  • I will never understand why people like unlockable content in fighting games and shooters. Other genres like kart racers where characters are cosmetic I can understand, but in the internet age of spoilers; DLC; and viral marketing there's no room for unlockable characters and stages in games where each character plays different.

I feel like it gives you something to do. Something to work towards.

Although when it comes to fighting games I do prefer to have all the characters at least from the beginning.
HEY, YOU'RE PRETTY MATURE THAN I THOUGHT - GOOD GOING

Considering all the PaRappa songs were written in English by Japanese people, it's impressive that there's only one instance of bad grammar.
A small part of me hopes Daisy really is missing from Party Superstars so Nintendo will see the passion people have for her and start giving her bigger roles - Waluigi was absent from Kart 7 and because of backlash hasn't missed a Mario game where he could logically appear since, (and has become a lot more prominent in marketing) even if he has stayed as another multiplayer option.
If Crash got in Smash, I hope the Twinsanity tracks either aren't remixed or have remixed and original forms coexist - I really want to know how people who either don't play Crash or aren't familiar with the games between CTR and the renakes would react to this song:
I feel we're about to enter a golden age for licensed games. This past half-a-decade has had less licensed games than the 90s or 00s, but they've been so much better - and when studios realise getting talented devs to work on IPs they're passionate about is what sells a product, we'll get quality and quantity.
Garfield in Nick Brawl honestly feels like a no-brainer to me. The way Garfield funcitons as a comic strip, taking 5 or so running gags and finding new ways to subvert and spice them up every day, is absolutely perfect for a platform fighter and just how beloved/iconic Garfield is more than outweighs his current lack of Nick relevance.
The reason nobody takes gaming music seriously is because if a general music fan asks a gaming music enthusiast to show them an example of great gaming music they'll most likely play something that sounds like this:
That Shantae Mii Costume Tweet is so memorable to me. The fact that someone felt the need to comment "I'm so sorry, this is the worst thing that could've happened ):" to the character's creator who was celebrating her confirmation in spite of the smaller scale is both disgusting in its ungratefulness and harrowing in showing how hype culture can be internalised. "Sad cringe" if ever I've seen it.

I've never been much of a Shantae fan or supporter personally, but it genuinely did warm my heart to see how excited the creator was that she was getting in, even as a Mii Fighter. Like, I feel like it genuinely must be a truly magical feeling to know that something you did, something you made, touched so many people on a global scale that it was added to a celebration of the media you adore and chose to contribute to. I've always thought of Smash as a sort of celebration of gaming history, and seeing your creation (especially given Shantae is generally considered an indie title) as a part of that celebration must genuinely be such a heartwarming experience.

People for some reason like to project their thoughts or hatred of something with the creators of said stuff they like or dislike

Even this community tends to do It with Sakurai (as It is the case with the now infamous memes)

I've been working on my own game project - just conceptualisation for now - and, I've said this many times before but, having my characters in Smash in any form would be a nightmare to me. The main reasons are that I don't want my characters in a game that pushes season passes and I'd rather support smaller platfighters - but even if there were no season passes and Smash shared an equal non-monopolised spotlight to the likes of Zetterburn and SpongeBob, I could still name tens of reasons I don't want them in, possibly a hundred.

Maybe I'm just miserable and ungrateful-for-things-I'll-likely-never-have but my game's eventual fandom would be lucky to have my characters in the same Nintendo Direct as Smash, let alone a Spirit and Mii Costume. To me an honour would be being trusted with actually working on my childhood gaming heroes like Pac-Man and Wario, be it as guests or an indie-outsourced game, not having my characters appear in the same game as them.
This legitimately sounds terrible - how did Nintendo approve this?
Just rewatched SMG4's Teletubby TV - I feel ashamed for ever finding this funny. I was on the verge of tears and only laughed as a coping mechanism. "Bored to tears" sounded like a simile until today, even the meta-gag of Mario being tied up and forced to watch the episode didn't resonate with me because Mario wasn't upset enough for me to relate - and I was watching it by choice!

My generation deserved better content - even the real Teletubbies (the show so mindless people thought it was a malicious conspiracy against the youth) provides more entertainment value and more to think about as an adult than this trainwreck does - the solarpunk archetechture, the quirky character designs, the soothing yet silly atmosphere, the creative technology, all of those can be appreciated through an adult lens. I would be concerned for anyone over 16 who found this video funny, even for nostalgia.

I am aware SMG4 was around 14 or 15 when he made this video, and while that could justify the outright offensive jokes because of a lack of world-wearyness, it doesn't justify the sheer lack of comedy and creativity - it is so bad that it negates the benefit of inexperience.
Scott the Woz has an aura about him that cancels out comedy. Even on the rare occasion he says something actually witty or clever I cannot bring myself to laugh.

I would really love serious videos a la Gaming Historian on some of the topics he covers, there's some really fascinating stuff but I don't want to sit through all the unfunny jokes inbetween.
There is no excuse for the bland, unthemed fonts in current day Nintendo games. If it was for accessibility it'd also be used in Splatoon and Fire Emblem, which I'd argue are the only Nintendo series that still put thought into the fonts they use. If it was for professionalism, that's a selling the products thing, not an inside the products thing.

It's especially egregious with the new WarioWares. Those old fonts made up so much of WarioWare's personality, and they already had HD versions in Smooth Moves.
A lot of the WarioWare characters would be really easy to introduce into Mario multiplayer games - casual and younger fans who only really care about Kart and Party likely wouldn't be confused by the employees popping up out of nowhere because of how self-explanatory their designs tend to be. Like, imagine you're a kid, you don't even know that Wario has his own games, and you just got the new Mario Kart for your 7th birthday. You boot it up to see all your favourite Mario heroes and villains are back - but there's also 3 new characters:

You just glance at them and you know exactly what their main quirks are and what mood they convey - you then tell all your friends at school who haven't got the game yet that the new characters are a disco dancer, a cyborg scientist, and a witch girl and they'll likely either draw up similar images in their mind or, if they're more in the loop on the game/played WarioWare, know exactly who you're talking about.

As much as I love a lot of the RPG characters and want to see them in major Mario games it's a bit harder to get a feel for their personality or even comprehend some elements of their design than with the Ware cast. A casual fan saying "singing robot from Mario Kart" or "alien with sunglasses from Mario Kart" makes a lot more sense without context and is easier to accurately imagine for a non-fan than say, "one-legged witch from Mario Kart" or "bean prince from Mario Kart".
I think this music list I made for BWD on the FP3 creation thread is as on-brand as you can possibly get for the character.

I really dislike when people say a reboot or continuation is bad just because a character they like is missing or had some characterisation/design change - especially when that instalment is actually bad. Slapping on Krystal won't fix Star Fox Zero's problems.
Filler post to push the auto-playing Reddit cat video off the home page so I can look at it without my background video being interrupted.
what the hell has this show turned into

I decided to try to figure out how many Mario characters have starring roles.
    1. Mario
    2. Stanley (Donkey Kong 3, Greenhouse)
    3. Donkey Kong Jr (Donkey Kong Jr.)
    4. Wario (Wario Land and WarioWare series)
    5. Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong Country series)
    6. Diddy Kong (Donkey Kong Country 2, Diddy Kong Racing)
    7. Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country 3)
    8. Cranky Kong (Donkey Kong Circus)
    9. Yoshi (Yoshi's Island series)
    10. Toad (Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Wario's Woods)
    11. Luigi (Mario is Missing!, Luigi's Mansion series)
    12. Peach (Super Princess Peach)
    13. Mini-Mario (Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 and onwards)
    14. Pyoro (Pyoro)
I was tempted to count Bowser Jr. and Goomba, but those were just side-content. The Paper Aeroplane has also not been considered due to being an inanimate object and the player's control going to the wind. Mini-Mario qualifies where Yarn Yoshi doesn't due to co-existing in-universe with the real deal, wheras there's nothing to say YY isn't the same or an alternate universe version. I am not counting promotional flash games - but if I did I know that Timber, Kiddy Kong, and Waluigi would be among the characters added.

I would personally count Rabbid Mario and Rabbid Peach too not just because the Rabbids are in the title of their respective game, but also because they are the first characters you play as in the game alongside Mario himself.

I dunno, that comes off more as a sidekick role than a main role. Same reason Poochy didn't qualify despite being quite a major part of Poochy + Yoshi's Woolly World and Cranky Kong is listed with DK Circus instead of Donkey Kong. Mini Mario is somewhat of an outlier, but in an escort game the "Lemming" is usually what you consoder the protagonist.
I feel Arms, as a game, is inherently incompatible with Smash. There is no possible way they could've made Min Min a good fighter design-wise, the closest I can think of is making it so her arms don't have hitboxes nor hurtboxes so her foes can slide between her hand and body for a grab, but at that point you should just put in a character with detachable limbs like Plok or Rayman instead.
"Nintendo Kart" is honest to god one of the worst frequent gaming fan requests ever - possibly even worse than "give Mario a gun" - actually think about this for 5+ seconds.
    1. Staples like Boom Boom and Goomba have never been playable in Mario Kart and would lose their chance
    2. Families and younger players would be confused as to the absence of a Mario Kart game on whatever console this releases for
    3. Mario Kart icons like Daisy, Koopa Troopa, King Boo, and most worryingly Waluigi would likely get the shaft
    4. A majority of Nintendo's characters would look silly on a kart, and it's pretty hard to make an all-scrimblo Nintendo roster without resorting to Literal Whos - the exact thing Nintendo hypebeasts hate most.
    5. Lesser known Mario characters such as (non-Ashley) Ware employees and RPG partners will have an even lower chance of breaking into the limelight.
    6. Courses will no longer have creative liberty, instead being forced to call back specific games - that means no more Coconut Malls, Water Parks, or Dragon Driftways.
    7. It'd be especially bad for fans of characters introduced to MK in Tour, as those characters would almost certainly never see an official console release in what could come off, intentionally or otherwise, as a twisted MTX-fuelled bait & switch. Pauline and Nabbit have big fandoms especially.
    8. It would take the crossover appeal away from Smash
