The third installment of the annual "Get On My Level" series is going down from May 20-22nd, and it’s already smashed attendance records to become the largest Canadian tournament ever, with 489 entrants for Smash 4 singles. Downtown Toronto will serve as the meeting ground as Canada looks to defend its territory from the top Smash 4 talent coming from all over the world. With GOML 2015 featuring an all-Ontario Winner’s Finals, the local warriors will be looking to make an impression once more as some bigger, badder wolves come to town.

This Saturday and Sunday, May 21st through the 22nd, giants will come to do battle in both Melee and Smash 4 at Get On My Level 2016. However, as they rumble across this Canadian arena, their smaller cousins, Smash 64 and Brawl, will have just as exciting fights. Brawl will have its largest event thus far in 2016 with over 60 registered combatants and rust crumbling off Brawl giants of old who have awoken to take on all challengers. For Smash 64 Canada, a powerhouse in the game, looks to defend its house against visitors not only from the United States but all the way from Europe. The streams and times can be seen below, but be sure to read on to meet the big names competing and the storylines that come with them.

By Marc "Shades" Elizalde

In just about a week, May 22 to be exact, the Philippines' Iloilo region will be having its latest tournament: Summertime Showdown. Happening at the SM City Mall, almost every local threat for both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Wii U are coming out; this includes a large amount of out-of-town guests.

Not only is the event going to be big, it's also going to be a pivotal point in the community's history in firsts, lasts and whatever may come in-between. Thanks to the collaboration of local businesses such as Concept Computer, Acclaim, Sarabia Manor Hotel and Hi-Gear, we're finally able to run an event of this scale.

For the first time in Philippine history, players from the former as well as the relatively new Cebu region will be travelling to Iloilo for this event. For others on...
Vayseth's Voyage: Japan's Love of Team Tournaments

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending my first Smash Brothers team tournament. It is not teams in the traditional sense; these teams tournaments run more like crew battles, only as a main event. Make no mistake, Japan loves their team tournaments. At KVOxTSB2016 there were many games that only had tournaments in a teams format. Maybe that is why they took the Genesis 3's Crew Battles so easily?

Couch Warriors Presents… Battle Arena Melbourne 8!

Battle Arena Melbourne 7 was the biggest Melee event in the Southern Hemisphere in 2015 and now it’s Smash for Wii U’s turn with BAM 8. Not only is this the first tournament for Smash 4 in Australia to host international visitors, but also, the biggest congregation of Australia’s talent to date is here. Featuring top players from every state, a second-to-none stream and over 400 combined entrants between Melee and Smash 4, the atmosphere is going to be nothing short of electric so missing this is a mistake. With BAM 8, Australian Smash in 2016 is kicking off in the biggest way imaginable.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Many people would look at BAM 8 as an opportunity for Australia to compete with internationals and to try and prove that they, as a nation, can match it with the best...

Ryu has never looked better. This episode's Top 5 Smash Shorts features a Pro Play by LOF's Acidtone and shows why Jigglypuff is the saddest character of the entire Smash cast.

What is a Smash Short? As the name suggests, it's a quick moment or series of events in Smash that is so good, you have to share it with someone. We're giving you (yes, you) the opportunity to share those moments for a chance to be selected as one of the Top 5.

Congratulations to the Winners!

[Source Gaming] Sakurai Discusses Fan Misconceptions

Masahiro Sakurai published his 505th Think About Video Games column in Famitsu today. He took a moment to discuss fans overreacting and even addressed some misconceptions within Smash. Source Gaming has the full column translated, but here are some select quotes.

Sakurai starts off the column by stating:

I suppose this cannot be helped, as people are only able to make judgments based on what they see and know for themselves. But on the internet, what people see can be rather limited, especially if they only look at things that interest them. I advise everyone not to get too heated up over every little thing they read.
After that warning he addresses the following misconceptions: Why are characters from his games seemingly overrepresented on the boxart, why certain characters are strong, why...

Vayseth's Voyage: KVOxTSB 2016 Review and Results

KVOxTSB 2016 was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had as a TO. I worked primarily with FGC TOs and streamers @Team Spooky and @St1ckBuG. The focus of the event was primarily on popular FGC titles but Smash was also included, similar to how the majority of major tournaments back in the United States are run now. One thing I noticed is there is very little dissension between the FGC and Smash communities here in Japan. It was extremely refreshing to see all these communities working together for each other to make the best event they could for everyone.
The Definitive List of Unused Fighters in Smash has Been Updated!
  • 13,234

Over a year ago, PushDustIn created the Definitive Unused Fighter List. The document took several days to compile, but it sorted characters into three categories -- considered, planned, and cut. While the post has been updated to include new information (such as Marth being considered for Super Smash Bros. 64) the post became very disorganized and cluttered. In addition, when the post was originally drafted, not all the sources were translated, which was inconvenient for non-Japanese speakers. Therefore, the Source Gaming team decided to update the list. This huge undertaking was led by Soma, the lead translator of Source Gaming.

The biggest change was the re-branding of the categories, and the addition of two new ones:
"Momentarily Considered, but Immediately Dismissed", "Seriously...
Editorial: A Smashing Debate, Part 4

Ever since the ol’ 64 times, Smash games have had a tendency to diminish its stock format from one installment to the next. Smash 64 had five stocks, Melee had four, Brawl had three and finally Smash 4 is ruled by a two stock regime.

However, a common topic of debate within the community is the possible change of this trend by sticking to a three stock system in Smash 4. This debate is somewhat…smashing; that’s why we brought it to the round table of the Smashing Debate!
