That being said, I'm also absolutely agreed on the idea of recycling a character to really fit them into this new world they're in, though; it's a lot more work than just shoving them in with a cookie-cutter "dimensional portal" explanation, but it's so fun and special when it's done well.
...come to think of it, I'm a little surprised we haven't seen something loosely akin to Osamu Tezuka's "Star System" in the video game space, at least from some smaller devs. For context, Tezuka's Star System refers to the reoccuring characters he uses in his media, with characters tending to share a similar design and names between different works, despite being different characters in each narrative; like Shunsaku Ban or Acetylene Lamp.
(Closest thing that comes to mind would be the use of the Kunio-kun cast in River City Saga: Three Kingdoms, but that's specifically because that game's entire concept is centred around the Kunio-kun cast essentially playing the characters of the historical figures. Which, itself, I think is pretty cool. In fact, I think that kind of thing would be a really funny way to handle a Mushroom Kingdom Warriors if ever that happened.)
