Something seriously stupid
Lemme guess...either there was a topic that didn’t need any arguments made, somebody got angry/sad and decided to leave the SB thread, threats, or all of the above?
Ok, am I the only one bothered by the fact that Dr. Mario is considered a part of the "Super Mario" set? And that he has the Mario Theme as his Victory despite him NEVER showing up in a Super Mario game?

Doc needs his own icon, victory theme, and stage. Especially stage. It bugs me this hasn't happened yet.
It’s no big deal considering he’s still-a Mario. Helps that Odyssey has a doctor costume and all the other spin-off Mario games series besides Mario Kart (as of Ultimate of course) are still labeled under the Super Mario moniker. It isn’t as bad as Chrom not sharing the Awakening victory theme with his bff and daughter.
Sorry but I ain’t doing Alts also I’m doing the whole series with every character still of every fighter
Even though they’re alts, they still count as fighters...just ones Bowser doesn’t care for
"Reality is often disappointing."

that ******* took away Spidey

The 100% Adoration Rating Trope is one of the hallmarks of a Classic Mary Sue, they can be done well but usually aren't. If you do a 100% Adoration Rating character, it should probably not be the main character (not that this can't work, Po in the Kung-Fu Panda sequels is universally loved by the people in his village, but you rarely ever stay there so it doesn't really come up).
Anything can be done well if the writer has the skill to do it. In my experience, 100% adoration works best with a youthful audience. Flawed heroes are more interesting to read about as an adult and likely more fun to write.

What's going on? Are we claiming Pokemon or something?

  1. Primarily, a dedication to doing the right thing. That's the quintessential hero quality. The most unlikable protagonists, to me, are ones that make needlessly selfish or petty decisions. Not that the protagonist has to be perfect or flawless, but just that they aren't consistently inconsiderate of the people and world around them, or don't make any monumental decisions that come across as self-centered.
  2. It definitely can be offputting, and with how much emphasis is put on cosmetics and character customization nowadays, having a protagonist with an unappealing design might turn away potential players, even if the charcter's personality is likable.
  3. I think that the "mute, blank-slate" protagonist is a little overused nowadays. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, as it offers the advantage of making it easier for the player to become immersed in the character and the world. However, there are times when it's used even when it doesn't make sense. The gaming landscape could use more protagonists who are actual written characters, rather than just mannequins for the player to control. Thankfully, we got a lot of well-written protagonist characters last year (Celeste, God of War, Spider-Man come to my mind).
Speaking of protagonists, I think people should give this a watch.
It's not about what you probably think it's about.
Basically, Totally Not Mark talks about Character Arcs and how not every character necessarily needs to change and grow to make a story good. Goku is one such character, he's a "Positive Flat Character"; he doesn't need to change, he changes the world around him through his actions and other characters go through growth as a result.

People argued about toast (the arguments were jokes) while there was simultaneously a debate about.... stuff.

I don't completely understand what's going on here (I mean... I never do, but that's beside the point), but if we're claiming Pokemon:

I claim the super-cute shooting star, Jirachi.

Speaking of Pokemon, I don't think anyone suggested one or a few that fit me.

*is starting to feel left out* :(

All I know is that I'm creative, but also timid and short-tempered.
I almost wanna claim Ralts because of its timidity (well, if emotions of hostility happen), but it lacks the short temper I have.

Short-Tempered = easy to set off.

So what's everyone's predictions for the next direct? Doesn't have to be Smash related.

What I'm thinking.

-Pokemon Gen 8 announced
-Metroid Prime Trilogy announced
-Release date for Fire Emblem: Three Houses
-Joker gameplay and release date announcement
-Next Smash DLC character reveal

Yes, and she's exactly what you think she is...

Her Pokedex entry:
"Salazzle, the Toxic Lizard Pokémon. A Poison and Fire type, and the evolved form of Salandit. Its poisonous gas contains lots of pheromones that attract male Salandit."
I know I've said it at least twice before in this thread, but Salazzle is an example of Game Freak trying to make a Pokémon who the internet would gawk over.

Pokémon ain't just a kids game anymore.

I really wouldn't expect Pokemon, though

Pokemon announcements usually get their own separate direct...

The Pokemon Company likes to do their own thing, the first glimpse of Gen 8 will be in a separate Pokemon Direct.

That's a scary thought of what I'd be. Timid yes, but seems to lack the "rage/angry" type of short-tempered, or at least the way it looks just doesn't seem like it. Its type of temper makes me think of when an alarm goes off, but not the rage type. At least you tried though. D:

Here's my "I already know it'll never happen but I'm putting it out there anyway" prediction.

Given to people through a code distributed at the theaters, a Detective Pikachu Echo with voice clips from Ryan Reynolds is added in Smash.

I loved this video. It explained everything perfectly.
I honestly really like Goku and I used to be a large fan of DBZ, but the idea of him being in Smash has always baffled me.

C'mon...

Who's gonna claim this one?
I was never really a fan of Salazzle.

When Salandit was first revealed, I always thought about how cool it’s evolution could look like similar to previous reptilian Pokémon lines. It was until I learned that only females could evolve and how it’s evolution had a more feminine look that I didn’t really like, and there was a lot to be desired.

There was one concept art I ran into that captured what I was looking for the most...

But sadly, this was like the only really good one I was able to find, because Salazzle was literal fandom bait.

Dammit Game Freak.

Yeah, characters don't need to be dynamic in order to be good or interesting. One of the complaints people have about Superman is that he's such a "boy scout" that never undergoes any major shifts in character, and that the only way to make him interesting is to make him evil, but there are some damn good Superman stories out there from people who really dig into the character without making him evil.

However, I do have an issue with Goku/DragonBall, though, because none the characters who are dynamic never get proper spotlight. I tried watching DragonBall Z for the first time like a decade ago when they started airing Kai on Nickelodeon, and I stopped about halfway through the Cell Saga when I realized "Okay wait, all this ever amounts to is the other characters having to stand around and wait for Goku to come in and solve everything." Like, there are moments when Piccolo, Vegeta, Tien, and other characters could have surprising and satisfying moments of victory, but the antagonist just shrugs off their attacks in order to make Goku look so much more powerful by comparison in the end.

Shows with similar setups get around this issue without much difficulty. Going back to DC coincidentally, the old Justice League cartoon had a cast of 6 very different characters, and it was anyone's guess which one of them might be the key hero in any given episode or against any particular villain. Each character was given time in the spotlight. If it was written more like DBZ, each character would just get battered around in order to make the villain seem more threatening for when Superman showed up.

1. Give them flaws. Not only does it makes them more interesting, but it makes them more relatable too.
Any character should have flaws by default, I believe the part about that makes a character interesting and relatable is how they respond to/how they deal with those flaws. That’s the area where strong characters can shine.

Hehe, even the hypothetical male design has to be eye-candy. The Salandit line is truly something to behold

That would be my guess. Along with a remake/remaster/release to switch version of Secret of Mana & Final fantasy: Mystic Quest since those trademarks just recently got renewed by Nintendo or something (saw a quick flash on a gaming sight about it; didn't fully read it lol).

Here's the link; it's from an article on Siliconera
