Banjo wouldn't get in as a Western rep, he'd get in to fulfill fan desires and/or make closer ties with Microsoft. The only reason why people bring up the whole Western and Japanese thing is because people act like Western characters are impossible, with some people even acting like Sakurai is very prejudiced when it should be fairly apparent that isn't the case based on the Shovel Knight AT, him listening to Western fans, him bothering to come over to the West anyway and letting a translator help him, and him liking Western games including Minecraft.
I don't think there is a thing as Western picks but I would argue that Japanese ones are more likely due to the fact that, these are companies that have long-standing relationships with Nintendo and Sakurai so negotiations are easier especially since they also share same work culture and language. I don't think a character from a Western company is impossible, but at the same time is something that is not guaranteed.

Um... I like how Incineroar is represented in Smash.

That's the best you'll get out of me. @Noipoi
I can say the same for :ultkrool:.
He usually acts royal and pompous in his animations,

yet the very second he gets hit or messes up, he gets super nervous, or just straight up starts freaking out.

As one of the people who believes it will only be Japanese 3rd parties, I can firmly say it’s got nothing to do with prejudice. Picking Shovel Knight as an Assist Trophy is quite different than making him a playable character.

For the playable character, communication would involved boarding flights, which costs money, as opposed to driving to Capcom, Namco, or Atlus and going over materials. It’s not impossible for a western character to get into Smash. But so far there hasn’t been a western 3rd party, and the obligations that would come with it make it much more difficult to carry out as efficiently as Japanese 3rd parties.

Remember kids, if you want to know when we'll see the next DLC fighter then we have E3 around the corner, and we also have EVO just two months after it. These two events are very likely to have fighter reveals. After those two we have two DLC slots left, one will be revealed on an October direct, and the final one will be revealed on a December/January direct. This is how I imagine the reveal schedule will look like, seems spread out quite well.

So what ideas do y’all have for stage builder? Looks like we have much more control over it now than ever before.

I’m real interested about that teleport mechanic in stagebuilder, I don’t thing we’ve had stages with portals before. Seems like it could lead to some fun gameplay shenanigans. I wonder if any of the other DLC stages will utilize these new portals?
I use Stage Builder for one thing.

Good old Smashketball.

I agree. "Reps" don't really exist in that sense anyway. Sakurai will represent a franchise if it has done something significant or is popular. Being from the West means nothing.

But more importantly, he's thinking less about reps and more about "Will this be a cool and fun character?"

There's also precedent for Nintendo doing Smash reveals at EVO with the announcement of the August Direct last year, so it's pretty likely.

Still though, that hasn’t stopped the numerous times in recent history where Nintendo has licensed out its properties to Western devs (Mario + Rabbids, Starlink, Minecraft Mario Mash-up Pack, Cadence of Hyrule, ect.) so, what exactly makes the reverse more difficult?

If by some ****ed up, strange way Reggie leaks Smash I'll explode.
Hello. It's me Reggie.

Animal Crossing New Leaf for 3DS will be the next characters in Smash Bros.

That's all the time I have for today. I am going to go back to playing Animal Crossing New Leaf on my Nintendo 3DS. Good bye.

This is true. But it's why Microsoft can really be the only Western developer in the running.

They have the resources and have in recent years been more than happy to expend them. Phil Spencer's "make the Xbox brand cool again" campaign has earned him a seat at the table with the rest of Microsoft, and Satya Nadella is seemingly very on board with the approach of pushing Xbox onto other platforms. If Microsoft reached out to Nintendo and put the effort in-- flights to Japan for in-person negotiations and sharing gameplay concepts and the like-- they could potentially "win" their way into Nintendo's favor for that DLC spot. If they were already negotiating for the rumored Xbox-on-Switch development, assuming that's true, then they already have a built-in route to the talk of a DLC character.

In the case of Banjo, Nintendo wins favor from longtime Nintendo fans (which is especially important if none of these DLC picks otherwise cater to them) and Microsoft wins favor by playing nice and giving the character to someone who's known for doing fantastic with representing source material, presumably while at the same time releasing their Xbox app on Switch and making Rare Replay available through it.

If it happened, it'd make sense why it did.

Right now, it just depends on how the levers work.

It would be neat to have a switch in the middle of the stage that moves a large foreground circle between the ledges.

Also battlefield that rotates.

I can’t wait for Sakurai to say **** and throw the forums into chaos
No seriously

“The next character in smash is Sans. Hahaha ****”

The whole website would have to talk about it without being able to embed the tweet or posting an uncensored picture lmao

I know Sakurai would have trouble with costs and everything if he can't get someone or Nintendo to help, but that doesn't mean he's not gonna consider a character just because their devs or whoever are Western (so farther away), because he may still give it a try. He may even get a translator/Nintendo to help him invite them over so they can come to him and talk. Phil Spencer has even mentioned something like getting good relations with Japanese companies in the Inside XBox thing, so he could've even met with Sakurai during time in Japan (which I think was public knowledge before) if not some other time.

One silly thing that I thought about doing with levers, assuring that they exist and they work how I think they’d work, is attach the entire stage to a horizontal track and have a lever in the middle that reverses its movement. If the players aren’t careful while fighting and they forget to press the lever often enough to keep the stage in the middle, it will eventually leave the screen and thus kill everyone.

I think it makes sense that a Microsoft character will make it as DLC but there's no guarantee it will be Banjo. In fact, Minecraft sort of makes more sense since that was the first game in Nintendo and Microsoft's crossplay partnership. Not to mention there are more people out there who know and love Minecraft than long time Nintendo fans who love Banjo.

I'd rather Banjo but I sort of feel Minecraft is more likely. Sadly.
