Hello, welcome to hell! The Link Boards!

Hope you don't mind, I only reviewed one match, but I hope I help you nonetheless.

0:34 - What was the nair for? He's out of range and can reach you.

0:36 - Here would have been a prime moment to Jab Cancel Grab him. Unless you're fighting a Fox, Falco, or Falcon, you shouldn't ever go for jab 3. The aforementioned three can land before you can follow up.

0:38 - You really shouldn't go in after a blocked boomerang, it worked here, but Ike could have faired you from where he was before you came in.

0:43 - Again, pointless nair. Perhaps do a full empty hop to bait an airdodge next time. Then you can get a free bair or something.

0:46 - Terrible place to use Bow. Ike was far above you and within close horizontal distance. Dunno why your opponent attempted to counter it though, he had far better options.

0:48 - Jab Cancel here.

0:50 - You should be zair dropping when you're about to land, not when you first ascend. Also, not an effective place to plant a bomb.

0:51 - Ike is still invincible here, save the rang for when he's not.

0:55 - Jab Cancel Grab, see how jab 3 gets you punished here?

1:02 - Again, don't go in on a blocked projectile, pull a bomb for some added pressure.

1:03 - THIS is a good time for a nair; that will take him offstage, right where you should be aiming to take him. The usmash was an alright choice, but Omega Hyrule Castle has a high ceiling, so it's still not your best option.

1:07 - Nice bair, unneeded spot dodge though, that was time you could have used chasing him offstage.

1:14 - Jab Cancel. Then retreat, he was too far to follow up on it.

1:19 - Bair for offstage purposes.

1:22 - Wrong direction.

1:25 - Bow offstage is a bad choice, go for a rang or bomb instead.

1:29 - Jab Cancel.

1:38 - Don't throw a bomb at someone still on the revival platform.

1:42 - If you choose to jump from the ledge, you shouldn't burn your second jump so soon. If Ike fairs you then it's over.

1:44 - Another good bair accompanied by an unnecessary spot dodge.

1:50 - A pivot Ftilt would have worked wonders here. His shield was getting small already, hitting it with another one would force him to stop using it for a while.

1:51 - You should really try to break this rang into fair habit. A good player could catch on to it, and make you pay for it.

1:55 - If you're going to throw a projectile at the ledge, don't do it point blank. An opposing Ftilt would have taken you out.

2:00 - Better bomb placement.

2:02 - Cute combo here, could have extended it with a nair or fair. Would have taken him offstage.

2:03 - Pointless usmash, he was miles above you.

2:12 - No bow while recovering.

2:16 - Bair here?

2:28 - Retreat here, don't retaliate, your blocked nair costed you the game.

Evaluation:

If I were to put you on a scale of 1-10, 1 being a For Glory scrub, and 10 being Cat:

I'd put you as a 3.5.

You have distinct habitual patterns that you need to patch up.

You seem impatient as a player, since you often retaliated rather than reset.

You didn't utilize zair at all.

And you didn't rely on projectiles as much as you should have.

Despite the seemingly discouraging things you see above, you do have a general idea of how to play a competitive Link, and you came here to the Link boards, so you can't be that bad, right? ;)

I recommend looking around the Link boards, check out our other informative threads, but he sure to read the rules first.

May you become better that you thought possible!

I'm only going to focus on 1 thing here because you seem extremely fond of jab cancelling. In many situations, like the one right here, its okay to finish your jab. It's a good way to get some alright and guaranteed damage in, as well as sending your opponent off of you and a potential punish on their landing/tech (if they tech away like right here, its still in your advantage because like I said it sends them away from you which is what you want especially against Ike).

0:48 - Jab Cancel here
Nope. Again, sending Ike away is good especially if it brings them offstage. He should have finished his jab here.

0:55 - Jab Cancel Grab, see how jab 3 gets you punished here?
He should have indeed cancelled his jab here as soon as he noticed his opponent was shielding, however this does not mean that he should just immediately (always) resort to a grab because Ike was shielding as it's still super risky and you don't want Ike to gain an oppertunity of gaining momentum against you. The safest thing here would have been to just retreat.

1:14 - Jab Cancel. Then retreat, he was too far to follow up on it.
I suppose I can agree with this one although its pretty clear he shouldnt have jabbed here to begin with.

1:29 - Jab Cancel.
Same as the last one I suppose.

Evaluation:

If I were to put you on a scale of 1-10, 1 being a For Glory scrub, and 10 being Cat:
My, I'm flattered.

Anyway, just know that jab cancelling is by far not always the best option for jabbing. Basically you should only do so if you know that your followup after the cancel will hit or if you jab on a shield.

Here's my backlog of matches from September. I would really appreciate any and all advice or feedback. I'll put a * on what I consider a notable match.

The first two tourneys I played in September are of lower quality as I had just returned to Link a week prior to them. I wouldn't say they're bad matches but I certainly wasn't as clean I could have been. In particular I kept buffering JC Up-Smash instead of Up-air as I had gotten too use to Rosalina. I also got my *** kicked in two matches.

Catana Catana I know we've argued but I would really appreciate your input.

Eliwood took first for Ranking n°24 SSB4 Meltdown Grenoble, a tournament held in, ya guessed it, Grenoble, France. He used Link and Falco... Not sure about his other characters if he has any since only grand finals was uploaded as far as I'm aware. Challonge: http://challonge.com/fr/zn3s57tk.

For the second set of grand finals, Eliwood used Link against BeatBy38_Hantome's Captain Falcon:
https://youtu.be/z2sVYGcazPk. Unfortunate SD for BeatBy, but Elwood's usage of glide tossing? stands out... Yeah... I don't know much about Link. The first set involves Eliwood's Falco if you're interested: https://youtu.be/QqaK6AlJJqI. So, critique away.

I felt it would have been worse if that Kirby was aggressive. You should avoid using full hop fair because of ending lag and landing lag. In most cases, you should only go for full hop fair if you got a bomb, dtilt, or boomerang hit confirm. Avoid getting into close quarters against Kirby. For me personally, I would not approach unless I got an opening with projectiles or Kirby forced me to approach. I'm glad you didn't caught by Kirby's dair that much. sniff* sniff* Avoid Kirby's dair at all cost. Kirby gets so much combos and damage from dair. I really want to see game one now. LOL

Nimious Nimious in general; roll less, dsmash less, ledgehop less especially when your opponent is shielding at the edge, thats asking for a punish and be more careful with grabs especially against ZSS. also throw out some jabs and some ftilts every now and then a little more, jab cause its our fastest move and ftilt cause its actually surprisingly safe. you go for a lot of bombslides you dont always do enough with them, quite a few times from what i've seen you've had plenty of oppertunities to follow it up with a fair or something but you instead you just retreat or whiff your follow up cause you're too slow on reacting/anticipating it would hit. i believe you're a pretty lazy player since you have a ton of habits and even when you get punished for them you still keep doing them. examples of slow reactions and habits:

*Nimious :4link:/:rosalina: vs JPeds :4darkpit: - Loser's Quarters
https://youtu.be/ty-ym4HWcNs?t=4m56s
after like 90% of the rangs you throw, you pull a bomb. this is an incredibly dangerous habit when you're not paying enough attention to what your opponent is doing. pretty important punishes at 5:55, 6:24, 6:56
he caught pretty much all of your ledgehops and punished you for it (though you should have been destroyed there), this isnt even a good getup option for link to begin with.
6:32 what was that dair about? and that grab on the second roll getup read?
6:47, this would have been a good oppertunity for a reverse upb to finish his stock but instead you did pretty much nothing. seems lazy.
also at the start of this match you drop a lot of bombs but this was actually pretty useless and put more pressure on you than it did on pit.

1:15 more rang > bomb pull punishes though i'll not include those any more in this one.
1:27 you might as well have just punished this grab with a zair, or i think maybe a dash grab mightve even reached. you were lucky the zss held his shield for so long but this was again pretty slow and lazy and shouldnt have worked. by now you could have noticed that the zss uses downb a lot after a dthrow so it was pretty obvious the fair follow up wouldnt work. instead when you cant really get anything out of it anymore you might as well pull a bomb or try to chase her down if you're confident enough it'll work out.
1:35 lack of patience, if you read the flip kick then dair was a terrible option and you shouldve just waited it out and punish it with a utilt/usmash.
1:40 wow, you roll a lot in general but especially after landing with an aerial. had you just jumped away here you couldve punished it.
1:44 the lazy, greedy FG habit. get rid of it.
1:52 that grab completely whiffed in your face and you still failed to punish it. thats not acceptable in tournament play especially not in this matchup.
2:11 you finally punished a grab but unfortunately only because you knew he would do it, this kind of leads me to believe you have little to no reactionary capabilities.
3:58 wow. this is more than just a FG habit, this is going full ******. calm down please.
6:55 this should have been a followup. more laziness.
9:00 i dont think i need to say anything else
9:09 i feel like i might want to stop repeating this but it happens so damn often (i dont think ive included all the times this has even happened) but you just really need to realize this habit benefits you in no way or whatsoever. its really horrible.
i also saw quite some whiffed upsmashes along the line that got you punished so try not too use those too recklessly either. not gonna watch any more cause too lazy/tired.

Combination of Falcon Punch having small hitboxes and Link's bomb Up-throw animation moving his hurtbox downwards momentarily. Falcon was still in the air when the punch came out, it would have hit Link in the head, but he ducked it with the up-throw animation.
Easy.
Is it sad Idk how to do that bomb slide :( wish there was a video showing/explaining all different variations.......

This was losers semi finals here at our weeklies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CfOpDeIqVY

game two is 5:30
Game 3 is 12:23

It was a very close set, and I don' think it would have been close if I boomeranged less. I've fought chimera before and usually it works out way better but I think he figured out a better quick attack pattern to get past the gale. I also think I should stop letting him go to smash ville.

Any advice/thoughts?

He went over the grounded boomerang so maybe mix it up with SH(I'd use a trigger for multiple inputs plus OoS) boomerang and over all try to predict his angle since he uses the same one a lot. Also if you A-Stick you could soft through bombs to limit his space along with run off and soft through to make ledge safer. Also try mixing up your boomerang barrages with Hook Shot. This stuff I do against my local pika so I hope I'm helping. Also idk if this is something that would work but If you can land a bomb drop when he goes in with Quick attack, it combos into grounded up B at low percents and you can hit him with aerial one for the kill at higher percents.

Hi guys! I've just played ESAM on his stream and wanted to share the videos so I could get some advice.

Three big mistakes:
1.-Stopping my bomb recovery with an air dodge ( I know tha was pretty dumb)
2.-Don't grabbing the ledge
3.- #WeTechThose

1.- Excesive Rolling
2.- Mistiming bombs
3.- Landing to him

I'm not a great Link main, but I just wanted to share this so I could get some advice from you guys so I could improve my game :) Thanks!

Edit: got uploaded

Winners Quarters: Cat:4link: vs. nB | Enki:4pikachu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAUqXqvrKJI

Now I actually feel like I didnt play well in this set at all (especially game 2), and that I could definitely have taken this if I put in more work so dont expect too much from me in this one. Still, I feel like I learned quite some things regarding the MU and I'll make sure not to lose it again next time.

Fast fall tether can be a pain. Hurts even more to see another Link having the same misfortune of missing the ledge with tether. :(

Hey guys,
I finally had a high level match with link on stream that I feel is worth posting. I definitely don't play fantastically in this set (I missed two wall tech's, one by my own bomb >.<, and i probably overuse jab/uptilt), but it was versus L1 Koolaid who's one of NE's top 2 players. I would really appreciate some critiques to my gameplay!

(I feel like it's not as worth posting the other videos on stream where I play against worse people, but maybe that's not true?)
Cat's covered most of it.... but at least in that first match, did you not pretty much never jump? Just something I noticed.

In the second match, you at least had one time where you rolled back to the edge after you finally got past the Fox edgeguarding you T_T.

Well since I'm fond of uploading videos of me getting trashed, here's me getting trashed and then disrespected by our best sonic player. It's pretty clear that I literally have no idea what I'm doing in this matchup (or in general), so any advice would be highly appreciated. Maybe one of these days I'll upload a video of me playing against a worse opponent, but it doesn't seem as worth it. Thanks in advance guys!

A few pointers from someone who plays a lot like you. You have to go a little more on the defensive, especially against Sonic. His speed is infinitely better than ours (shocker), so we have to play to our strengths. Use more Nair and Zair to keep neutral in your favor and some bomb drops closer to you to create a mine field for a sprinting/rolling hedgehog. Your jabs will also prevent him from just rolling in at you. You were also overusing your boomerang in neutral and getting punished for it; default to faster moves (mentioned above). There were a few moments you committed to smashes that weren't necessary. I know the struggle of assuming "oh, they're open, I should smash", but make use of your tilts more. Double f-tilting typically catches people off guard because they'll shield the first and then move into the second, but make sure they're at sword tip distance to the first if you try that. Lastly, use more Zair recovery to mix up the angle you're coming in at to avoid getting hit with that dive kick. Keep up the practice, and I will too! The triforce will be victorious!
