Hate me tomorrowwwwwwww.

Mitch, there's a meeting this weekend, so I don't think any of us will attend the tourney in Dallas.

Um, is anyone else's post count like totally out of whack?
It happened when the thread got moved to this forum.
This was a while ago. From now on posts in social rooms, like this one, no longer contribute to post count. Kinda dumb, but oh well.

My brother should be going to that Dallas tourney (Phase 5). We could have the livestream up on the projector during the meeting! As long as it's interesting...

I updated the OP w/ all the info
Not sure if I can make it, my friend's bday is the same day =/
Not afraid of that MM are we? :p

Is the meeting this saturday only for UT students? I kinda wanna come too lol
You are welcome to come! We just cannot have non-UT students as members.

whoa, whoa, WHOA

when did yall decide those rankings that are on the front page?
See pages 42-44 of this thread. They are definitely about to change a smidgeon.

Officers: let's get fully set up by 3pm! Please try to be at WEL 1.316 at 2:30pm to help set up. Having 2 drivers (Juan and Rohan) will speed up the process.

Me? Afraid? Heck yeah!
I need to keep working on my Peach, I'm getting this whole float cancel thing down

But yeah, I'll be up for plenty of friendlies/smashfests, this weekend was just bad timing

And I'm sure the rankings won't change for a bit, we can't keep shaking it up every meeting haha. When we see consistent results, then we can alter the rankings

So me and Kyle are thinking about attending this. What are the events going to be? How many setups/people are there usually? (sorry about the overflow of questions)

They moved it from just southwest to best region in the region.

We usually have about 6 or 7 set-ups, and at most roughly 20-25 people. Most don't stay the whole time.

For the record, I think I'm becoming less of a fox/marth and more of a falco/marth...

Come to think of it, strangely there are like 0 professional falco/marth players...

Because Falco covers none of Marth's match-ups.

We generally have 3 setups for Melee and 3 for Barlw. We run a Melee event every time, since there are 8-10 Melee players who show up consistently. For Barlw, we run events if there is demand, but there usually isn't. Also, be aware that we can't charge an entry fee, since it's supposed to be a "school event."

Can we just do the collecting without them noticing? That's how forkgirl did it way back in the bluefork days.

Or is there any school paid prizes? That's what I have done at UTSA.

Actually if this club isn't sponsored/funded by the University, you should be able to charge money. That's how it works at UTSA.

I'm not in charge of the club, so I'd recommend you ask Noc. But I don't think it's a good idea. Last time I checked, it was against the rules, and none of us want to get in trouble with the university over smash. We're all there to have fun, not to win money. Especially since it will just be me taking everyone's cash anyway.

I don't care if it's only a 5 or even a 1 dollar tournament, I never see the point in having a tournament without something on the line.

We think of the event as more of a smashfest. The tournaments we host while there are usually just for fun.

We will be hosting smash fests off campus starting next week (hopefully), and those will have tournaments with a small entry fee. Those will most likely be twice per month, on the Saturdays when the club doesn't meet.

For-money Melee tournament at my place after the meeting? Also, should I bring a TV now that I have a car?

Yeah, we should probably change them no more frequently than monthly and any change should be backed by results of tourneys/serious matches. But some things changed over the break, such as me improving a little and, most significantly, Mitchell entering the scene. Also, some of the ranked players have had little opportunity to play certain other ranked players (e.g. I haven't seen Jose face Jamal or lots of people face Spike). As these matches occur, we may notice that the rankings need to be changed.

I have been told that we are not allowed to collect entry fees except through a ticketing procedure. However, I might note that another club here at UT (which shall not be named) may have held some tournaments for which they charged entry fees (nobody ratted them out). But, as Kal is saying, we would prefer not to risk probation or something over some smash tournament.

I am meeting with somebody from SALD tomorrow that should be able to clarify some questions like these that I have about student organization policy. At any rate, expect any events we hold at this meeting to lack entry fees and prizes; they will be informal, for fun.

So me and Kyle are thinking about attending this. What are the events going to be? How many setups/people are there usually? (sorry about the overflow of questions)
We usually improvise and do whatever events people at the meeting feel like doing. I think some of the candidates for this meeting are Melee singles, Melee doubles, Brawl crew battles, and Smash 64 singles.

Expect 6-7 TVs (3 from Juan, 2 from me, 1 from Rohan, 1 from Edgar?) plus the projector. The projector does lag so we may use it for displaying brackets, Brawl (the brawl players don't seem to care about the lag as much), using splitters to project the finals of a tourney being played on a TV, or some other game like New Super Mario Bros Wii heh.

Incidentally, we may need more setups so everybody please try to bring one. Assuming everybody that usually brings one does so, we'll have 8 (5 wiis from me, Juan, Edgar, Hector, and Andrew; 2 GCs from Juan and Edgar; and 1 N64 from me); in other words, we may not have quite enough. So, bring setups.

We will be recording matches (mainly tourney matches) and uploading to our YouTube account. We will probably try commentary this time too! Any tourney results will be posted in a results thread. These facts should provide some motivation to enter and perform well in the tourneys.

For-money Melee tournament at my place after the meeting? Also, should I bring a TV now that I have a car?
Yes Edgar, if your roommate doesn't mind us borrowing his TV, it would be great if you could drive it over! There should be a few free parking spots available next to Welch.

Anybody else think our thread should be in the tournament room and not the social room? I told Justin to make it in the Southwest forum and not the Best Region in the Region forum originally because the rules indicated that threads concerning an ongoing series of smashfests should go in the tournament room.

I can just unload our stuff Clay and park my car in the garage so there's more room to park by Welch, then when we leave I can go get it.

If you really can bring all that then that would be great! We've never had so many TVs but I'm sure we'll be able to find room. As for MMs, you could start with me since I'm pretty low on the list. We could record most of the MMs!

I think it's great that our club is attracting some smashers from San Antonio. Maybe Dallas (darkrain?) will come next time...I can dream can't I?

so do you guys ever play 64 smash bros?
I intend to bring my N64 to every meeting and set it up as long as there is an available TV and there is some demand for it. I personally like SSB64 a lot so would be happy to set it up if anybody wants to play.

Incidentally, most people prefer playing SSB64 on the N64 with an N64 controller over playing it on wii VC, right?

If you guys could find a location that will let you do cash tournaments or get the school to pay for some prizes (and make sure non students could enter, something that troubles me and my events... however I've had graduates and non students win before, just didn't let anyone know) you could get a bigger attendance.

Having a club though helps out a lot, it seems to have fostered a growing community.

Nike can't make it to Phase 5 regardless due to a Saturday class, so it looks like I may as well go to this.

This club was dead?!

Definitely! I didn't know how many people played in Austin until we started up the club. I'm not getting my butt whooped like I did months ago, thanks to the smashfests we have haha

We're starting to get more out of school people too, which is really awesome and gives me more confidence in this club's longevity.

Good news! I met with somebody that is knowledgeable of student organization policy and they said we would most likely be allowed to hold pot tournaments! The person I talked to explained that it would only be gambling and illegal if the results are based on chance and not skill, which is clearly not the case for the events we would do (unless we do G&W judge hammer-only tourneys lol).

We can't do it for this meeting though because I have to write out a formal proposal of how these events would work and submit it for their review next Wed. If they approve it, we will do one pot tournament at the next meeting (currently scheduled for Feb 13), and if that is successful they will allow us to hold these regularly.

I was informed that non-UT students are allowed to enter our events. And yes, many rules would no longer apply if we held meetings off campus but that should be a last resort since it's easy to reserve rooms on campus and it's a good location for UT students.

I should also mention that I am currently investigating the feasibility/legality of Vincent's bright idea of forming a simple collaboration with Game Over Videogames--they provide some funds/prizes/equipment and we advertise them or indirectly encourage people to shop at their store.

Speaking of the club's longevity, I am graduating this semester so we should start thinking about who wants to continue it next year... I do rather hope some people want to, I would like to see the Austin smash community continue to grow!

This club is still alive?!
Yes, most people enjoy our meetings, believe it or not. But seriously, you are quite welcome to come to any of our meetings if you would like! If you value losing though, it's not gonna happen unless some ppl from the Austin Brawl scene actually come.

Anybody know the directions of how to get to the building from North I35? Like which exit and turns to take to get there. We'll be leaving sometime around 12 and showing up about 2ish.
