The Burj Dubai

Construction began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009

818m tall

100km (60 miles) - the distance the Burj Dubai will be visible from

76th floor - world's highest swimming pool

124 floor - world's highest observation deck.

158th floor - world's highest mosque

22million man hours spent building the structure

8 million cubic feet of concrete used to build it.

Cost $1.5 billion

Human Rights Groups claim it was built by Indian and Pakistani construction workers paid as little as $5 a day.

Apparently takes 6 months to clean all the windows.

Read in the paper today that the interior is still being worked on.

Exclusive apartments and a luxury hotel designed by Giorgio Armani are still being decorated while the 37 floors of offices are not ready for occupation.

However, that may not matter since almost none of the corporate space has been let as the desert emirate struggles to cope with an equally huge financial crash.

Tried checking the official site, mad slow, must be alot of traffic.

Watching the opening ceremony now. They had fireworks and all that from neighbouring buildings. The fireworks were miniscule compared to the building. Gave an idea of the scale.

What an amazing feat of technology and architecture!

I have seen this colossus in progress about a year ago, but I haven't been to Dubai since.
Well, this is what comes from the "Playground for the Rich".
I also hear that Dubai is developing Hydropolis, an underwater hotel:

Dynamic Building, a building with different rotating floors:

And quite a variety of different architectural feats.

Wow, imagine the view from the top, you can probably see for about a hundred miles. I also wonder how much an apartment woud cost in that skyscraper O_O.

Hope I can go to Dubai again and see that skyscraper, and that's saying a lot, cuz I dislike flying, because of MANY reasons!

It's too bad that the whole country is going to be a wasteland in 15 years time.

The whole place is an absolute waste of money.

I don't care how useless that city is, I totally wanna go.

It has the only 7 star hotel in the world. If only I had enough money to blow on absolute luxury.

I'm so used to how poor I am, I don't think I'd be able to put half of anything they can offer to use. Even if it was given for free.

Yeah. I honestly see no appeal in such excessive luxury. I'm already living in luxury in comparison to more than half the world and I always have bursts of guilt.

If I were ever went to Dubai, I would not be able to bring myself into having a good time, much less bringing myself to look in the mirror.

Hmmm heard about that on the news, but for some reason I thought it would be completed in 2014... anyways would anyone know the height of the twin towers compared to this building?

Quick fact, it's now called the Burj Khalifa due to Abu Dhabi bailing Dubai out from it's financial crisis.

Khalifa is in honour of Abu Dhabi's Sheik.
No, not the Sheik you're probably thinking of.

This tower is at least twice as tall as the twin towers if what I'm lead to believe is true.

What I don't understand is HOW people can live with themselves by spending so much money. Don't they feel dirty at all? Don't they feel the scortching blood on their palms?
