I mained marth since I unlocked him in elementary school when the game first came out, all the way up until I switched to peach in 2007ish when someone said that they thought I'd be good with peach. I just starting picking her and did way better with her than any other character despite having barely played her at all before that. Ever since, I've always been best with her despite putting much more practice into other characters. I guess she's grown on me, it almost feels like a "It was just meant to be" thing.

My secondaries Marth and Pikachu get a lot of love though. Marth is really nostalgic, and I need him for a couple matchups, while I find pikachu the most fun to play, and as a result of picking him so much, my pikachu is definitely my 3rd best character. The most I'll ever get fired up at someone is when they tell me to "try picking a higher tier character against me." Then I just put on try hard pants because I have to show them that my pika CAN stand up to high tier characters. I never make tier johns with pikachu, ever. (I mean, imagine if Axe made tier johns, lol)

tl;dr, I have an attachment to my top 3 characters.

Also, Get Low, you didn't make this thread in response to me recommending that you maybe pick up a secondary to help you with the marth matchup did you?

Not exactly. However, when you took the first game off of me with Marth in that set at that kid's house, I knew that I could probably switch to Jigglypuff and beat you, since I'm really good at that matchup with Jiggs. But then I felt like I would be betraying Peach if I ever did that, so I stuck with my girl and lost. But I new if I would've switched and beaten you, I wouldn't have felt very satisfied with myself.

And then I made this thread. :D

Jiggs and Peach are the two characters I specifically switch to marth to beat, I'm really comfortable with marth/jiggs.

Last I remember, I was being really impatient and running into stuff that I wouldn't if I was being really patient and serious outside a friendly. I'll MM your jiggs if you're going to be at dempt's tomorrow.

No thanks. I don't have the confidence to money match you, nor do I have the money to spend.

Ok, then I guess we can just have a super serious honor who's-better match then. Sorry for getting off topic.

Although the fact that I believe in my character's performance abilities could be an "emotional attachment"

I dont know, I'm still trying to find a main that I can stick with. I've been having trouble with this, and am currently playing fox, falco, puff, marth, samus, and falcon at around the same level. I personally like playing other characters as well, such as ganon, because they give me a different feel and playstyle in the game. I really want to stick with fox, falco, and falcon, but whenever I try, I play puff or samus and feel like they're just really fun, and end up going back to them. I need to improve with fox or falco though :/

It's not really an emotional attachment but more like because I have tried a lot of characters in the past and played a lot obviously that I can assess what best suits my style. And obviously in the end, I chose Ganon because I like powerful character and offensive styles. Though in a long run with experience, it's simply not enough so sticking with one main is good to gain a lot of experience but sometimes it's better to switch character in order to beat certain players that already know your character or style.

I've made a decision recently between my 2 characters (Falco/Pika) that if I use one character during a tourney I shouldn't switch from that character for the tourney...reason being I want to be proficient with both, and if I really wanted to prove to myself that I could do well with both I should play one character per tourney.

As for an "emotional attachment," no I don't really have one. Maybe a little to Pika since I feel obligated to improve my Pika game so much, but at the same time I don't play him nearly that much in friendlies since I don't feel like many people enjoy playing vs Pika. Over time I end up mostly playing Falco but that's only because he's way too fun to stop playing.

My philosophy has been to play characters other than one's main in order to further their main's game play, if for no other reason. I think one's main would only approve of doing so :p

One can spend all the time they want playing 'x' against 'y,' watching matches of 'x' against 'y,' or reading about how 'x' can play against 'y,' but by actually playing as 'y' ('x' of course being one's main) one can build an intuitive understanding of how 'y' is played in a wide variety of dynamic situations, it's strengths and weaknesses, and how to effectively counter/react with 'x.'

You could also find that you enjoy using 'y' in the process, or at the very least build up a reasonable amount of confidence in using it for future applications.

For the longest time I wouldn't touch Demo in TF2, and for an equally long time they would have their way with me. A hundred or two hours of playing Demo later, they became nothing more than another predictable, high priority target. It was only from my own learning experience with the class that I was able to overcome any problems in playing against it. The very same premise holds true in SSB.
