*high-five for MBV, Godspeed, and Swans and the only good Opeth*

I'm not that crazy on East Hastings though, compared to some of GSYBE's other songs.

One of my favorite songs of all time is "moya". seriously flawless song.

or my bad, it's a flawless piece.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vRrGCVlMHk

few things will ever compare to the first time I heard the build and climax of Moya.

I also like "sleep" a lot, especially this section, another one of my very favorite musical passages

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vRrGCVlMHk the drums <3, the strings <3 the guitar screeching <3

I never really listened to moya, mostly because I love BBF3, so that probably overshadowed it a bit (WIth it's awesome climax and the field recordings. The part where he starts yelling at the judge sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.)

Ever heard of Do Make Say Think? They remind me of GY!BE, in a good way.

Some current favorites of mine.

[COLLAPSE="Current Favorite Music"]sasukeshika - Past is Prologue (VGM remix)
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Camel - Supertwister
Maynard Ferguson - St. Thomas (Live) (the Maynard & trombone solo beginning at 3:23 is amazing)
Asmorod - Act IV: In Sathanas Veritas (love the guitar sound especially)
Vince Guaraldi Trio - O Tannenbaum (it isn't Christmas yet, but this is the music I'll be listening to when it comes)
Gothmog - Follow Me...
The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
Summoning - Land of the Dead
Rush - Xanadu
Howard Shore - The Ring Goes South (pumped for The Hobbit)[/COLLAPSE]
I see you still like What's Past is Prologue. I was going to put it up in my list, but I decided to put something more upbeat sounding.

You have a lot of awesome songs to hear if this means you are new to the band :) . It upsets me greatly that they haven't made an album since 2009 and haven't done a US tour since like 2008 lol

I had a lot of fun listening to them for a while... their music is kooky (in fact it's been described as 'nintendo-core'), cool and fun and I enjoyed songs like face of bear, kangarooster meadows for fun and crickets (especially when the pipes come in) for a really nice melody. :)

What?! Smashboards has good taste in music! Seven Idiots is one of my favorite albums of all time, and Hurtbreak Wonderland is up there too. Going through the rest of the thread... Swans, Beefheart, Kayo Dot, GY!BE, mOTW, Crystal Castles, Rolo Tomassi, Lantlos, King Crimson, My Bloody Valentine.... subscribing to this thread for sure. What a pleasant surprise :)!

Swans-The Seer. More accurately, the album "The Seer" as a whole. AOTY so far, for me.

Giles Corey-No One Is Ever Going to Want Me. A friend recently recommended me the Giles Corey self-titled EP and I can't stop listening to it. It's a real melancholic EP that's tough to pin down in a genre, but it's absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend this track in particular. If you're going to listen to it, you have to listen all the way.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor-Mladic. I really enjoyed Godspeed's new release. Not sure what else to say, but I've been listening to it loads. While we're talking about GY!BE I might as well namedrop Sleep so people that aren't familiar with Godspeed can fall in love.

Sunno)))-Alice. Sunno))) finally clicked for me. And I'm so glad they did. If you aren't familiar with them, they play very slow drone music which will probably come off as boring and pretentious. If you stick with them though? They're very rewarding.

Slint-Good Morning, Captain. Man, I love Slint.

Been getting back into The Dillinger Escape Plan as well. Mathcore is so cool.

I've also been listening to a bunch of Crystal Castles and Death Grips because of all their new releases (although I wasn't the biggest fan of CC III, it got me to spend some more time with I and II, which I enjoy quite a bit). Converge's All We Love We Leave Behind was fantastic too.

edit: I sort of want to gush about how awesome World's End Girlfriend is a bit more because I don't know anyone else who likes them. Seven Idiots is such a phenomenal album. I've never listened to something which can just totally take control of your emotions, from euphoric highs to the ravaging nothingness of "The Offering Inferno". It's constructed so well, and the catharsis you get from listening to it all the way through... man. Hurtbreak Wonderland took me a bit longer to understand, because I had heard Seven Idiots first and wasn't expecting it. To me, HBW is a real introspective album that explores with magical realism the idea of solitude, in all its forms. It's a good companion. Maeda is a genius.

I probably shouldn't have linked the track "The Seer" as your introduction to Swans, haha. It's a 32 minute largely instrumental piece that starts off with a blaring four minute drone segment. Welp :yeahboi:

Off The Seer you might enjoy Lunacy, Song for a Warrior, or Mother of the World.

On a larger scale, good entrance albums to the quite extensive Swans catalogue are Soundtracks for the Blind or Children of God. The band has been around for awhile and has released 30 odd albums that wildly differ in genre. Their earlier music is some of the most violently intense stuff ever recorded (and yes, I really mean that), but they step away from that in favor of... just about everything else on their later releases.

edit: Love your avatar, Tangled was the cutest movie ever.

The title track is the weakest part of The Seer, for me. I think "The Seer Returns", "The Apostate", "Mother of the World" and "Avatar" are the highpoints. The best thing about The Seer is that it made me go back and listen to everything Swans that I could because I'd never heard them before that. I heard their names and lumped them in with (of all things) shoegaze/dream bands like Cocteau Twins and Slowdive because of the band name. I was not expecting the intense super negativity of their music. The first few albums make The Seer sound and feel like Thriller in comparison. If The Seer was too out there or stressful for you, I don't think you are going to have much luck with their earlier work.

World's End Girlfriend is definitely one of my all-time favorite music projects. It is so much bigger and more ambitious than most "post-rock" bands that he is lumped in with. I can't praise him enough.

Converge's ALL WE LOVE WE LEAVE BEHIND is a ridiculously good album that has grown on me like crazy in the past few weeks. One of the strongest albums from one of the the greatest bands ever. This album is a great introduction to mathcore or even just heavy music in general.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrcY9I-BbjM Converge "Aimless Arrow"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyJz_V9jnlM "All We Love We Leave Behind"

As far as 2012 mathcore goes, I preferred Rolo Tomassi's Astraea. A big part of that is because of lyrical content, the clean vocal melodies, and the synthesizer-centric sound of Rolo Tomassi just inherently speaks to me more.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD1G4n5n2IE Rolo Tomassi "Ex Luna Scientia"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VynfFh4Qla4 "Illuminare"

I can't get anyone into this band the way I am so I'm always happy to see someone who appreciates them.

Nice!

I definitely liked those three songs you linked me, Construct. Especially Song for a Warrior.

(You can thank a member of the Disco Room for this Rapunzel avvy, btw. xD It's hers and hers alone, and I just kinda jacked it as a running gag back there. I'm gonna replace it soon.

Tangled was pretty cute. Not my favorite Disney flick, but definitely one of the better ones.)

Edit: What exactly is "mathcore," guys? If you don't mind my asking.

Edit 2: Oh, those drums in Converge's All We Love We Leave Behind. Goooooooooooooooddaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

mathcore is a subgenre of hardcore and metal that is generally defined by a lot of odd rhythms and times, rapid time signature and tempo changes and other general musical weirdness. For a simple comparison

http://youtu.be/312Sb-2PovA this is Suicide Silence. it's pretty standard generic metalcore (which is just another variation of hardcore and metal). Most of the song plays out with the same rhythm and time signature the whole time. You can steadily bob your head the same way to basically the whole song, and all the accents of the music are generally in the same spots.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1i2Z4uVC5o this is The Number Twelve Looks Like You. this is a bit different than that metalcore song isn't it? Try bobbing your head in the same rhythm and pattern to this entire song.

so yeah, that's pretty much the basis for the distinction of math-. there are actually a whole lot of bands that incorporate mathcore elements into their music. it's not so uncommon as it was in the days of Number Twelve and when Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan first started...

another cross-example

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NTyyCwwDfY Comeback Kid, hardcore

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huEq1WB_YVE Psyopus, mathcore

there is also math-rock, which is the same concept but applied to rock music. lots of cool stuff there and a little more accessible than -core.

http://youtu.be/iAfKeHjkYSU Para-medics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0nv3byRI_s Tera Melos

Holy crap. There's a huge difference. There's so much stuff going on instrumentally in the "math-" songs. It's hard for me to keep up. Lol. I'm digging it, though.

Thanks for that, LT.

Come to think of it, this blog reminds me of my failed thread, "What song are you listening to right now".

Huh.

And I know it's off topic but... i've seen like 3 different people with the same tangled avatar...

To stay vaguely near the current topic, here are some other recommendations/songs/what-have-you:

Gastr Del Sol:
Eight Corners
Black Horse
The Relay
Rebecca Sylvester
The Sea Incertain
Bauchredner

It can be hard to find Gastr Del Sol albums, which is a shame considering how good they were.

Rodan:
Bible Silver Corner
Jungle Jim

Rodan was a neat band in some ways similar Slint, although the comparisons only hold so much weight. I think Slint was notably better overall, but Rodan is still interesting to listen to.

I also highly recommend the first three Tortoise albums (especially TNT); they might be my favorite band from the 90s and I'd feel weird posting just a few of their songs out of the context of their albums.

And since people were talking about GY!BE, I'll randomly plug one of my favorite A Silver Mount Zion songs:

13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed

Word. They're also heavy as ****.

Also, I liked the title track of the seer. The way the into builds tension, the heavy middle part, and the bizarre outro are all crazy awesome.

Also, Fly, i've been wanting to get into tortoise for a while now. Do you have any good songs that I should start with?

Yep, I still do. Thanks for linking to it before.

I got the song a year ago, but it's a "recent favorite" because I didn't listen to it at all between November last year and November this year. Other parts of my iTunes library took my focus.

I really enjoyed the first two thirds or so of The Seer (song). The build-up segueing out of the blaring intro into Gira's unsettling "I see it all I see it all I see it all I see it all" was fantastically done. In the latter part of the song it just seems to beat a dead [droning, instrumental] horse.

I didn't even know Rolo Tomassi released a new album this year! Going to have to pick that up asap. Mathcore is what originally got me out of being one of those "I only listen to metal because I'm so br00tal" phases and into appreciating more of music as a whole, so Rolo Tomassi will always have a special place in my heart.

If you're liking math rock, check out About Tess. They're a Japanese math rock outfit... off the same label as WEG! So that's pretty neat. They also have two drummers at once, which is nifty.

All We Love We Leave Behind is another strong contender for AOTY. Converge is such an overwhelmingly consistent band. Although, the one thing that keeps nagging me about the album is their choice of putting Predatory Glow as the outro track. It just seems out of place. I LOVED how Converge ended Axe to Fall- with Cruel Bloom and Wretched World. On that note, do you know any musical outfits which play music similar to Cruel Bloom? I love that song so, so much, and I don't know where to find more like it.

I never bothered to go through the Silver Mt. Zion discography, but I think I might now. I really liked that track, Fly.

You guys are linking early Swans and didn't grab something off PCIAGI? C'mon!

edit: Oh wow, that Gastr Del Sol stuff that Fly linked? Wow. Never even heard of them before, thanks a bunch!

more edits: Rodan is fantastic as well. I have a lot of listening to do :p

Other stuff I recommend/My favorite songs now.

Cloudkicker is some awesome Post-Rock/Post-Metal (as in heavy Post-Rock). He also gives out all of his music for free, so that's pretty cool.

Giant Squid. Really cool post-metal stuff (in the other sense). Kinda sludgy with middle eastern influences. Really atmospheric too.

Digging Cloudkicker, DH.

Giant Squid is almost...funky. In a good way, though. Especially that first track (Panthalessa).

@ Jam: STAHP! Lauryn Hill and Mint Condition...killing me with...nineties...!

I LOVE GIANT SQUID. The Ichthyologist is one of my favorite albums.
Will add more to this post once I listen through Jam's post, just had to shout about how awesome giant squid is first. So cool seeing people talking about bands that nobody I know knows of :)

Dark Horse, have you given Grayceon a listen? They're Jackie (cello and female vocals from Giant Squid)'s side project. Pretty darn cool.

I miss Lauryn Hill. The Miseducation Of-... is a nearly flawless album. don't avoid it because of "the 90s" whatever that means.

I also still play R,Kellys Chocolate Factory on a regular basis.

I wasn't sure, just had to be cautious : P

but yeah, speaking of RnB, my favorite favorite group is probably Isley Bros. Pure panty dropper music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh6lGI1bOkw "Voyage to Atlantis"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glhdcJ7K3XM "Between the Sheets"

of course Al Green must be mentioned

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVzYxqG9N1c "Let's Stay Together"

and Isaac Hayes (kinda heading into rock/funk territory here)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqR4CZj0mJQ "Walk on By"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdgRMFlxTJk "Hung up on My Baby" LISTEN TO THIS SONG. it's an incredibly smooth and sexy instrumental that has some phenomenal guitarwork

and some Motown/Philly Love with The Three Degrees

http://youtu.be/Vj53iyFok8g "When Will I See You Again?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPca0MDdIeg "The Runner"

The Delfonics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBSERoY2HS8 "Hey Love"

http://youtu.be/Vu9LLoe5KVM "Somebody Loves You"

lol, before I posted I was like "man i don't really think i can talk much about RnB" but apparently I like it quite a bit

I'd just sit down and listen to all of TNT first. Here are all of the tracks from that in order:

TNT
Swung from the Gutters
Ten-Day Interval
I Set my Face to the Hillside
The Equator
A Simple Way to Go Faster Than Light That Does Not Work
The Suspension Bridge at Iguazú Falls
Four-Day Interval
In Sarah, Mencken, Christ, and Beethoven There Were Women and Men
Almost Always is Nearly Enough
Jetty
Everglade

If you like that, I'd then look into Millions Now Living Will Never Die, which I don't think is as uniformly strong as TNT, but is still solid overall. A few tracks from that album:

Djed
The Taut and Tame
Glass Museum
Along the Banks of Rivers
Restless Waters

this song is mediocre but the end guitar solo makes me soulgasm. John Frusciante is probably my favorite guitarist and one of my favorite musicians and I'm happy he left dadrock Chili Peppers behind.

http://youtu.be/CWNDW5KtiKk?t=4m23s RHCP "Wet Sand"

one of my favorite JF songs "Ramparts" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zynHtLeotww perfect instrumental, says so much in just over 1 minute.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeLdyrXv0FQ "Unreachable" wonderful song with a super nice instrumental ending.

I love Lil B as a funny comedic rapper, but it makes me sad that most people see him as JUST a joke. I love Lil B more than most people because he is so completely sincere and genuine, even when he's goofing off and making satirical tracks. Basedprint 2 is my favorite from the dozens of mixtapes he released this year because there aren't many throwaway gimmick tracks like Wonton Soup or Paris Hilton etc. and he actually says a lot of insightful ****.

edit: Dark Horse, what'd you think of Autotheism? I kinda hated it and the general consensus seems to be harshly divided between love it/hate it.

I'm going to confess, I only skimmed over listening to it. What I noticed though, was that it did a good job of ruining itself. Take "emancipate" (I'm pretty sure that was the track.) It starts off kind of cool, but then crying babies. And unlike other music I listen to with crying babies, all I was thinking was "was that really necessary?" I should also mention that I didn't hate the clean vocals as much as everyone else did.

Also, I've never been able to get into the faceless for some reason.
