Defeated Gary easily thanks to two crits from Thundershock.

Route 1 Encounter: Rattata – Slain (No Pokeballs)
Obvious Plot crap done. Pokedex and Town Map get.
Purchased 10 Pokeballs, 3 Antidotes, 2 Potions.

Route 22 Encounter – Lvl. 2 Nidoran(M) – CAUGHT! Named Nysyarc!
Profound Sadness. Nysyarc has been crithaxed by a Pidgey. Stricken down in his prime.

Route 2 Encounter – Level 5 Pidgey – CAUGHT! Named Aetherius.
Viridian Forest Encounter – Level 6 Pidgey – CAUGHT! Named Nairplane.
Route 2 (pt.2) Encounter – Level 6 NidoranM – CAUGHT! Named Nyke.
Now in Pewter.

I didn't realize I was still on route 2 until after catching Nyke, but it's separated by the forest, so **** it, I don't care.
