The Wild Ride: Melee Tiers Analysis

Between Super Smash Bros. 64 and Super Smash Bros. Melee there was a gap of barely two years, the smallest gap between two Smash games. Like Smash 64, Melee did not have balance patches, so any glitches weren’t repaired, like Luigi’s invisible ceiling glitch. With a bigger roster, Melee’s tier lists are one of the biggest showings of what a “wild ride” is.

When a character does not return for a new installment of Super Smash Bros., many of us feel sad or nostalgic; but few think about stages. Yes, a wide variety of stages either have been staples on the series, like Final Destination, or Battlefield; but some stages used in competitive play have not returned.

In 2008, when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released, a new figure in the roster appeared. No, it wasn’t a newcomer, but quite the opposite: it was the figure of absent characters. Despite bringing a whole bunch of newcomers, nobody could hide the fact that there were certain characters that were nowhere to be seen.

When Smash 4 released, however, another new figure appeared: the figure of a returning veteran, characters that did not appear in onegame but came back to duke it out once again. Only three such characters exist, namely, Dr. Mario, Mewtwo, and Roy, the last two being DLC.

Recently, a player under the name of Poopems started a streaming service called Master Hand Gaming.

Ever since the ol’ 64 times, Smash games have had a tendency to diminish its stock format from one installment to the next. Smash 64 had five stocks, Melee had four, Brawl had three and finally Smash 4 is ruled by a two stock regime.

However, a common topic of debate within the community is the possible change of this trend by sticking to a three stock system in Smash 4. This debate is somewhat…smashing; that’s why we brought it to the round table of the Smashing Debate!
