I think Nintendo's moral flaws as a business are super bad, and there are some areas where they're worse than the typical Acti/EA/Ubi rogues gallery (especially in regards to preservation and pricing, as well as the marketing of Smash specifically) but I also think that most of their flaws under Bowser - while not exactly overblown by any means - wouldn't have had the general public backlash they had if either Iwata and Reggie weren't so good at PR prior, or Bowser was as good as Iwata and Reggie at PR.

A few years ago I tried to do a "Games Repainted" version of Smash Melee - the changes I remember were

1. Luigi became Gonzo
2. DK became Mojo Jojo
3. Kirby became Trollface, and his Falco hat became O RLY
4. Link became DJ Lance Rock from Yo Gabba Gabba
5. Pikachu became Remy from Ratatouille
6. Captain Falcon became a muscular Big the Cat
7. Roy becoming Colonel Sanders, using a deep fried sword.
8. The Ice Climbers became the "Insurance Duo", consisting of Cara Confused and Aleksandr Orlov
9. Flat Zone becoming a Gizmondo (the Swedish mafia game console)
10. Mushroom Kingdom 1 becoming Springfield
11. Yoshi's Story becoming Monsters Inc. themed, for the "Randall" joke obviously
12. Food items including Silica Gel, the Annoying Orange, poop and the Jagged Metal Krusty-O
13. Changing the coins in coin mode to Chuck E. Cheese tokens and the Wallace & Gromit commemorative coin that released at the time

I'm sure I changed Ness and one of these characters' alts too, but I can't remember who to for the life of me. One idea I had but never tried to make was a Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon reskin for Pokémon Stadium where all the forms represented specific shows - but I don't think I decided what network or shows before losing interest and the data.

A small part of me is glad NASB didn't take off in a big way - every character has like 2 Mario fairs, hack fraud Smashtubers like Alpharad would milk that for all it's worth.

Cuphead is the absolute perfect side-over-protag series for Smash but y'all aren't ready to hear it. It's a game where the main draw is the bosses and their animation, plus its protagonists would be zoners if added.

Phelous/Bootleg Zones is hillarious in brief doses, but after more than 10 or so minutes (5 for certain videos) he gets really grating - probably by intent, but still.

I always thought bad music was a myth - anything that isn't a piano being smashed is listenable. Both infamously annoying songs and songs made as bad as possible as a joke I can at least vibe to a little.

imagine if playstation all stars 2 had the dog from dogs life in it so whenever characters in the platform fighter genre as a whole are discussed and compared as opposed to a single game you have to specify either "jake the dog from multiversus" or "jake the dog from psasbr2"

While I do generally think Smash lags behind a majority of, if not all, alternative platform fighters in most aspects (especially gameplay), I do think casual stages are a notable exception - while pretty much every other game has more visual variety in stages and a better lineup of competitive stages, Smash has way more layout variety for casual play. You wouldn't see a stage like Venom or Peach's Castle 64 in NASB or Rivals (forgivable in the case of the latter where even having casual stages is quite a surprise, and it's all made with sprites too)

I do feel that a lot of casual platform fighter stages tend to lack solid layouts, specifically because they like to avoid caves of life and walls. Often times they'll have a really cool casual stage mechanic but bog it down by just putting it into a Final Destination/Smashville clone instead of building a good stage layout to support it *cough*technodrome*cough*royal woods cemetery - though TBH Ultimate's new stages suffer from that too.

I was watching a YouTube video where someone mentioned an American commercial called "Kars 4 Kids" - I looked up the commercial and honestly I cannot imagine what else it could be but teaching children to drive. Are all American charity commercials this non-descript, and is underage driving that socially acceptable there?

I love how Hugh's stage in NASB looks like a lazy asset recycle, but has almost entirely original models not used in Hugh's moveset (I believe one of the smaller background pies comes fron Garfield, but that's it - the ducks Hugh throws are porcelain while the inanimate ducks in the stage are parade floats) - like, they wanted it to look like that. Based Fair Play Labs.

I've never really been a fan of bosses in platform fighters/platform fighter concepts. Feels like a waste of a potential character to me - even when it's a variant like Ganon I'd rather have two Ganons over one playable Ganondorf and an super flashy unplayable Ganon.

I feel one aspect that is sorely overlooked by a lot of people when trying discuss 1st party Smash picks (or more niche 3rd parties) with any reasoning beyond "theyre cool " is the appeal that character will or won't have to outsiders - or basically, the fundamental concept and design of the character once you strip away your emotional attachment to their personality and adventures. To a Kirby fan, Bandana Waddle Dee is an insecure hero who longs to be respected like his friends are, but to a non-fan, he's just a Goomba in a hat. While we all I know I'm no Geno fan, I can at least say he has a fundamentally fun concept and design - even if you don't know about him being a star taking a physical form or whatever, you can still see a cloaked puppet with go-go-gadget gun fingers and think "that's cool". People don't just give characters "cool ratings" for being in Smash alone, Smash needs to prove that they're cool, and the inherent non-personality-driven nature of a crossover fighting game (combined with Smash's probably-wise-but-still-limiting avoidance of dialogue) removes a lot of characters' ability to be cool.

It's part of the reason I've turned away from supporting Muddy Mole so avidly (alongside my shift to belief in a true COGH roster), he's just... a rodent who throws things. Not really too appealing without context.

I want to go back in time and tell 17 year old me that I'll absolutely loathe the current state of Smash Bros, partake in multiple flame wars related to Jimmy Neutron's dad, and both of those events are directly related.

Nintendo licensing games vs. ESRB rating online interactions

After posting that dumb meme status about Drawn to Life, I've been trying to look more into the series' history and what motivated those bizarre storytelling decisions - allegedly (so take this with a grain of salt) the CEO and lead developer (who supposedly stole the latter role from another dev on some projects) was a zealous Christian who made the company's (5th Cell) logo as an abstract crucifix and attempted to convert his employees in spite of bragging about his workplace's religious and racial diversity, (which sure makes the whole Creator/Mary & Joseph = Mari and Jowee/T-pose hero drawing stuff a lot more uncomfortable now) and stole budget assigned to certain projects for his passion project shooter game (Hybrid I believe) - the ending was basically just a hollow attempt to be edgy and had a lot of pushback from the rest of the dev team.

I feel that often times lists of "best game music" tend to just be "the best games and their best music" or "the best uses of music in video games" - like, if you could somehow listen to every game ever's soundtrack and then rank them isolated from their source material there'd be less Sonic or Final Fantasy and a lot more "Lindt Chocolate Bunnies' Puzzle Adventure for the GBC (Germany only)" or "Dunston Checks In: The Official Video Game for Amiga (unreleased, reskin of The Care Bears Movie 2 for NES)"
