WHAT IS THIS PLACE
Most people prefer singles over doubles, and some people are not able to get to the venue in time for the start of the tournament, so they do doubles first, so the people that cannot get there in time, are still in time for singles...

Atleast, thats why I think it´s like that.

Probably for both the stated reasons. They're smaller and faster, and it gives more time for people to get there to play singles.

Nowadays...at least for Melee, (I think Brawl doubles is really popular, too) people are preferring to do doubles more often. Get a person with the wrong teammate and suddenly it's not an obvious win.

Anyway:

Doubles tournaments DO tend to run faster. Also...singles, like any sport (where there are both) is the main event. Think of it like Tennis, the doubles are usually held first. Singles is the main event.

Probably because Doubles is like a warm up for Singles because when it gets later everyone is at their best.

It's just a matter of importance.

It is so you have a chance to get pissed at your doubles partner before you play him in singles, making a better match =p

The only time doubles are really exciting is when you have a fox and captain falcon, getting grab released into usmashes, then getting knee'd.

In other words, watching doubles can be really, really boring.

IMO because Singles Grand Finals is sort of like the "Main Event" of the night. and as such it should be the last thing that happens

unfortunately people prefer singles. a lot of times, if you have singles first, people will just leave and not stay for doubles. if you have doubles first, you can catch some of the people waiting around for singles.

It's a TO scheme to get the most competitors possible in all events.

If a certain team loses doubles, they can blame their partner (even if they don't say anything about it, it may dwell in their mind that that's what happened) and decide to truly represent in Singles.

Which leaves them one of two opportunities, to rise to the occasion and win, or fail miserably, knowing it was not only their partner's fault, but theirs as well.

It's been done in team games foreverrrrrr.

i believe its for the warmup. You don't want people making excuses that they were tired or anything. so to start things off you have a doubles tournament as a warmup because no one really cares that you win doubles.

I have to say more like a warm up and propaganda for the TOs. If someone is doing doubles, and they see that the other teams are also doing singles and their good, that someone will most likely consider to do singles.

the real reasons are

warmup for what most people consider the main event

and more people usually enter singles than doubles so singles being later gives more people time to get there from whatever other obligations they have

This so much.

Most people value singles higher than doubles but still like doubles, but some people just flat out don't like doubles that much. At any rate, more people usually enter singles than doubles, but can't always be at the venue at like 11:00 A.M. because they may be traveling OoS, so they put doubles first and singles later.
