People should post more VGM.
or maybe you should get some culture instead.

just kidding.

not really though. why not listen to some "real music" instead

but here's some of my favorite video game music.

Majora's Mask "Astral Observatory" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0krxH0dWhU is one of the most calming and meditative and dreamy songs from this series. It's very overlooked in my experience but it's just about my favorite thing ever. Simple and clean.

and hey on that note Utada Hikaru "Simple and Clean" from Kingdom Hearts is just a wonderful song. I wish more J-pop sounded like this song. I like both versions, probably prefer the slower one at the ending though. the lyrics are completely silly but hey. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZleBengRYvI

Final Fantasy:

Prelude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUs_6-d5T3g

Matoya's Cavern (FF1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9_basa73jw

Main Theme (FF1): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glz2S-qWBZ8 I love this vocal version from this fantastic album.

Eyes on Me (FF8): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNefNLOHVYk if you haven't realized by now, I have a thing for female vocal ballads.

Man with the Machine Gun (FF8): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jho-peCAKs its just badass and reminds me of Beverly Hills Cop

Aeris' Theme (FF7): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIqKWLkm2-g not much to say about this classic.

Anxious Heart (FF7): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMvHTlWyxH0 eerie, uneasy and mournful.

Silent Hill 1-4 are my favorite video game soundtracks of all time

Main Theme (SH1): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EN-_1OGtUY mandolins

Laura's Theme (SH2): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LB7LZZGpkw my favorite VG theme ever

Betrayal (SH2): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoCG__IL4yA DOOOOOM GLOOOOOM

Forest (SH2): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLq9DnkZHfU love the piano lines in this. very atmospheric and relaxing.

End of Small Sanctuary (SH3): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_e8abf_Tds another really chill and warm vibes song. this is a great reprieve after some of the more horrifying parts of the game.

Float Up From Dream (SH3): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_JhEhC7AI0 creepy muffled synthpads.

Fever Chill (SH4) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z8eik-IzD4 this song is just plain ****ing dope. it's a chill trip-hop beat, makes me wanna drink Robitussin and sit in a corner with red lights on

Room of Angel (SH4): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4rXbSnk2ng another girl ballad, but this one is quite creepy while also being really beautiful at the same time. lyrics are cheesy but it doesn't hurt the music.

It's difficult to find compatibility with people's music tastes here. At least for me.

VGM is a reliably good bet on a Smash Bros forum.

Why don't you just play Majora's Mask?

That's what every post I ever make boils down to anyway.

Play that game dammit.

there's been a gigantic breadth and variety of stuff posted in here. if you can't find a single thing posted in here that you like I'm afraid that you have some very restrictive taste! trying new things is fun and builds character.

but heck, if all you wanna do is listen to VGM then that's cool too

either way, play Majora's Mask. love it. live it. breathe it.

I love VGM music actually, it bugs me how much slack it gets... for music that plays repetitively, it does an extremely good job of keeping the person liking it for so long.

By comparison, look how hated rick-rolling is.

But the game I love most for it's music pieces is Terranigma for sure. Everything about that game is incredible. <3

I think VGMusic was fantastic until the current generation.

Or is it last generation now that Wii U is out?

Doesn't matter Wii U isn't worth caring about yet.

Most of my music 'gems' are NES, SNES or 64 - type tracks however I do like some i've seen recently. Some from DKCR were really great and I enjoyed NSMB's first level theme (the one that's also in Brawl) as well as some from Galaxy. Gen 5 pokemon had some nice tunes and I also enjoyed quite a few of Super Paper mario songs. There are also a few from more minor series that I like. :)

Every song on Com Truise's Galactic Melt album (mostly VHS Sex, Air Cal, Flightwave, Glawio, and Hyperlips).

Game songs I'm been listening to the Taiyo High School theme from Rival Schools and Katamaritaino from the Katamari Damacy soundtrack.

I'll update post with links in a few.

VGM are songs too. What qualifies as a real song exactly?

Actually they aren't (well unless they are actually sung).

A song is a musical form, specifically it is a musical form involving the human voice.

Music without a singing voice is called a piece, although there are all sorts of different specific form but piece encompasses all that aren't songs.

It's a little pedantic to state but I think people would benefit from knowing the distinction.

omg, Charlie Mingus. That's who got me into jazz, and it was specifically Moanin to do it. Not sure how that works, since he's not really as accessible as some other musicians of that era.

Haitian Fight Song is my fav because the gnarly bassline

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-GFi66qwK0

also Freedom because I like the words and the style of singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23sah6aWk3A

most importantly, Charlie Mingus wrote an educational pamphlet on how to train your cat to use the toilet

Who here doesn't like techno or trance or that kind of songs?

:phone:
depends on what you're talking about. I like most breakbeat, french house (daft punk was my first concert), IDM, psy-trance, original dubstep, downtempo/chillwave, ambient, 90s/00s trance

i hate whatever this is considered:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Zj00MbeeM

and lots of other similar super up-tempo garbage like most happy hardcore and gabber

i hate most modern "dubstep". skrillex and all the other imitators is gimmicky garbage music that is only enjoyable for me at a concert/club. i like this skrillex song, and wish he would make more music in this vein. idk what genre this is considered but it's lovely

I think it's interesting. I was a huge fan of Sonny when he was in From First To Last and then he left the band and started doing his own thing under the name "Sonny." I'm terrible with genres so I can't discern what he was doing but it certainly wasn't what he does now under the name Skrillex.

An example of what he was doing under the name "Sonny": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRXDNs31rDQ

I miss that sort of stuff so much.

Here's another example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bTznw71nQ0

When I first heard that ^, my chest sank. I was absolutely thrown away on how good the song was.

Then Sonny started doing stuff under the name Skrillex and I think Sonny himself made notice that "Sonny" and "Skrillex" both simultaneously exist to keep the music styles separate. Unfortunately, Skrillex overshadowed "Sonny" =/

I think Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites is the last album I've liked from Sonny.

EDIT: I actually have a hoodie that says "Sonny" with a pretty nice design when he was making music under that name and I also have a Skrillex shirt he was selling when he was starting out as Skrillex. I'm afraid of wearing that shirt out in public and getting called a ****** or something :|

Okay, that's enough VGM. Can we get back to real songs now? Nothing against good VGM though.
Lol it was like a page out of 5. :p

But on that subject, I think metal is mis-understood. It's an acquired taste, for sure but after about a year of listening to my brother listen to it, i've come to realise how truly valid and often beautiful it can be. Be aware I prefer some types of metal over others. Some ARE just grouchy voices that can't be heard. But not all metal like that.

Also to combine the two topics, some metal bands have done VGM covers hehe. :-)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Skrillex is brostep. And dubstep would be along the lines of Distance and Clubroot?

I don't like Skrillex (maybe 3 songs at best).

*high-five for MBV, Godspeed, and Swans and the only good Opeth*

I'm not that crazy on East Hastings though, compared to some of GSYBE's other songs.

One of my favorite songs of all time is "moya". seriously flawless song.

or my bad, it's a flawless piece.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vRrGCVlMHk

few things will ever compare to the first time I heard the build and climax of Moya.

I also like "sleep" a lot, especially this section, another one of my very favorite musical passages

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vRrGCVlMHk the drums <3, the strings <3 the guitar screeching <3
