I will always say that if another Wario series character gets in, Ashley is the best and most logical pick. Magic gives her a ton of moveset potential, she's insanely popular, and Nintendo clearly loves her given all the themes and badges on 3DS as well as being one of the only Wario characters to get a costume in Super Mario Maker.
I always thought the Smash fanbase has had skewed perceptions of what was going to be added. The idea of DLC is a broader approach for a series like this, so...no offense, but some of the “high popularity” Smash picks are like, C tier Nintendo characters.
Do you add C-Tier first party characters that satisfy the people who already would have bought DLC, or go for the big fish AAA 3rd parties that have the appeal to a larger audience?
I love Isaac as much as the next person, but the answer here is obvious.
TBH, the biggest reasons I even became interested in Mortal Kombat 10, Injustice 2, and Tekken 7 was because of the guest characters. MKXL had the horror movie icons which were ****ing dope. Made Texas Chainsaw Massacre worth wasting my time on. Injustice 2 had the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES *GUITARS* TURTLES COUNT IT OFF. Tekken 7 had ****ing Walking Dead for some reason and I loved it. Best part about it.
If we got third parties for this entire wave of fighters, I'd be down for it.
I mained Jason in MKX and used Hellboy as a secondary in Injustice 2, but I can get where he's coming from. Smash has most of Nintendo's big ticket characters in it already, and the third parties that have gotten in are either from other video games or related to Nintendo. MK and DC have several big names that just get left off the base roster, and when third parties like Leatherface or Sub-Zero, characters that otherwise have no relation at all to the franchise, get in over someone like Smoke or Beast Boy in DLC, it's going to leave people a bit sour.
No one on this site is saying Nintendo 1st parties would be as exciting as literally any 3rd party. That has never been the case and never will be the case.

Oh, I hope so. I think her, Krystal, and Dixie Kong are the most glaring omissions from the roster since Ashley has popularity, which they all do really, Krystal has potential to be very different from all the other Star Fox characters, and Dixie Kong is one of the big 4 DK characters along with DK, Diddy, and K. Rool and the only main protagonist to not be playable in Smash yet.

Oh yeah, but remember, for Smash 4, they made Lucas and Roy DLC and only Smash Fans would really care about their inclusion for the most part, as well as Corrin, who most wouldn't know even from the Fire Emblem fanbase, so while I bet most will be big names like Cloud, Ryu, and Joker, but not all are for sure going to be.
