A use for Back Slash!? :O
I use Back Slash against campers too. Pretty good despite the damage output being lolworthy (for the front hit) for a frame 31 attack but hey, at least it could be useful for something

I noticed on the 2nd last game that you popped on smash when Miidas was at like 30% and you took a huge chunk of damage for it, what were you trying to accomplish with smash when the the ROB was still so healthy?
Whenever I pop on Shield or Smash at the start of the game it's always purely for experimentation. It did not work out so well in that case, but I thought it was worth trying. Smash still has its ups and downs on an opponent at such low percents.

It's easier than you think since shield can negate all of his projectiles, especially if you power shield them.
I had been powershielding, but wifi hinders that as well as following up on it. When I went wild with aerials that was just me getting really impatient.

I would say you used too much speed. I find speed not really that useful in this MU since it's much easier to keep getting smacked around by the projectiles. It's also harder to control Shulk in speed, especially online with a bunch of projectiles flying around you.
I try not to use Speed so much if the connection is bothersome. That was just another impatient tendency. I ended up literally running into projectiles at every turn. I know what you mean.

Thanks for the advice. Gonna implement this as soon as possible.

Got a cool video for you guys!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIkXnDxNuCM

It's a Shulk Jab Lock vid I made. Some jab lock stuff was floating around but there was no solid video material so I decided to cook one up real quick. I'm also thinking of creating a thread/ use an existing thread to compile percent data on every single character. I would love if you guys could help me out! I basically fleshed out Link and I will post all the info I found in the new/ existing thread. Soooo yea : 3

Lots of spacing mistakes and a missed punish costs me the set. I should've just taken the free recovery.

Plain Yogurt:4shulk: vs. TGS | Puppeh:4sheik:
After a bad first game where I lost my jump and SD'd followed by a basic Bouncing Fish kill, I feel like I played pretty well despite Sheik being Sheik, though Puppeh definitely had a few missteps. But I capitalized on them, which I would say is a skill in its own right. Also, screw FD in general. Stupid top 8 Bo5 rules wouldn't let me ban it.

As a side note, geez commentators I know Shulk's an uncommon pick and some of my art choices were a little questionable at times but man you'd think I stumbled into top 8 at a 53 man tourney on accident the way they discussed my arts. :ohwell: That Sheik string in game 3 they were saying happened because I went Shield did 25 damage and only put me slightly off stage. Yeah I got chased real bad afterwards but it wasn't as bad as it looked imo.

When it comes to Shulk all commentators make me cringe xD They have noooo clue what they are talking about half the time.

I only had time to watch the Sheik set for now, pretty good stuff :D

Two random thoughts I had while watching:
- It may seem risky but I'd recommend using Smash art more when you're around 100% in neutral/advantage and going for the kill since the extra knockback you take allows you to escape most of Sheik's kill setups such as Dthrow > Uair traps and makes you more likely to get the kill first :) (well, depending on how well your opponent plays the neutral, you might also prefer to stick to Speed and activate Smash once you've gained stage control)

- Also, when Sheik doesn't recover low and you're standing near the ledge, some players tend to try and use bouncing fish on you to get some space (you got caught a few times by it ^^) so if you feel it's coming, you can bait it and roll away or spotdodge(it's harder to punish if you just shield). It gives you a free Fsmash/Usmash punish :D

Japanese Shulk Kuritako vs. Chtap (Villager)

Interesting play style, tons of Jump and Buster usage and minimal Speed usage. Also does some FH airdodge approaches which is kinda interesting
Yea I almost never use speed against Villager- it's a great way to eat slingshots to the face much easier xD Buster soooo good against Villy, and I resort to jump for them edgeguard opportunities.

I'm also quite the buster/jump user and I approve of this guy's footage. Well, his buster damage output could use a lot of work (his spacing with buster though is on point) but his jump art usage is a 10/10. He needs to learn better kill-set ups or reads though

This was a match I had on Anther's Ladder. This was also a test to see what the Smash 4 YouTube feature was all about. The framerate takes a hit, you can't trim anything, and it took 20 minutes to upload, but hey, at least it's functional.

Anyway, there is a demonstration of Buster MADTD right around the 30 second mark. The fact that an Anther's Ladder player, while not super skilled, got KO'd from a Buster down throw setup gives me great hope for this tech. I think it also especially wrecks Bowser because he's so heavy.

Hey guys. I've been wanting to post some videos on the thread for a while, and now I finally can. These matches came from a tournament I went to last Sunday. I managed to place 5th in the tournament, so I'm happy with how I did. Unfortunately, not all of my matches were on Stream, so I can only upload what I got.

1st Match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYDrCisa09I - Luigi vs Shulk

2nd Match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XngIwsY2Auw - Ness vs Shulk

3rd Match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tcoLGDdLyg - Link vs Shulk

A lot of these guys like to hang back and go for a grab, so it got a little hard to get started. Also, I still have no idea how I fight even after 8 months with this character, so if anyone can give me an idea, I'd really appreciate that.

* You might hear the Street Fighter Announcer and Dudley playing in the background since I was next to a SF IV set-up, but it didn't bother me too much.

Hey, here's the only set I got to play on stream at last Sunday's tournament :)

vs Dedepouilleur :4pacman:/:4rob:

Even though I won, I gotta stop running into so many of ROB's projectiles xD I kinda got reckless around the end of game 2 and it nearly cost me the game ^^

The only set I got to play on stream at Summit (spoiler alert: I bustered out again :urg:)

vs. TanTaco :4kirby:

I knew it was going to be a shaky set since I have... practically no experience in this MU. Grabbing Kirby OOS is practically impossible if he decides to duck/dtilt, yet I kept trying to do it. There's a lot of things I'd do differently if I had the chance to run it back. I also died to the glitch game 1, so you can see me shout some profanity and laugh at myself when it happens.

Unrelated, but still worth sharing for the Shulk footage: here's five games of @ erico9001 erico9001 tossing me around in Shulk dittos. We should count ourself lucky as Shulk players in that our ditto is so much fun to play.

Well hasn't it been a clean 3000 years. I actually have a video of my Shulk vs my boy PlasticPoptart's Pit in a Bo5 set. Featuring analysis, observations, SDs and Back Slash

Thank-you for posting these dittos we had! I had a good time.

Also, that up b glitch you had on game 1 of the streamed match was really unfortunate. I wonder if an e-mail to Nintendo could do anything for my goal to get that patched...

@ Virum Virum Wow, very fun matches to watch! It is fun for me, because I can tell you're having fun. Also, I'm noticing that you're making many interesting, creative choices. I am not referring to Monado Art choices, because you actually seem to choose fairly similar arts to what I choose (when I don't use decisive/hyper). Instead, what I enjoy are your set-ups, your mix-ups, and general 'let's try this out' stuff. You just seem to be very creative in the matches, and I like that.
- I should say I did not have the sound on, so I did not get any of your voice-over. I do that for good reasons regardless of who is playing or commentating, so it has nothing to do with you.
~~Roy is nice too, but I see more thoughts with Shulk. I like thought *shrugs*.
Thanks for the show!

I think if there's popular demand, players could just reserve posts to update their list of matches at their own accord, and have the permalink to said post in the OP under their name.

I think most of you know what I'm talking about already.

Holy frick I feel myself leveling up just watching these. Y'all are so CLEAN with your cancels! I gotta Bair cancel more... And like I believe @ Virum Virum was saying in the moveset thread Air Slash looks like it's gonna be the truth as Shulk's game develops for that delicious mid-range punish option.

Fantastic stuff.

I agree with airslash. I've been doing a lot more speed art full hop fair into airslash- and if you catch your opponent in the corner it can kill from like 60-80% which is craaaazy. Air slash is sooo good- it is fast-comes out quick, does good damage depending on the art and has considerable killing power depending on the art and where you use it.

The set with Kels and Artryuu for example a majority of her kills were from airslash.

Hey there! I'm posting 2 links to some random replay videos I posted to some of my own Shulk gameplay. Which for some reason I have next to no replays. XD I'd be very grateful if I could get some feedback on my Shulk!! Also I'm hoping I'm doing this properly since I'm rather new to Smashboards or at least the forum part! :p

Help yourself to some vids from the Well Played monthly in Toronto from September.

My only streamed set:
Paradigm :4shulk: vs Ray Kalm :4ganondorf:
I was pretty happy with how I did, considering that I expected much worse from myself. Mainly sad about my missed tech during CS's transition game 2, otherwise I think I played the MU as best as I could. In Game 1, getting impatient for the kill cost me my stock, so I tried to be more patient Game 2. I think my adjustments and counter pick were decent. Shoutouts Jerm for telling me not to roll behind after a flame choke so I didn't die at 3:15. I should stop trying to shield grab Ganon's properly spaced fair. And, erm, maybe DI better? Oops.

Also, Jerm's two streamed sets:
Jerm :4shulk:vs SpaceDong :4fox:
Official tourney rules state that Jerm must face every Fox main available, sorry that's how it goes.

Jerm :4shulk: vs Hell-dew :4pikachu:
Note at 3:25 : "The good thing about Smash Monado too is that you actually get less damage". We almost had three streamed Shulk sets without misinformation. Sigh.

Match #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK0ILr6SUaQ

Match #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwXG2VeA_5o

Thank you very much, and have a nice day! :p
Well, since no one bothered to critique, I guess I will since I have free time.
vs:4lucas:
  • Use MALLC a bit sparingly, but successfully to your favor. You know how to use MALLC, but I find your MALLC playstyle questionable. It reminds me of 9B's MALLC, but some of your MALLCs did not tip to your favor. There were times where there was no need to cancel and switch to another Art. In other words, just try to stick to the Monado Art and optimize it. I recommend you stick to Speed or Buster in most scenarios.
  • Go off-stage more. You had some opportunities to F-air or Air Slash and push Lucas away, especially with those PK Thunder recoveries.
  • Punish ledge grabs that loses their invincibility. If your opponent grabs the ledge the second time, punish it (D-air, angled down F-smash, D-smash, etc).
  • Punish Up-B Recoveries more often, if safe and confident. A few characters (like Lucas, Robin, Ryu, etc) try to recover either on stage or fall down to grab the ledge. However, a good opponent will try to mix their recovery to confuse you. If it's a subpar opponent, punish with a strong attack. If it's a formidable opponent that can mix up their recovery, use N-air or F-air before they reach their destination. It's better to damage them with their guard down than letting them escape unharmed.
  • Try to use more Buster grabs and throws. F-throw will deal 15.4%, and B-throw will deal 16.8%. It's more rewarding than risky!
vs :4diddy:
And that's it! Not much to say about the Diddy Kong match since your opponent's play was a bit subpar.

Thank you very much for the reply!! :D

I'll definitely take your tips about using MALLC to heart.
About the off-stage punishing, punishing Lucas' up-b. That match there was a bit of lag (which also cause the Lucas' SD on the first stock) and it made me hesitant of punishing his recovery. But recently I have fought another really good Lucas main and punished his recovery MUCH more oftenly and how you recommended. :p
And for the mashing out part. Back then I had not seen the video from Beefy Smash Doods about mashing out of grabs.

Anyways thank you again for reply! If it's not too much to ask. Would it be alright to ask how good my Shulk is? :)

You're welcome! :b:

It's usually...hard to say how good your Shulk is with just two videos. Your best bet, I think, is to post a replay against a formidable opponent (especially how you deal with Shulk's bad match-ups). But at the very least, you know your MALLC, so you're not an amateur Shulk player!
