When is it useful? I don't want a "when it's with mindgames" answer. Is there ever really a situation where airdodging in place is more useful than airdodging in a direction? It would be really helpful if there are tourney videos demonstrating examples.

To tell you the truth its never ideal to air dodge in place. It would only be useful if you did it and your opponent saw it but thought you would air dodge in a direction and misses the grab when you land, allowing you to put some space between you. Other than that I don't know why you wouldn't put a direction on it.

The best time to airdodge in place is when you want to dodge an air attack without moving. Its up to you to decide when that is.

i'd say under the same circumstances in which you'd tech in place
they're kinda close right?

I remember dodging a Falcon's raptor boost by air-dodging in place, then landing and punishing it.

If you dodge a raptor boost by air-dodging in place, you also have a chance to make that Falcon raptor-boost off the ledge if they don't space properly. :)

Its much much better to just do a sidestep, a lot less lag involved, well. . . unless your already in the air, but its still better to airdodge up in the case of a raptor boost

Airdodging in a certain direction is almost always better

also, airdodging in place is nothing at all like teching in place

I once falcon punched for edge gaurd my brother's marth airdodged backwards and I got a grab to more edge gaurd if he dodged in place he would've been fine.

He's saying that if you get hit before you touch the ground after an airdodge and you didn't use your midair jump you'll have it. Not talking about the Brawl airdodge.

lolol pressing "L" or "R" midair will now be called "directional (or stationary) airspaces."

wait, really?

EDIT: tried it, it works, however, it doesn't matter if you went in a direction or not, you will get your jump back regardless. At first I thought that dodging up would cause you to not get your second jump again, but I think that I was just using my second jump just before the airdodge, as when I jumped by holding up and then dodged without letting go of the control stick, I got the second jump back. This is new and interesting information to me.

I have never found a real use for triangle jumping nor have I ever seen it used deliberately. >_> Wavedashing serves a better function for spacing, and spot-dodging is usually the better option for dodges.

If you airdodge you keep your double jump if you didn't use it.
idk about that
You DO keep your second jump if you airdodge and haven't used it yet.

This is very useful for Samus/Link/Ylink because you can airdodge in any direction (including upwards), use your tether recovery to hook onto a wall, and be able to double jump afterwards too.

Just something random too: For Fox/Falco, if you are hit out of your up-b while you are charging up your fire and you haven't used your second jump yet, you will be able to use it once you're able to move again.

Anyways, as a response to this thread... Sometimes I airdodge in place if a Samus shoots a charged shot at me and my shield is too low and I don't wanna block it, and if I roll towards her it would put me in a position to be punished by her. I guess you could use an airdodge in place for similar situations lol.

the **** is triangle jumping
For those who don't know what triangle jumping is:

short hop air dodging was a legit advanced technique. It was called SHADing.

expect to see it in silent wolf's new tech skill video
