how I'd feel.

I've reached the point where I have absolutely no motive to select any other character. Link IS this game to me. Playing as anyone else just feels wrong.

Even in friendlies?
Pretty much. Unless it's REALLY FRIENDLY friendlies, but the fact is that I'm total garbage with every other character.
I actually worry that people get bored of playing against the same character in extended sets of friendlies.

I don't get emotional attachment to a character. It's a game.
And I honestly don't get how people can spend so much time on a game but completely ignore everything but 1% of it

Yeah, at one point or another I've had at least 2/3rds of the roster be my main or secondary. I've had what=??? 5 mains in Melee (Kirby in 2001-2002, Roy in 2002-2003, Link from 2003-2005, Falco in 2005-2006, no clear main in 2006, and Fox from 2007-present). While I am fairly comfortable with Fox, I still like to bust out my 2 secondary characters, a few other characters I like to use, and random as heck characters.

I guess part of this reason is I like knowing all of the characters. At the very least, it would allow me to be at least competent (given my skill level) at a 26 character challenge!

Then there are also a few characters I have golden rules (Roy, Mewtwo, Ness, Bowser, Kirby, Pichu) to where if someone picks them, you have to do dittos as a test of manliness.

Literally if someone goes Roy, you have to go Roy back. It is the law of the universe. You can't fight fire with water. That doesn't make sense. You have to fight fire with ph1r3. ;)

Characters aren't pawns to showcase my skills in the game.

But they are pawns to entertain me.

I play for fun. I play whoever I feel like playing. No emotional attachments here.

I get what your saying, it's pretty much happened with every one of my mains. Now I can't turn my back on that little pink marshmellow but there was a time when I couldn't betray that ace pilot of mine.

I don't practice with my main as much as I probably should in friendlies, sometimes I'll goof around and play young link or bowser or captain falcon instead, but when it comes to tournament, even if I know I'm going into an abysmal matchup for ness, I can't bring myself to change characters, because I figure that if I really want to be considered a (maybe, sorta-kinda, not really lol) good ness main, I have to stay true to that title. It's less of an emotional attachment to my main and more of a commitment I've made.
Regardless, I do have some attachment to ness, he was always my favorite character growing up playing this game, and the MOTHER series is probably my favorite video game franchise of all time, so that might play a small part in it

I've played Roy since I unlocked him. Besides a brief two month falco break (I was horrible).
Anyways, I still use other characters because I'm still learning the game and want to practice other skills. But no other character feels the same way as Roy, emotional attachment maybe, but I don't feel bad player other chars

It's not as much of an emotional attachment as it is a pride thing. Come to think of it, I dont use Ganon in friendlies nearly as much as I should, simply because when Ganon comes out it becomes a seriously instead. I have a lot of pride in my Ganon, to the point of not even joking around with him (too much).

If I had all the time in the world, I'd probably play 20-some characters. In order to actually improve with the little time I get to play, I just stick with Falco/Marth/Fox.

I kind of get what you're saying, but it's not like I feel really happy when I see another Captain Falcon or bird win. And when I'm goofing around on other characters, I don't care either way whether I win or lose.

I think it's more of a question of "I only really feel involved in the game when I'm playing a character I'm comfortable with" than "I am specifically attached to this latex-clad-roid-raging-space-nascar-racing-bodybuilder and/or mascera-wearing-manbird."

I can tell by your name that you will never cheat on peach lol.

As a fox main, I have a hard time vs Marth. Their are no marth mains in my island and fox himself has a hard time against marth. I use sheik against that match up. Apart from that, it's just fox since 06.

i have an emotional attachment to ics but i main peach because she is legit a better char and i can play her in teams. i think ics is doable in teams but peach has sooo much priority. i think playing ics can be painted with the same brush, the skill barely transfers.

I feel this might be a peach thing to some degree since she is a character who is so different from all the others. The time and effort to play and use her well doesnt help u use other characters to the same degree as other characters.

This being said in friendlies i might switch from peach depending on who i am facing against and who they r using

I have an attachment to Sheik. I don't think I will ever know a woman (or want to know a woman, for that matter) with the same degree of intimacy that I have invested in her. We have our fights every now and then, but even after all these years she still has pleasant surprises for me when we play.

I love Mewtwo. I always will.
And I love my secondaries, Jiggs and Marth.
I love all the characters <3

But I do feel like I have a special connection with Mewtwo, yes. Using other characters does feel like I'm going to give myself bad karma.

Although I don't main a mid/low tier character, I do find a little emotional attachment to Marth. When it's friendlies, I'll pretty much stick to just him and maybe randoms for the hell of it. But when it's a tournament setting and I feel like I'm in a situation where I feel a lot more comfortable using a different character, it's usually a pretty easy decision to make.

I've always been the person who bounces around with characters but ends up at Fox. No matter what I try, Fox is just like "Sup?" and Im like "Oh hi kickass old friend <3"

I play every character but Yoshi and Luigi pretty much every week in friendlies.

My main is stupid, but if I was good with another character that would be my main. I'm long past the point where I care if the character is my favorite or not.

Besides, my favorite character is awful, and I like winning more than reppin' Eagleland.

I feel like that Yoshi is my best friend, I've tried to change my main many times, but something does not allow me to change him,we are an inseparable duo.

Peach is astounding, and amazing, and there isn't anyone else quirky, odd, or quite elegant enough for me. It sounds silly and cheesy, sure, but I'm probably never going to switch from her ever (even though she frustrates me sometimes, and people hate her like she killed their families). So sure, I guess I have an emotional attachment to her.

Zelda is also pretty tight too, but she's bad. :\

I mean I like some characters more than others, but its a feel or fun thing, not an emotional attachment. I'll pick other characters sometimes based on what I feel like doing and it doesn't really bother me to do so.

What island do you live on?

I can give you a prime example of a certain person, but its in Brawl, want me to show you?
Yes please. I'm quite interested.
