Big crunch is when the universe expands, but stops and collapses in on itself. Things get hotter, and soon, all of time and space is condense into a infinitely small point.
Scientists typically agree that the second option will become true, the universe keeps expanding, and speeding up in it's expansion. Due to the second law of thermodynamics (which states that everything has a rate of decay), stars die out and we hit the degenerate era, where everything is pitch black, and only white dwarfs and black holes remain. However, even decay affects matter, and eventually the atom falls apart. After the loss of all matter (where we are only left with subatomic particles), only black holes are a distinguishable structure in the universe, hence the name Black hole era. However, even decay hits black holes, and without matter to consume, they explode into more subatomic particles. Once all the black holes blow up, the universe enters the dark era, where the universe is technically dead.
