  • With the execption of Brawl and arguably 3DS/Wii U base game, Fire Emblem has really always been over-repped in Smash - but in every area that isn't character it tends to be under-repped.
Keeping my hopes down this time - Wumpa League and a Smash character I don't utterly despise. That's all I need. Not falling back into the hype culture.
The most likely of my most wanted to show up here is either Waluigi or Crash.

Hmm, I wonder if we'll see Wumpa League? I hope so.
Even if the "Subscribe to PewDiePie" meme wasn't appropriated by the alt-right or used to vandalise memorials and everything was 100% legal and ethical, it'd still be extremely obnoxious, intrusive, and petty.
"Dolled up instalments" (Mean Bean Machine, Tetris Attack, Cranky Food Friends, Yo! Noid, Crazy Castle series, Mario 2, e.t.c.) are the most awesome thing in gaming history and need to be brought back immediately. Make it paid DLC, provide a localised version of the original as free DLC, scam people into buying the game twice, I don't care how you do it - I just want Dr. Eggman in my blob-popping puzzle game.
Those SpongeBob text-to speech ICUP/word prank videos are really cool to me because it's basically the Hey Beter format losing all its irony and turning back into exactly what it was based on: kids having fun with immature humour.
I've always loved the concept of having non-character content from licensed games in Smash but labling them as "TOP SECRET" as a callback to the Goldeneye version of the Motion-Sensor Bomb

Ok, so I was gonna try and make some kind of joke here, but then it ended up with me realizing that Smash should totally include items based on retro merchandise, like classic Happy Meal toys or something like that.

I want to use the McDonald's Sonic 3 Promotion Tails as a missile weapon that only flies straight upward.
I really don't like the aged up human designs from ACNL and NH. So glad they didn't change Villager's design for Ultimate.

Is that not what nostalgia is? Liking older versions of a long-running franchise to varying degrees of bias?

Dude, isn't Sakurai adding too much Child/Teen/Young Adult VG characters in Smash?
They should put a character who is in 30's, 50's or Elder like Andross.

@GamerZardEX Nostalgia is feeling an attatchment to something you experienced a relatively long time ago. So for example, someone can like older Animal Crossing designs more than the newer ones even if they didn’t grow up with the series, and on the opposite side of things, someone could grow up with Sonic 06 and feel nostalgia for it but still acknowledge it’s a bad game.
If Waluigi got in Smash I'd want his playstyle to be a bit like a toned down Hero, RNG heavy but not outright anti-competitive or RNG-dependant - basically Waluigi has to adapt to and work with his own RNG rather than it just gifting him a win or loss when it feels like it. I've always loved the idea of taking that small chance of Peach pulling a Mr. Saturn/Bob-Omb/Beam Sword and making that the whole gimmick of a Waluigi move - using an item box to grab a relatively weak item like a Green Shell or Bumper
Rare Replay on Switch isn't necessary nor likely. It's a celebration of a Microsoft subsidary - no matter how important Rare's work with Nintendo was to them or the industry as a whole, they're an Xbox brand and their games are Xbox games by proxy, yes, even retroactively. That's not to say it can't or shouldn't get ported, but rather that it won't have any more priority than other low-profile MS titles and ports just because kids 20 years ago got emotionally attached to a golden toilet roll-shaped corporate logo at the beginning of a game - if not less due to it being a way for Microsoft to entice Switch owners over to Xbox.

The whole "Microsoft killed Rare!" thing is so weird... like, imagine if Dreamworks nabbed up Pixar and their IPs during the Circle 7 fallout - Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, Toy Story 3, Inside Out, Coco, Soul, all the iconic films they released since still came to be in the exact same form, bar a few hidden Mickeys being swapped for hidden Shreks, and the classic movies are still in circulation - but Disney fans are mad there isn't a castle logo at the beginning and they can't get lands for the classic films at Disneyland so they spread lies about the films and their production, make damning allegations about Dreamworks' treatment of Pixar's employees even, without even glancing at the facts - and those lies get so widely-circulated everyone takes them as the truth and thus those movies, despite being the same brilliance we've seen in our world, are widely mocked and criticised by people with no emotional attachment to early Pixar who should know better and haven't watched the films.
If the final Smash fighter doesn't show up this direct, (which is possible given Pytrha's direct specified Smash, this one didn't) £10 says it's an ActiBliz rep and got delayed.
I've been playing a lot of the big Smash stages lately and honestly they're not that bad once you know what to do - that doesn't mean they're well designed per say, but they aren't as painful as I once saw them as. The worst one is probably either New Pork or Gaur, but that's just because of how much empty space there is.
God I wish I could make a Mole Mania summoning ritual for haha internet points but there's only one piece of Mole Mania-related merchandise ever released - the game - and I don't even own that complete, just the cartridge with sun fading.
I don't play any games even semi-competitively, but I find competitive game design really interesting. I'd love to make a competitive game at some point.
It's surprising there aren't more companies trying to make competitive kart racers - there's certainly a market for them, just look at KartRider or - if Korea's too long a mental flight - CTGP Revolution.

The closest we've really got from a major studio is CTR, but the very poor online and the devs' refusal to balance out the engine classes made it dead on arrival despite shining potential.

Hmmm... as a competitive CTR player I don't think that even balancing the other engine classes besides speed would have made them competitively viable, considering that tech like u-turning make speed's biggest weakness practically null.

But I do wish they would have buffed the other engines a little to make them more fun casually. Like... drift has no reason to exist, you should have just improved the turn or balanced engine.

Another point you could have mentioned is that... the item balance is pretty bad too lol. Missiles track like ass and aren't fast enough sometimes to even matter. The clock appears once in like 10 races. Turbos are only useful for accelerating after being hit, otherwise a waste. The Super Engine is bugged and gives you practically infinite reserves. Blue Shields are OP and frontrunning with one is basically a free win. Bowling Bombs have an awkward tracking system that makes them miss 90% of the time, why can't they just go right where I'm facing? On top of everything there is no invincibility after being hit, so you could just get turbo squashed like 3 times after being hit with a Warp Orb and just jump from 1st to 6th out of your control.

The online is garbage though, agreed. But to say it killed the game on arrival isn't quite right despite its flaws. I played actively through all the GPs and the playerbase was always active, as well as the online communities organizing events and such. Compare to something like Team Sonic Racing which was just dead after a week or two. Not to mention that the most competitive part of all racing games, Time Trials, works like a charm, it's probably the most fun part of the game for me... kind of therapeutic actually.

With that said, I hope that if the game is rereleased on PC or a sequel comes along that these problems with the online and item/engine balance are addressed. Thank you for listening to my Ted talk.
Swan Lesson is a bit of a meme as "the most unfitting song in Smash", but I can kinda see what they were going for by including it - it makes a great BGM if you imagine the battle as an honourable duel between legendary warriors or something like that as opposed to a brutal deathmatch or a bunch of wacky characters having a violent party. If Smash Wii U had it on a stage like Coliseum or Bridge of Eldin rather than Duck Hunt I think more people would've interpreted it that way.
This may sound like a joke, but Waluigi in Fortnite would make a lot of sense. He's the only Mario character who really fits the Fortnite proportions, the Fortnite dances fit his personality perfectly, both are memetically divisive, and being a character with a bigger Western fandom than Japanese he'd fit well into Fortnite's American pop culture megacrossover.
I wrote a trophy description for if Melee teased WarioWare as well as Animal Crossing and Cubivore

    Jimmy T.
When fabulous disco star Jimmy T. isn't busting moves on the dance floor, he's developing Microgames: short and frantic minigames you have to clear within an increasingly short time frame. He may seem like an odd character, but that's nothing compared to his co-workers: a taxi-driving dog and cat; a centuries-old alien; and samurai toddlers are among the fresh new faces making wild games under their powerful boss, the one and only - actually, let's wait for the official release to say who!
