About a month ago, I mentioned how its possible we might learn Captain Toad's fate in Ultimate around the time the ports for the Switch and 3DS release. We are only four days away from those ports being released. If Captain Toad has a role that is only as an Assist Trophy or has a stage based off of his game, then we will probably see something on Friday. However, if it is something much more profound. say a character unveil, we would hear our first rumblings about it a day or two in advance.

That is to say, that if Captain Toad is going to be confirmed this week, we would be given the head's up about a Nintendo Direct or character trailer on Wednesday at the latest (though it might be possible for Thursday, however, I cannot merely see it being done only a day in advance).

While its still possible for Captain Toad to be confirmed as a playable character after this week, if they did have him as a playable character, I do not see why they would hold off on confirming him when confirming him as a playable character would likely drive a lot of interest into the ports. However, him missing this week (and no Captain Toad content being shown at all this week in general), does not confirm or de-confirm him.

It is important to point out that the Smash Blog has not yet shown any new information that was not known about since Ultimate's unveil on June 12. On that note, we could get Peach as the character update on Friday, and as part of the "today's history lesson" on the Japanese site, Sakurai makes mention of the Captain Toad ports being released that day. I can easily see Sakurai making mention of the changes made to Toad as part of Peach's moveset for when Peach's update happens. If this happens, it does not de-confirm Captain Toad, but at the same time it does not look good at all.

If a character unveil is going to happen, there will have to be some sort of announcement either later today, on Tuesday, or on Wedneday at the latest. Thursday is technically possible, but I doubt we will only be given a single day's notice.

Borrowing a track from the title of another Captain, this is your big chance Captain Toad. Climb up, and get the last chance!

Hopefully, the Captain gets confirmed this week, and another long awaited Nintendo All-Star finally gets their due with Ultimate.

Would love to throw my hat of support for Toad/Captain Toad, anything Toad. Having him in Smash is something I've wanted since the original. Let's hope it happens this time around!

I believe the window for a possible newcomer unveil this week has now passed. There are still two more days left for updates this week though in regards to a possible unveil in regards to other forms of Captain Toad content in Ultimate (like a stage, Assist Trophy, or an item). We have not seen any new content on the Smash Blog (aside from music tracks) since the game's formal unveil back on June 12th, so things do not look too bright on that front either.

The path of lowest resistance seems to be at this point for Peach to be our character of the day closing out the week, and Sakurai making mention on the "memories" post on the Japanese side of things that Captain Toad is releasing that day.

While things will not look good for Captain Toad going forward (especially considering we are most likely going to get an Ashley confirmation that coincides with the release of a WarioWare game), it does not outright deconfirm him either. It would be pretty odd for Captain Toad not to have some form of notable content in Ultimate, especially considering the push that Nintendo decided to give this game, however, there have been much odder exclusions in terms of content in Smash Bros. (an example off the top of my head is Bandanna Dee not being featured in any form of content whatsoever between both versions of Smash 4).

We shall see what happens for the remaining two days to this week. All we can do now is wait. After the updates for Friday pass, I will give an analysis depending on the scenario that unfolds.

It's sad but probably true Chrono. Barring a shock Dojo style reveal, it's insanely unlikely we're getting a reveal of our fun guy tomorrow or even something related to Treasure Tracker.

However, don't be sad as tomorrow we finally get Captain Toad on Switch and 3DS!

I've purchased my Switch this week alongside Super Mario Odyssey, and am really looking forward to portable Treasure Tracker too! I'm glad it's a cheaper game compared to others though as it'll mean more people will potentially pick this one up!

Regardless of whatever happens to Captain Toad/Toadette in Ultimate, at least we can bask in the glory of this illustration courtesy of Nintendo of Japan.

Here's to the Toad Brigade's adventures making it to the Switch (and hopefully with a sequel in tow soon!)

Since when have newcomers reveals been based on release dates though? If Captain Toad's a newcomer, they can reveal him at any Direct. It was never a question of July or bust for me especially since the Smash Blog is going pretty slow right now and is still repeating E3 info.

I believe it might! Waiting on seeing Peach's final Smash first but definitely got to alter it after...well quite a while.

I am loving this adorable artwork.

Talking of Treasure Tracker on the Switch, with all the ports the Switch is getting do you guys think we'll get a 3D World port? If so chances of adding the 3D World levels as a free DLC?

That's probably fair. I got a little caught up on the 3DS and Switch release, but that would make newcomers extremely predictable...

Yeah, release dates/anniversaries were only used for the veteran reveals for Smash 4 iirc, newcomers have always come pretty randomly be it in Directs or something else.

I'm kinda surprised they haven't ported 3D World yet haha, though I guess it's fine to leave something Wii U-only as well, no matter how much of a failure it was (the console - 3D World sold really well tbh). I'd be totally down for it though. Not sure on the 3D World levels on Treasure Tracker though...

...they seem to have changed the ending on the Switch/3DS version of Treasure Tracker to pretty much retcon 3D World out of the picture: instead, Captain Toad ventures off to the events of Odyssey. Not sure if really a spoiler as it is a port of an old game, but reckoned I'd spoiler tag this anyway.

That art is absolutely adorable, and I do hope the ports sell well. I'd love to see a sequel, and I can't wait to pick up my preorder a little later today.

A 3D World port is certainly a possibility, and if it does become real - perhaps that is when we will get the 3DW levels back in Treasure Tracker.

Not gonna lie, those levels weren't my cup of tea either as they were definitely out of place gameplay wise for Treasure Tracker; however, it was very charming to have the levels included storywise and it would be sweet to have them return. Maybe more Odyssey levels too as free dlc in the future? Ah, I can only wish!

Nothing mentioned so far about Captain Toad on the smash blog either, so seems like the speculation for reveals based off game releases may not occur this time around. So our Captain still stands a smashing chance indeed.

But for now, I think we Toad supporters should take the time to sit back, relax and enjoy the return of our little explorer. :)

Incidentally, a 3D World port is one of my greatest dreams! As much as it would make sense to leave Wii U with an exclusive, I'd prefer that it'd be more accessible to people (especially since I'm a cat person).

Also, one thing worth noting about the "generic Toad" argument. While it may be a spin-off, Super Mario RPG went to great lengths to give the various mushroom folk their own identities, with some even getting their own names (Hinopio, Gaz) or titles (Chancellor). Out of the regular ones, you know who got their own name? Toad himself. He even has his own role in the game, going so far as to diligently run through Smithy's Factory just to help give Mario and friends supplies for the final fight.

I imagine they'd hold off a bit on a 3D World port to keep the focus on Odyssey and let the fans breathe a bit. Just brings to mind the whole New Super Mario Bros fiasco of 2012 – releasing two games, albeit perfectly good ones, too close to each other results in Mario exhaustion. Though I have to admit that I'm interested in seeing 3D World with the Odyssey engine. That was a game with beautiful artistic direction that I feel was held back by the Wii U's limitations and Nintendo's own inexperience with working in HD.

If 3D World does get ported, those levels in Captain Toad should really be free DLC. As much as I love the game, there's no way I'm paying for levels that barely fit the game anyway.

That is true! Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but it's pretty ironic (and pretty telling) how some 3P developers like Square & Sega do more to uphold Toad's status as an independent character in spin-offs than Nintendo does in most mainline platformers. Case in point: Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympics - at 32:40

We have Sega, and to a lesser extent, Camelot, caring more about Toad's identity than Nintendo itself does...

This is a weird timeline we live in.

Also, the whole talk about unique Toads in Mario RPGs until Sticker Star made me remember how Archie-comics tried to pitch comic adaptations of Nintendo's franchises to company itself, but all got canned.

Considering just how amazing the Archie-Sonic and Archie Megaman-comics were back in the day, this still sting to me the most as one of the biggest loss Nintendo's has had over the years doing. I really recommend reading Archie Megaman to see what I'm talking about - the way they adapted it was just phenomenal in means of writing, yet still being able to keep it to mainly young audiences.

Siigh.

So July 13th has come and gone without even an acknowledgement from Sakurai about the release date for the ports. I am skeptical that there is no form of notable Captain Toad content in Ultimate (stage, Assist Trophy, music, or even a playable character), however, as noted, there have been stranger exclusions in Smash before. I do not think these circumstances boost or hurt Captain Toad's chances, and it looks like fans of Toad will still be able to hope and dream for at least a little while longer.

We must just be ready for adventure, I assume that after our next newcomer is confirmed (probably Ashley, who will be confirmed during the week of WarioWare Gold's release), we will start to get a regular stream of new content reveals for Ultimate for the remaining four months until the game's release date.

We could be waiting anywhere from some time in August to the game's release date to learn the status of Captain Toad content in Ultimate, or the status of the Captain himself. The Japanese title for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is Susume! Kinopio Taicho. This translates to literally Onward! Captain Toad. We must continue to move onward with little idea of where our journey will ultimately take us.

Onward Toad Brigade!

TBQH, I'm rather confused by how so many are thinking Ashley-reveal might be happening, after how Captain Toad was brushed aside this Friday.

If she and other kinds of newcomers receive reveals that way, that'd imply to me Captain's most likely not playable at all, since he was given a complete skip during the day his ports got released.

In anycase, why are people believing the release date-based reveals are still a thing?

Because it's the only thing they have to go off of. Speculating on reveal timing and who could be in based on that is nonexistent without anniversary/launch dates.

Sakurai and Nintendo will reveal whoever they want whenever they want.

In a recent interview with Bill Trinen...

NL: Are there plans to either announce characters between now and December or is the finalized, complete roster? Can we expect to see more at a later date?
Trinen: We can answer that when we get closer to December.”

So it’s possible we won’t be hearing about any new fighters for a while. Not sure what “closer to December” means exactly, but I’d imagine we could be waiting at least until fall to hear more. Don’t give up, y’all! The fight’s not over yet.

I mean, every passing second as we speak is technically "closer to December".

I'm thinking we at least get one character and maybe a single-player mode reveal in an August direct. Then a Smash direct in October or November prior to release for two more, and everyone else if there's more saved for the final week(/s) when we know the full roster.

Yeah, this is a total non-answer from Bill. All he's saying is, "stay tuned, because there will definitely be something!" which is something we already knew when Sakurai said to not expect too many newcomers rather than any more newcomers.

It'll be interesting if they once again do bi-monthly reveals. I doubt a last second newcomer dump since they likely fear somebody will get overshadowed. Instead, it suggests there will be secret fighters not formally revealed until after release. since that's what, 3 or 4 of unique newcomers and echoes each? There's probably still a couple more of each we wouldn't know about.

Not looking good for what?

Smash? Sales of the port won't matter if Captain Toad's already in the game

Sales in general? 4th place for a port that hasn't even been out a full week yet is not bad. Even then, this is just the UK region. Not worldwide.
I get that, maybe I am jumping the gun a bit too much. Just a little bit concerned that Octopath Traveler may have hurt Treasure Tracker everywhere else sales wise though.

I like Waluigi quite a bit (Even have his Amiibo, where I'm not quite sure I'm interested in a Toad Amiibo not even if Captain Toad gets one for Smash), but if Captain Toad got in. I honestly wouldn't give a damn if Waluigi made it or not. A playable Toad would already complete the Mario representation and anything else is just whip cream on top.

BRIGADE! ASSEMBLE!

I've finished my Captain Toad moveset! It's animated!

I know we've all talked about giving the Captain small jumps but I thought I'd try and see if a NO JUMP moveset was even vaguely feasible.

-YoshiandToad
Today on Twitter, I asked "Where's the playable Toad or Captain Toad?"

A detractor said and I quote "He can't jump"

A supporter said and I quote "Lol sakuraj would take the challenge and would make a very unique fighter"

I agreed with that supporter and posted your video.

The same detractor said and I quote "I rather not have someone in smash that would instantly suck, or rely heavily on a gimmick."

Haters gonna hate. :rolleyes::facepalm:

I think toad/captain toad really deserves a spot in smash. His big game was realeased before the project plan but not too early to not be fresh on people's minds. Toad has been requested for years and Captain toad gained a lot of support during the ballot. He could have a very unique move set as well. After E3, I thought he was basically deconfirmed. Toad had a bigger role in Peach's/Daisy's move set which I thought would only be done to please toad fans. After some thinking however, I don't believe it's the end for Captain Toad. He has not been seen or referenced in any gameplay and one of the most wanted Mario characters, Waluigi, was disconfirmed. I believe Sakurai said he included the Mario Maker costume becuase he felt the game needed recognition in smash. I couldn't find where the quote came from, but if it's true or make me believe he will appear at least as an assist trophy. His chances aren't great right now, but I wouldn't count him out just yet! I would like to be added to the supporters list.

Hey guys, not sure if you've seen this but:

Apparently to celebrate Captain Toad's Switch release, Nintendo have replaced Luigi sprites in the Odyssey Hidden Luigi Hint Art with Captain Toad sprites until August 8th! Can anyone take a screenshot if you find anything nifty like the above?

I finally got a good chance to play Odyssey, and holy crap did I enjoy the Mushroom Kingdom a lot. I basically completed everything in one sitting I was enjoying that particular kingdom so well. Captain Toad seems to be a big deal amongst other Toads. That struck me as pretty interesting that he considered one of the biggest Toads alongside Toadette.

Felt the same way about many of the kingdoms when I first played it. I was glad to not have any of the game spoiled for me, because I really appreciated the references and characters in the Metro and Mushroom Kingdom especially!

Well, he is an adventurer. Most of the toads around Peach's Castle probably don't get the opportunities that he does, so they see it as a huge deal especially when they hear of all the kingdoms he's visited!
