Yeah, it's definitely punishable, but some characters might struggle more than others. I know Bowser was able to up-B out of shield no matter how far away I hit him, because the ridiculous amount of lag on her kicks.

Of course it's a popularity contest. But people tend to gravitate to the character they feel will net them the most wins. Zelda is a popular character outside of Smash. She is unpopular in Smash because she has a noted reputation for being bad.

Little Mac is legit great, even if his players tend to be awful.
Brawlers had Falcon and Lucario, two great characters as well. Of course gunners had Zamus so make of that what you will.

Also I have yet to see a single Peach in For Glory. It's super weird.
You don't even need to main the character you're contributing towards, you get pretty much
one shot per day (15 hours before you can contribute again). You can just use
the character once and go back to whoever you main.

I felt the need to mention it's a popularity contest because in the end, the results
mean nothing about the characters involved, other than how many people used them.

This COULD be a sneaky way of getting player feedback... but the results don't say enough.
You could be character that is just plain hard to win with (Zelda) or a character that is actually
really great but very difficult to use or get into (Rosalina).

Zelda's big issue atm is end lag. It is hard for her to do anything vs fast characters because they can attack all they want and Zelda suffers every time she tries to attack back because we constantly get punished due to end lag. This is the main reason I try to stick to doubles with Zelda because she can get away with a lot more in an environment where she is not the center of attention constantly. She is a great finisher and support character which is usually how I like to play.
  • All her aerials have a lot of end lag... even Nair which is pretty stupid.
  • Nayru's, Din's, Farore's, and Phantom all have noticeable end lag that makes them easily punishable.
  • Dash attack has noticeable end lag that is easily punished.
  • Smash attacks all have a pretty large amount of end lag but they are smash attacks so that is expected.
  • That gives us jab, down tilt, forward tilt, and up tilt... Not very many options for fast attacks. Forward tilt and up tilt still have a little bit of endlag but nothing compared to her other moves.
Overall she feels like a ranged Ganondorf so far in Smash 4. She has devastating attacks both ranged and up close but they suffer a lot of ending lag as a form of balance. This is a pretty bad formula for singles but it can work rather well in doubles. Sakurai said something about characters being balanced for different game modes and you can clearly see Zelda was not balanced to be a singles fighter lol. Don't get me wrong though, I have played her quite a bit in singles and she feels great but fast characters like Sonic and Greninja are so hard for Zelda to do anything against if the player is good.
FSmash has relatively little end lag, though sadly it makes up for that with its slow start-up. My current strategy pretty heavily revolves around fast poke (usually either jab or DTilt) into FSmash or FTilt.

I agree with your post about Phantom Slash though. It actually compliments her defensive play style pretty well if you ask me.

Notice the first sweetspot kick that hits shield; they slide pretty far! I'd say it'd be pretty hard to punish in that situation. Powershield/spotdodge will definitely f' you over though!

It only took 2 sweetspot kicks + Nayru's to break a shield if you think about it. I was pretty surprised, though Nayru's also seems to eat a ton of shield.
The slide only happens if the opponent has held up the shield for a while. Pretty much all Bairs I've tried on human/CPU grounded opponents didn't make them budge, since they were sharp enough to "power-shield" (is that still a thing?) in time.

And then BAM. They punish my Bair ending lag.

Dat Nayru going NOM NOM on dat shield tho.

Sooo, this was posted in the "Competitive character impressions" thread:

I'm fairly certain that Zelda, King Dedede, and Sonic will be within the top 7 when all is said and done.
Sweet zombie Jesus, I just bust a gut.

Whew, so far my score on AllisBrawl/Nintendodojo Ladder could be worse... it's certainly a challenge!

A lot of Marios and Greninjas, haha. @_@;

DDD's actually pretty good, has a nice Damage output and unlike Brawl, reliable kill setups.

But he lost chain grabs. That's certainly a bigger part of what made him good than any of the mixed blessing buffs he got.

The same guy that posted that about Zelda/D3 also says Rosalina is not in the top 7. Come on now.

Great news sisters!

1. (Some of you might have already known) Zelda's most useless AT from Brawl is back! Everybody do the Nayru Slide! (a.k.a. http://youtu.be/MEj3h-82esk?t=32s minus the nostalgic Evanescence song) :D

2. I found a way to cancel FW off the edges of Battlefield's platforms (quite) easily. Since FW doesn't go directly downwards & instead moves you to the direction that you are facing (-_-), you basically use the horizontal movement to do it. (I can't make gifs because I'm a computer pleb). To do it:
- Go to the centre of any platform
- Do a full jump then double jump towards the top
- Immediately after the DJ, do the Up-B directly downwards

You kinda need play around with the timings & everything. The higher you are, the closer you need to be the edge that you cancelling off from (though the distance you need to move is very slight).

Pls make a glorious gif of #2 pls

EDIT: In hindsight, I really should've posted this in the data thread... Soz

Not exactly understanding this. It looks like all you're saying is that, to put ourselves in a position where FW won't make us move horizontally, we have to jump near Zelda's fullest possible height (which is precisely the travel distance of FW's wind).

You haven't explained how to "cancel."

Dedede is a good character, Gordos zone incredibly well if you use them properly because they cant just be hit back esp on stages with platforms.

He also has a number of reliable combos nao

Upper mid, maybe high tier imo

When you reappear with FW at the very edge of a platform it's cancelled (something that was carried over from Brawl), like: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2014/15/1397372655-farore-ssb4.gif
But how FW works now, we can't go straight down onto the ground anymore since an airborne FW always has to go the full distance, so it adds some horizontal movement like: http://gfycat.com/ZestyDapperGalapagospenguin

But what I'm trying (& failing hard) to say is we can use this horizontal movement from going straight down to cancel FW on the ledge (at Zelda's highest point from jumping, she still moves very slightly horizontally when she aims FW downwards, which can be enough if you are pretty close to the edge).

I have no question D3 is still good. But like much of the cast looks so ridiculously strong.

I'll upgrade my position to eating a full fledged boot if D3 is in top 20.

Ugh, I'm so glad to be caught up on Zeldaboards now. Over my hour of scanning, anyone who put their friend codes in like the past four pages I added, my friend code is 3024 6545 1788, so add me back! c: As for the horizontal platform thing, I already knew about it xD It's happened a couple times, where on the reappearance I just barely touch the edge of the stage and slip off, and this is the same thing. It's hard to work with it, but I haven't messed with it on Battlefield, and that's where it would be put to use. And, just so I don't sound like I'm showing off, xD I'll add that a big thing I do all the time is down grab, follow up with Nair, and finish with a fair or dair if I can lead them of the edge, and that can lead to a stock gone for them xD This doesn't always work on more floaty chacharacters, but it works mot times then not. Is this like a scrub tactic that is easy to get out of or is this actually like a decent thing?

During SO many online For Glory matches:

Me: I think I will use my teleport to return to the stage. UP+B+Left
*In the middle of the sequence, a wild lag appears*
Lag: Oh, just Left+B? Okay!
Me: *Fatally uses Din's Fire for the nth time and SDs.*

Me: Dammit lag, no! That wasn't right!

Lag: Oh, I'm sorry, I'll get it right next time.

Me (a bit later): Okay, time to try this teleport thing again. Up+B+Some left or right direction
Lag: I got it this time. Just Up+B. STRAIGHT up.
Me: *Helplessly tumbles down to my death and/or am left open for a free hit.*

>:( >:( >:(

I figured someone here would know my pain. When the matches run smooth, it is so good. When the lag is bad, it is BAD.

D3 went from being zangeif to Rufus, and Zelda turned into a full fledged rose
I would -KILL- for a slow moving Din's Fire fireball projectile like Rose's Soul Spark to be honest.

EDIT: A bit of a Zelda realization I had: Jungle Japes is actually a great stage for her.

Not only do the side platforms protect her from speedier character shenanigans since it's disconnected from the main platform, but it also forces people to approach her in much more predictable way because you need to jump to get to her. For people with no projectiles (or good ones for that matter), you can basically throw Din's 'till the Cows come home. Even if you miss or if they dodge, the situation is either :

1. They are going to get knicked by a fire eventually, and that's gonna make them want to approach you because they're tired of the stalemate. This is most likely in your favor, since the only approach they can do is jumping onto the platform the engage you, which makes it much easier to anticipate their moves against you.

2. Even if they don't engage, there is going to be a point where they'll either give you enough spacing to make it safely onto the main platform to engage them instead, should you choose to.

So it's your advantage in either situation. She has enough tools and the stage advantage to deal with people that try to the reverse to her herself for the most part.

Also, because the stage has so many ledges you can get away with a lot of safe Farore teleport recoveries. You can either teleport to the one of the side ledges or you can even teleport to the main stage ledge because of how far her teleport goes.

Another plus would be gimping becomes extremely ridiculous in this stage, especially on the left side (since the current flows from right to left). Even if you sourspot, the rushing current basically will kill anyone that touches it really due to the super fast carrying it has (or a klaptrap if you're lucky). Not to mention for certain people with very vertical based recoveries, they won't be able to dip down too low because of the above, making it much easier to edgeguard them/punish them for over jumping the height.

Also Dsmash:

Need I say more? Okay, okay, that might have been a very lucky one I got there, but still!

This is a very good example of how the current really work in your favor when you're on the offensive. The speed of it is really not to be under estimated.

This is all still early conjecture, but I would like to explore this stage more with her. I really think it would be a pretty great counter pick against certain characters or even just an overall good stage for her in general. Hopefully I'm not too over my head on this, haha.

In other news, I got my very first Phantom Slash kill. I was quite surprised by it's strength:

For once, the Phantom came through for me! Praise to the Down B God.

I give it a lot of flack, but perhaps I should think of incorporating it more into my game now that I'm getting a bit more comfortable controlling Zelda nowadays.

See, I wouldn't mind the lag conspiring against Zelda, if the circle pad didn't do the same thing.

Me: *somewhere in the air*
Opponent: *starts charging a smash or a laggy projectile*
Me: Mate, you really don't wanna do that when Zelda can just teleport into you for the kill...
*goes for the up-B punish*

...

*re-appears off stage*

Phantom feels so satisfying with kills like this, or when you block someone from grabbing the edge. I think my favorite moment was when I tossed it out right when a Little Mac tried landing his KO on me; completely whiffed and hit the Phantom XD

Yup, that too. But less often these days. Even rarer, and more annoying yet, is the accidental Din's Fire off stage somehow when you began with both feet on the ground...

That Japanese tier list is pretty interesting....Not in a good way. (but hey, Zelda just escaped bottom 10 there)

This is the one where they solely used tourney results, I assume.

I don't really trust that tier list. I don't think it's official and several rankings look off (from what I've read on the forums).
Any tier list at this time doesn't mean much anyway.

Well there's never really an "official" tier list.

This is Japanese tier list version 14.9, so they've had plenty of revisions already. I have a hard time believing Shulk and Samus are that low (and Bowser that high) but they have a very different meta than us already, I guess.

I honestly just can't see zelda as low tier again and I think that lucina zelda and jigglypuff should be higher on then tier list because it's hard for me to believe that bowser is that high

Is it wrong that I grab too much with Zelda?
Well....it is if you whiff it a lot. Her grab has decent range (even better with the RC pivot) but it is slow and laggy. Her throws also do a decent bit of damage (except dthrow) and uthrow and dthrow have potential followups and kill setups.

So basically, if you can land the grabs, use them. But try not to whiff, since you're left wide open.

Just realized that that advice can go for pretty much any character. Oh well, I tried.

Soz
I wonder who that noob is who posted that video. Seems like such a waste of time to post, not only a useless 'AT', but something to try and help the Zelda community. I mean, why bother posting anything tbh? We should automatically know what will work and what won't right away.

As for FW canceling, I'm probably not going to bother with that too much on the 3DS controls. With the Wii U version however, and the Gamecube controller at my disposal, there will be a lot more room for AT's, especially ones involved with Zelda's recovery.

Mocha sis it's been too long! :D
Nayru Slide thingy was pretty icky in Brawl, especially since NL was a pretty mediocre move. However, I do find that this would be a lot more fun to use now considering how NL "feels" more usable (it's hard to explain, but there's just something about it makes it feel much more satisfactory to use now even if it still isn't all that good nor too much different).
