Here's a new one. Now that there are so many songs and you can put them on any stage you want (as long as its from the same series) I think adjusting the frequency of the song is pointless. Instead I think it would be quicker and easier to go through a song list and assign those songs to the stages you like.

Finally I'd like to say it's a bit overwhelming to have so many songs and half or them aren't even good. Or atleast aren't good to be played in the background during a fight.

I have probably played more non-Nintendo titles than Nintendo titles. But I wish this was just a Nintendo crossover game rather than being yet another over-expanded franchise that ends up becoming tasteless (like Mariokart did [IMO]).

:ultsonic:: Sonic games have been bad and uninteresting in recent years, save Sonic Mania. And his moveset is pretty spammable and uninspired, consisting mainly of his spin and then generic punches and kicks.
:ultsnake:: The creator of MG (who has like three different ways of spelling his name) basically phoned Sakurai and said "Hey can you put my OC in Smash? Pleeeease?"
:ultpacman:: Pac Man isn't a major issue since after all Bamco helped direct Smash, so his inclusion is more of a thank-you gift if anything. But if Bamco ever doesn't direct a Smash game, he should get the boot.
:ultmegaman:: Mega Man is OK since after all his games haven't been god awful like some Sonic Titles.
:ultryu:/:ultken:: I'm sorry, Street Fighter? These two don't even obey the basic rules of Smash. They have multiple different attacks based on the slight angle of the analog stick. Get these two out.
:ultcloud:: Had practically jack squat to do with Nintendo at the time of his inclusion, and Squeenix has given us the bare minimum of FF content. Leave.
:ultbayonetta:: Her design as some super-sexy edgelord of doom doesn't appeal to me. Her bull**** inclusion was even worse. Her overpowered ladder combos and neutral game are just the kiss of death.
:ultsimon:/:ultrichter:: These two are kind of cool, especially the idea of using a whip. But Castlevania has never been as major of a Nintendo series in recent years as many other IPs we have in Smash (and please don't start throwing sales numbers or "history with Nintendo" at me). I personally don't like Konami. On another note (although this doesn't apply to me), some people are beginning to lose their **** over Christian symbolism through the Belmonts, saying that their inclusion is like religious intolerance or whatever (although those people are every few).
Joker: I'm sorry, but Joker is just as important to Nintendo as Cloud. Which means he's not. Persona has been a PS exclusive from the very beginning, and I'm sick and tired of these random edgelord third party picks.

Nintendo has been making excellent games for almost 40 years. I wish Smash could be a celebration of all of their success instead of obligatory third parties saying "It celebrates the history with Nintendo!" No. I wish Nintendo could just do this on their own instead of feeling forced to represent as many extra parties (some of which have nothing to do with Nintendo) in what was supposed to be a Nintendo crossover game.

I hate the amount of third parties in this game. If we're going to have third parties, it should only be 1-2, not 11. And they should be relevant, iconic, from recognizable series and provide creative movesets to Smash. All 4 of those criteria should be met, not just 1 or 2, as we've seen from some fighters.
What does quality of the games have to do with legacy in the case of Sonic? His original titles are lauded as classics, and until Sonic 06, releases were held in pretty high esteem. He's had quite decent to good games since then with the likes of Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, and Generations. Sonic Forces was pretty bad, 06 is the actual worst thing in existence, and the spinoff games like The Black Knight are pretty awful too. But none of that invalidates his legacy as an icon of 90s platformers and the biggest competition that Mario ever had, bar none. And since he's become a major crossover character/franchise with Mario. I agree his moveset could use some retooling, though I don't completely hate it. I just don't understand this criticism of Sonic at all.

Your own criteria also fits most of the third party choices.

Street Fighter - Iconic, Relevant, Recognizable, and Creative (Unique button inputs for slightly varied moves). Yep.

Cloud - Relevant to the Final Fantasy series as a whole. Extremely recognizable on Nintendo consoles. Adds in the more unique limit mechanic to spice up the variety of Sword fighters. The most iconic JRPG protagonist of all time. He gets a full pass.

Metal Gear - Iconic series of stealth action games. Weapons specialist move-set not seen in any other character that's unique. Series is extemely recognizable, as is Snake. He's also good.

Sonic - One of the most iconic video game characters. Still releasing games with a recent resurgence thanks to Mania. Super recognizable series. Move set is disappointing, but focused around the absolute zenith of speed in the game and the ball mechanic is unique to him.

Pac-Man - Iconic, Relevant as he continues to release new games and find success, Recognizable, and his moveset is an all over the place tribute to Namco and his legacy.

And so on. The only ones who don't fit are Bayonetta and Joker. Bayonetta is, again, for all intensive purposes, just another Nintendo character. Her fate and place in Nintendo canon has been secured by Nintendo themselves in deciding to publish, pay for, and heavily push Bayonetta 2 and 3. She's Nintendo in everything but literal rights at this point. So she gets a pass. Joker himself should count seeing as he's from the Shin Megami Tensei spin-offs and Persona itself has a 20 year history to work with as one of the few RPGs to achieve critical acclaim, but he is new and maybe not iconic in the traditional sense.

If the criteria is also Nintendo related to add to your four, then only Metal Gear and Persona don't fit as franchises. Cloud just gets replaced by a SNES era Final Fantasy protagonist. Shin Megami Tensei might get substituted for Persona in this instance as that franchise DOES have a longer legacy with Nintendo.

I obviously disagree with the idea that Smash should just be about Nintendo at this point, but I'm more than willing to entertain that notion. I just don't think your criticism of the specific characters makes any sense.

I don't understand why a character previously being in a Playstation-themed game that tried and failed to replicate what Smash does suddenly disqualifies their inclusion in Smash.

Nathan Drake, Heihachi, Raiden, Sly Cooper, Sackboy, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, The Gravity Rush characters, Big Daddy, and possibly Parappa would all be perfectly fine additions to Smash or better.
I don't know how I would feel if a character named Big Daddy got in smash.

The appropriate reaction would be "scared at first, then relieved that it's not what you thought it'd look like, then even more scared because what it does look like is in fact legitimately disturbing, albeit for reasons that have nothing to do with the reasons you assumed previously."

For reference, here is the Big Daddy (I nabbed this off of some shady site called "wikipedia," so @ me if this image breaks or something):

There's too much stuff in this game; I was going through My Music to set preferred tracks for stages, but just gave up cause there's like 50 choices per stage.
I had the same problem. I persevered long enough to force the game to play its music according to my liking, but holy ****, Sakurai should've given us a button to set all the songs to 0% and go from there.

PSASBR didn't try to replicate Smash entirely; it heavily downplayed damage accumulation, knockback and the intensification of launches, and tossing enemies off the screen. In exchange, it emphasized meter-building and super moves.

I agree that Bowser Jr. needs to be re-implanted. I actually hold Bowser Jr. at high priority and the Koopa kids really take away his self awareness. I don't even like the koopa kids.

Here's one that I'll just hope hasn't been brought up yet: Pokémon Trainer should've always had a team consisting of Generation 3 Pokémon, like Blaziken, Grovyle and Mudkip. Generation 1 has more characters than other series have in total, and other Generations could really use the representation.

And slightly related to Pokémon, one that I guess probably isn't as unpopular: It's about time that "main Nintendo series" other than Mario have their spin-offs acknowledged. Pokémon has a ****ton of spin-offs which are pretty great in their own right, and Hyrule Warriors was similarly extremely popular, and yet, none of these things is in Smash.

Calamitas Calamitas Yep. Pretty much agree with all that. Though it would be strange not to have Charizard in Smash, I'd take Grovyle and Mudkip over Ivysaur and Squirtle with no hesitation (and I love those two!).

Reimplemented? I actually always envisioned him as a Zelda/Sheik thing with Shadow Mario so was disappointed how he turned out in Sm4sh, but transforming characters is no longer a thing so I'll take what I can get.

Yes; they can literally be any 3 of the 800 Pokémon.

First of all, welcome to the Unpopular Opinions thread, where people are meant to post their unpopular opinions with the hopes of not being nuked. Seeing as I can't expect that to not happen, I'm not going to take your comments seriously at all. Nevertheless, I'm going to defend myself so I don't look like an idiot.

I mean "Nintendo character" as in Nintendo has developed (Mario/Zelda), developed with (HAL/Niantic), or published in a mutual (I guess the term is "second party") relationship with. SEGA has been on their own consoles as well as XBOX, and Nintendo has nothing to do with their development. However, HAL Labs (Kirby and Earthbound/Mother) Niantic (Pokemon) and Intelligent systems (Fire Emblem) have all published their games exclusively on Nintendo systems, making their only association with Nintendo. Squeenix has published their games on other systems and works independent from Nintendo. Same for Konami (and I just hate Konami for some of the dumb things they've done) and Capcom.

I don't give a flying **** about how iconic a game is if they have little association with Nintendo. "History" and rivalries don't make sense either. I'd rather have a fighter who is relevant in today's time instead of holding on to a fighter simply because they were good at some point in time. Instead of saying "Sonic is a gaming icon and had many successful games during the SEGA era," I look at the fact that 90% of the Sonic titles in the last decade have been mediocre or just bad. It's almost 2019. I don't care about someone's 90's legacy. I care about what's relevant today, and Sonic's relevance is fading. When Sonic Forces came out last year, I was hoping that he wouldn't be in the next Smash since it was so bad and I just wanted to forget about it. Instead, we got him back, along with his same boring moveset.

As for the street fighter characters, still not a fan. Their gimmick of having multiple different types of the same move irks me. Another third party with the privilege of getting a special gimmick on their side.

And again, I hate Cloud and Joker's inclusions (although I'm happy for Sakurai that he got to pick a character he wanted, some people need to give him a break). They have almost nothing to do with Nintendo. They started and lived on Playstation. Their respective companies have some history with Nintendo, but I care not about that. They're not Nintendo. They don't get a pass.

Snake was literally only added because Sakurai and the creator of MG are friends (one reason I hate Konami is because they fired him). Again, yet another PS character sneaking their way into a Nintendo crossover game. Disgusting.

Saying that any of these characters are first parties or are "almost" first parties is like saying Mario was created by Phil Spencer. I'll say it again, the position of being a third party character should be a privilage and an honor only given to very few characters, instead of "Hey, you're cool, welcome to Smash Bros.!" And like the Pokemon selection was intended to be, I think it should be a rotating position. 2-3 third parties at best, not 11 with another 4 to go.

I've probably played more non-Nintendo games than Nintendo ones, so I have some characters in mind who would actually fit that criteria. I only want this game to be Nintendo only since it's nice where Nintendo can have a large multi-platform crossover all to themselves without other people phoning them asking for their characters to be some special exception or something. But if Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, etc. were to all develop a game together that acts as the ultimate video game crossover, I'd be all for it.

I would prefer if clones were either significantly different in terms of gameplay or exactly the same as their original counterparts.

When there's a slight tiny difference, people will just default to the one that's marginally better since they play the same, since one is straight up better in some way.

But if they're exactly the same they'll just pick their preferred character OR when there's a significant difference there's a an entirely different style of play that appeals to different people.

- Waluigi is garbage and should get Thanos'd out of Nintendo history in general, **** having him in smash.

- I don't understand wanting Geno or Bandana Dee in smash. Geno is a secondary party member from one game twenty years ago (and not even an interesting one at that) and Bandana Dee is pretty lame.

- Gooey would be a cool Kirby rep.

- Ganon should be a stand alone fighter with a more traditional pig look and a more magic based moveset.

- I hate Lucina and everything she stands for. She is just bad design.

- Fire Emblem has terrible representation. Here is a series about unique units, and all we have are sword fighters and a mage. In a perfect world the Fire Emblem reps would be Marth (with Lucina, Roy and Chrom as skins or echoes), Ike, Robin, Hector and Sigurd/Ephriam.

- WoL is the best single player mode we have got in a smash game yet.

- We live in a timeline where Goku could get in smash and I wouldn't even bat an eye.

Can't even tell if this is unpopular given how much more speculation 3rd parties are getting now that Joker is in.

But with the current roster and deconfirmations (assuming AT = deconfirmed), it would be considerably more exciting if the remaining DLC were 3rd party/guest characters because the pool of available characters is so much more attractive.

Banjo would be completely uninteresting to me if announced.
I would be happy with Goomba as a fighter
Adding starter pokemon instead of long time favorites is a mistake.
We need more animal fighters. Not furries. i mean ones that run around on 4 legs.

I know one is directly nintendo and one isnt but, I still would prefer Rune Factory over Animal crossing rep lol

I feel like these two could add up to supporting Lycanroc, a wolf based Pokemon that runs on four legs and is fairly recent. What do you think?

I think this game is a flop, and the weakest entry in the series so far; even worse than brawl. (braces for impact)

A flop means the game is not selling.
Yeah, you are right. It's actually selling really well, I'm just salty that it feels like moving in quicksand. Between the ****ed up online and the input lag. I'm not having fun on or offline.

I don't think any of the potential Kirby Newcomers are interesting and always felt like the series was perfectly represented with just the three characters it has. Bandana Waddle Dee feels like people latching onto an arbitrary character that was made to be filler for "player 4" because we had no interesting characters to fill that role at the time, since Kirby was never one of those platformers where the sidekicks were clearly defined until the Wii came along and made everything 4 players. To me, Bandana Waddle Dee seems like people latching on to "Blue Toad" because of New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 3D World.

The only real issue with the game is that the online is in need of a patch or two, that's it.

I was mostly criticizing your internal logic for not making sense. It makes more sense this way, but your criteria and assertions in the post I quoted just didn’t seem consistent and criticizing something like Street Fighter in Smash for example, when it was checking off every criteria of yours felt, well just wrong. I wanted clarification on those points.

Again, obviously couldn’t disagree with you more on just about everything, but I see why you’re adverse to certain ones more specially now. I still dont know how consistent you’re being as Castlevania and Mega Man as series have arguably had less relevance than others on the list, but alas.

I don’t know, honestly, Smash is starting to feel pretty complete at this point to me in terms of roster. Add in the likes of Dixie Kong and Toad, alongside rep series like Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Rhythm Heaven, and maybe Chibi Robo and you’ve pretty much got every series represented and every all-Star as well. At that point go wild with adding whoever, and we’re already so close to that as is. So that’s my take.

I think that adding Waluigi means we have reached the bottom of the barrel for Nintendo characters. Let me explain, while I always pick the guy in Mario Party, he always had one role in the games. Filler for playable characters. He, Toadette and Daisy (besides Daisy's first appearance) were added to give Wario, Toad and Peach partners in games like Mario Tennis or Mario Kart: Double Dash. Daisy was added because of her easy echo status to Peach, and if Toad is ever added, the same could apply to Toadette. But Waluigi can't really echo anybody in the Mario games or the Wario games, due to his proportions. So if Waluigi is added as a unique character, he shows that Nintendo is running out of characters.

Ultimate feels empty. I like the game-play, but the lack of single player content is making the game hard to enjoy. Personally, I would've preffered stuff like a better stage builder, home run contest, a better arcade mode (the new one isn't bad, but re-running it is repetitive since it's guranteed to always be the same), and a better story mode (WoL isn't that fun, and there isn't much of story there outside of the basic premise) over some of the stuff we currently have. This is including things like characters, and stages. I can live without the likes of Pichu, Young Link, etc.... Heck, I wouldn't even mind if they removed fan favorites like Roy, Falco, and Lucas if it meant that the single player content was better.

I hope that all of the DLC characters are third-parties. Nothing that Nintendo has left is really interesting, and third-parties bring new fans to Smash that otherwise wouldn't interested in the series (like me). That's why I love Joker's inclusion. I never even played Persona, but the fact that he got in gives me hope that a few of the other third-parties I want in could make it.

The music in Ultimate is just... OK. To man remixes of the same songs, and some of the tracks are just rips. Others are just really bad.

Assist trophies are a waste of development time. One, or even two of those ATs probably could've been actual characters if Sakurai, and crew didn't waste time basically making what essentially amounts to incomplete characters (and mean seeriously, some of these ATs even have dodge animations).

Edit: Also, revealing all of the characters from the start was a bad idea. It makes unlocking stuff not feel very exciting. To be honest, they should've kept the echoes a secret that you'd unlock as a bonus surprise.

Sakurai is an overpraised and overrated developer. His ego is larger than anyone wants to admit and it's exactly why he continues to make the games despite saying he doesn't want to make another time and time again. Not because he wants the glory but because he doesn't want to share it. God knows Nintendo will continue to pump out smash games with or without him and he can't stand the idea of someone else doing it

I feel like everyone hates Sonic's moveset because he has two spin dashes, but his moves are fine. They could've referenced Sonic Wind or the Boost or the Ring Dash, but Sonic Wind was a complete one-off attack and the other two would've been pretty damn similar. His normals are mostly from Sonic the Fighters, and normals don't usually have source material. I still want his down smash to be a breakdance, but his other moves are fine. At least homing attack is fast now. If the devs want to make Sonic better represented in Smash, give him more remixes i.e. Chemical Plant Zone. (on a side note, most mainline modern Sonic games are good and people just don't play them for themselves).

Ganondorf's moveset is fine as is and doesn't really need to be rehauled that much more. All I could really think of is to give him dead mans volley instead of wizard kick, but dead mans volley is probably a laggy as hell projectile.

Ultimate has some pretty cool newcomers, but the fact that there are so many echoes and one of the original newcomers is a semi-clone makes the newcomer selection seem pretty bland.

There are too many pokemon. There should only be the gen 1 pokemon.

People who are upset about a bunch of third party characters need to move on. Smash is just a giant video game crossover, it's not just about nintendo anymore.

Smash fans act like Sakurai cares so much for them, when he's a game developer making a product for us all to buy. Nintendo is a corporation, and people keep forgetting that. Likewise, people who say **** about "Daddy Sakurai" are obnoxious and kinda creepy. We get that you like Smash Bros, shut up already.

Calling someone "daddy" in general is a boring, overrated joke.

>Blaziken, Grovyle and Mudkip
>Not Blaziken, Sceptile, and Swampert
>Not Combusken, Grovyle, and Marshtomp
>Not Torchic, Treecko, and Mudkip

Just his Smashes. And it's not even a canon sword. It's just his sword from the tech demo, the one he was intended to use in Melee.

Retooling him completely kills the playerbase for those who main him, since that's too extreme of an adjustment. They can just make a new character, like Toon Ganondorf, if the sword is so important(it's not even a key factor to his character. Magic and Physical Power is, which is pretty much his actual moveset).
Gonna have to call BS on the "not even a key factor to his character" part. He uses swords in literally every boss fight against him, amd is the reincarnation of Demise, who also wielded a sword. I agree he doesn't super need much changed in Smash, but still.

So he uses a sword in OOT? Ganondorf? The Gerudo? No, no, he doesn't. He never swung a sword till the Tech Demo, which is not canon, and only his Wind Waker and Twilight Princess incarnations are actual swordsmen. He's obviously capable of it, but he is a Gerudo, and I highly doubt he didn't get some sword training.

It's Ganon who first canonically uses the Swords. Their forms are absolutely not interchangeable when it comes to abilities and weapons. They've been highly different from the start. They don't share anything other than brute strength and magical capability. Ganondorf didn't start off by fighting as weapons. His beast form however was a weapon fighter from the start in canon. Demise doesn't change the fact that Ganondorf never used anything more than magic and strength in his first boss fight in OOT. Demise using a sword only really does much to affect his beast form, Ganon, at best. Ganondorf doesn't even resemble Demise, at least compared to Ganon, his beast form, that generally does.

It's actually very lucky that Ganondorf even had a sword via the tech demo. Otherwise he wouldn't have it in Smash, artwork or otherwise. Not as his OOT form(which no matter how you slice it, he doesn't ever use a weapon in his human form. He does throw a punch in the official artwork, but that's it).

I respect your opinion and all, but aren't you literally supporting Master Chief, who has absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo?

That shouldn't matter either.

Sakurai has made it clear he doesn't care about console wars. Also, Master Chief has a small appearance in Minecraft Switch via a skin. Cloud's few Nintendo appearances were severely small, and he himself was just as Nintendo-related. And no, FF starting on Nintendo doesn't make Cloud related to it. His games didn't become available for Nintendo till after Ultimate released. It's still not available yet, even. Now, whether Nintendo cares about a small connection(at best) to Nintendo itself is a different story. And they're choosing the DLC this time.

We have Joker, Ryu, and Cloud in Smash. Master Chief wouldn't feel out of place at this point.

I have no problems with any of third parties, I'm just saying they're supporting a character that directly conflicts with the point they're arguing, and I'm curious why.
Never said he shouldn't be in, or anything of the like.

Ah, fair enough.

Though I thought he said some 3rd parties he liked? I dunno. I mean, not everybody will like every character. So it's not always conflicting in that case.

I know some who don't like the Zelda series, for instance. So any newcomers from there wouldn't be something they liked. They'd still like 1st party newcomers, however. That kind of thing.

Well, yeah I'd get it if they just didn't like the characters, but they're reasoning for not liking them directly applies to the chief as well, so it's confusing.
