I'm actually really glad that wasn't Metagross's final design.
Unless that design was tweaked slightly anyway or ended up looking different in the old 2D graphics and later 3D games than it does in that artwork, Betagross' design actually kind of falls under Nightmare Fuel.

This lore rules and also it somehow ties into the lore of PLA really well.
Like if Giratina was one of those giants (and lets assume the last remaining) then that explains why he's so vengeful torwards Arceus in that game. Dialga and Palkia having the same name but different powers explains how the clans had different ideas on who "Sinnoh" actually is.

Would make sense, the game experimented with environments and camera angles that made it more 3D. Gamefreak really hyped that up too back in the day. My guess is it was on the table at some point.
