Earlier today, I was looking through Reddit and I stumbled upon a Smash subreddit in which someone was making a series of posts going into-depth about how every character in Ultimate was poorly designed in some way. (I won't be going into any further details than that, since I don't want to encourage witch-hunting.)
There was some stuff I agreed with and some that I didn't, but one particular idea that I kept seeing the user bring up fell so much into the latter category that I wanted to talk about it.
I kept seeing an argument for characters having more HUD-based specials and mechanics (Mario having a HUD-based Neutral Special for various power-ups and Villager having an inventory-based HUD, for example). I have to say, I hard disagree with giving more characters HUDs and similar gimmicks just for the sake of adding more references.
The reason Mario only having one Neutral Special projectile works is because he's designed to be a character meant to introduce newcomers to the gameplay of Smash. Once you give him a HUD which allows him to switch between power-ups, you strip that crucial element of his design away and take one easy-to-use character off the board (which is especially bad for Mario, since he's the character most Smash newbies will probably recognize first).
I'm all for adding in references to characters' movesets, but I am simply not a fan of further complicating characters just for the sake of that (heck, I think some characters in Ultimate suffer from this now, but that's another story). It feels like having references for the sake of references without giving regard to character design, archetypes, or cohesion.
With this status in particular, I wanna hear people's thoughts on this. Whether you agree or disagree with your points, it could be interesting to see how folks see this issue.
