all i'm saying is that if we don't get this as an option for main menu music i'm cancelling my fighter's pass

he says as sakurai constantly missed the opportunity to have more than just smash franchise music in the main menu

You know, I've been thinking about something that won't matter until years from now.

I kind of hope that for the next Smash Bros game, Smashboards bans newcomer support threads. I think they're more trouble than they're worth and really only serve to breed toxicity and elitist tribalism.

****, born in 2001. Barely missed it by a couple years.

If only I coulda been a glorious 90s kid.
Even if you were born in 1999 you wouldn't be a '90s kid imo, I think being a person of a generation/decade means that you lived through and experienced that time. '90s kids are kids who lived in the '90s, not '90s babies.

I don’t know what to say about that.
There are some threads like Crash’s or Erdrick’s where I actually feel great posting on them.

From my experience on others, it seems like the bad stuff comes mostly from specific users and not the thread as a whole (In some Square characters threads it may be OptimisticStrifer, and in the Banjo thread a Piranha Plant fan who seems to have a bad reputation on the site). These can easily be fixed with the “Ignore” option, so they shouldn’t be a huge deal.

I mean... there's good and bad that comes with that.

The good being, like you said, limiting toxicity and elitist tribalism seen in some threads.

The bad being you're getting rid of the place that certain people come to unite and talk about a certain character they all like. And a good chunk of those threads aren't that toxic at all.

So your suggestion is kind of a double-edged sword in that regard.

I'd rather not.

In general, they're good places to contain specific discussion so it doesn't spill out randomly and so people can have focused conversation regarding that character

Looking for help deciding on what games to buy.

For anyone unaware, Target is having a Buy-two-get-one-free sale on most of their videogames, including preorders. (Unfortunately almost all the good Switch/3DS games are exempt from the offer.) The catch is that, if you preorder it, it has to be shipping and their standard shipping is like 3-5 business days after release date. So I'm not using this for preorders I really want day one, like Mortal Kombat 11 or Anthem.

So here's my list of candidates. Which three should I choose?
  • Ace Combat 7 (never played an AC game, heard good things about the story)
  • Dragon Quest XI (never played a DQ game, this one seems really well received?)
  • God Eater 3 (played GE2 on the Vita, it's fun)
  • Jump Force (Because I'm a sucker for Kenshin.)
  • Sonic Team Racing (The Sonic Racing games are good, and it's like the only Switch game on the list I want.)
  • Biomutant (I kinda forget what made it seem cool at E3, actually.)
  • Code Vein (I've never played Dark Souls and this is apparently anime Dark Souls, so I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna get it.)
Any others I should consider? (Preemptive side note: No. I'm not interested in Kingdom Hearts 3.)

I mean, from a practicality standpoint, there's nothing that can't just be discussed in a thread like this.

From a moderation standpoint, generally the people who post in a support thread are gonna be a bit fanatical about the character in question, and though not always, this can lead to toxicity, which is easily viewable in certain threads.

Apparently a Discord mod is abusing his power and furries are doing furry porn crap and illegal crud. People think the site is going to shut down. I wouldn't place my money on it, but still.
Oh ****. What was the server called?

The more I see the “90’s/nostalgia club” argument, the more irritated I get.

Who the hell honestly cares how old a character is or how old their supporters are?

Literally 90% of the roster originated from the 80s/90s/2000.

I agree that it’s great to have newer and popular characters that kids today can recognize like the Inklings and Isabelle but does it really offend you if people would desire a character that hasn’t been “relevant” to make a return in Smash making long-time fans happy just because you didn’t grow up with them?

(And yeah, I’ll admit I used to be like that towards Geno because I wasn't a SMRPG fan)

I don’t know why you guys think there’s this hive mind that people only want characters from the past two decades when plenty of “recent” characters have support from both hardcore and causal audiences.

That reminds me actually, I would like some help on this question I asked a while ago:
So for my Sonic fighting game ideas, realities and timelines start bleeding into one another and one of the ways I wanted to show this is by having every stage be at least two levels/areas from previous Sonic games spliced together. I’d like some help thinking of two Sonic stages that would be visually and musically interesting spliced together.

Also wanna plug this kickass instrumental cover of Sonic Boom (don’t bother with the version with lyrics)

>Team Sonic Racing (Sonic’s racing games are great).
>Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled (I haven’t tried the other options or have the experience to talk about them).

I'm not sure if I agree, they're little pockets of "safe spaces" to talk about a character and only that character. In generalized threads, discussion of that character might be considered off-topic or it might get drowned out by the masses. Are "safe spaces" always a good thing? Of course not, that's where those problems of toxicity and elitism come from but I don't think those things outweigh the benefits a support thread can provide like character synopsizes, movesets, and on-topic discussion of a character.

What’s with the vendetta against nostalgia? That’s a perfectly valid reason to include a character.
No vendetta, it's just me goofin'. :p

Corrin was blamed specifically for Smash bubble requests not getting in back in the day, and I was around for the Smash 4 speculation days. Just havin' a fun callback to the Ultimate Speculation prequel anime.

i'd go AC7, code vein (though i'm waiting on reviews, it looks decent), and DQXI - i'll probably also pick up DQXI if erdrick gets in to get a feel for the franchise as a whole

sonic all stars racing transformed was way better than it had any right to be, but i dunno about sonic team racing fam, it's giving me bad vibes

This issue is that in threads like this, characters deemed "impossible/unlikely" will often be shut down, stifling discussion about them instead of encouraging it.

The support threads are a place for people to discuss characters without being told stuff like "ugh, why are you still talking about [x], we know it's not happening so just give it up."

Not that those kind of posts don't leak into the support threads because of trolls, but whatever.

Yeah, but it's gonna become a needless cluster if ALL of the character talk is held in one thread.
It worked well back in 2011 after Smash 4 was announced. :p

Personal suggestion: get DQVIII for 3DS too.
That game was my childhood and the 3DS port does it justice.

Press Garden Zone and Mystic Saloon zone would be really neat to see fused. They come from the same game, but have a large amount of contrast.

And I agree that those types of points are annoying, but I think that's a symptom of a greater problem. That's why I always call out the folks saying "why are we talking about _____?" :p
