Off topic but I heard there were credible rumors that Microsoft isn't gonna follow up the Xbox one and rather just sell the technology to other companies, due to the fact that the Xbone is losing them money
That would be a HUGE one-eighty. I seriously doubt it.
- Xbox has said publicly at E3 and elsewhere that they are currently working on the next generation of their Xbox consoles.
- The Xbox brand was recently given a seat at the Microsoft table rather than being a subdivision. Phil Spencer now has more power than any head of Xbox ever has before.
- Xbox has purchased
seven new development studios in the last year to work on games exclusive to Xbox (and PC because of their Play Anywhere initiative).
- Every rumor I've seen has pointed to another high end XB1X-type console and a low spec one meant to stream games from their "xcloud", a direct competitor to Sony's Playstation Now.
- Also due to software sales the XB1 has not lost them money. It significantly underperformed from their initial expectations, but that's why the shakeup happened where Don Mattick left and Phil Spencer was promoted. While XB1 clearly lost the battle to PS4, the Xbox brand is on a resurgence and total software sales have led to profits for Microsoft this generation.
- Oh and unlike Sony Microsoft will be at E3 this year, already confirmed.
Due to all of these investments, it's very unlikely that Microsoft is jumping ship on the gaming industry now. More than likely they're trying to emphasize cloud gaming, their Games Pass on multiple devices and the PC market
in addition to whatever the next Xbox console is. Because they've learned that betting it all on one piece of hardware and expecting everyone to buy it isn't a safe strategy.
