What?! Smashboards has good taste in music! Seven Idiots is one of my favorite albums of all time, and Hurtbreak Wonderland is up there too. Going through the rest of the thread... Swans, Beefheart, Kayo Dot, GY!BE, mOTW, Crystal Castles, Rolo Tomassi, Lantlos, King Crimson, My Bloody Valentine.... subscribing to this thread for sure. What a pleasant surprise
!
Swans-
The Seer. More accurately, the album "The Seer" as a whole. AOTY so far, for me.
Giles Corey-
No One Is Ever Going to Want Me. A friend recently recommended me the Giles Corey self-titled EP and I can't stop listening to it. It's a real melancholic EP that's tough to pin down in a genre, but it's absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend this track in particular. If you're going to listen to it, you have to listen all the way.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor-
Mladic. I really enjoyed Godspeed's new release. Not sure what else to say, but I've been listening to it loads. While we're talking about GY!BE I might as well namedrop
Sleep so people that aren't familiar with Godspeed can fall in love.
Sunno)))-
Alice. Sunno))) finally clicked for me. And I'm so glad they did. If you aren't familiar with them, they play very slow drone music which will probably come off as boring and pretentious. If you stick with them though? They're very rewarding.
Slint-
Good Morning, Captain. Man, I love Slint.
Been getting back into
The Dillinger Escape Plan as well. Mathcore is so cool.
I've also been listening to a bunch of Crystal Castles and Death Grips because of all their new releases (although I wasn't the biggest fan of CC III, it got me to spend some more time with I and II, which I enjoy quite a bit). Converge's All We Love We Leave Behind was fantastic too.
edit: I sort of want to gush about how awesome World's End Girlfriend is a bit more because I don't know anyone else who likes them. Seven Idiots is such a phenomenal album. I've never listened to something which can just totally take control of your emotions, from euphoric highs to the ravaging nothingness of "The Offering Inferno". It's constructed so well, and the catharsis you get from listening to it all the way through... man. Hurtbreak Wonderland took me a bit longer to understand, because I had heard Seven Idiots first and wasn't expecting it. To me, HBW is a real introspective album that explores with magical realism the idea of solitude, in all its forms. It's a good companion. Maeda is a genius.
