Not terribly surprising when the players specifically made choices to aggravate the company.

It's a lame move, but like...It really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Nintendo has never cared about eSports, and this is them making it pretty clear they still don't. This thing was going to be an ad for them, and nothing more. If a bunch of the top players pick names that are purposely designed to make the company look bad, that isn't good advertising for them anymore, so of course they're gonna pull out.

As a big Splatoon fan, I feel for people who want to play this game competitively, but like Shroob said about the Big House's cancellation: You don't poke the bear. Nintendo doesn't play around.

Shutting down the Splatoon livestream was stupid and arguably makes Nintendo look even worse then if they had just let everyone spam #SaveSmash.

But at the same time, what is the #SaveSmash hashtag going to do for us? Its not like it's going to make Nintendo magically have a change of heart and do a complete 180 on their stance on mods and emulation.

I'm shaking my head at both sides right now. We just have to hang in there for a little while longer for vaccines to get approved and distributed and in personal tournies should hopefully open up sometime in 2021. The we shouldn't have any reason to worry about this Nintendo vs Slippi nonsense any longer.

I will make my take on this:

The Splatoon competitors did have it coming. Like, considering it is Nintendo, it is predictable that they were going to shut down the tournament, because some Splatoon players made them look bad.

But what my issue is that I see some people defending Nintendo because of this. No one in here particularly, but I remember seeing some people outside of here defend Nintendo when similar issues to this occurred. They're a massive corporation, they don't care about you and they never will. They are just here so their CEOs can make loads of money. Don't bootlick.

Yeah, Melee players are annoying, but Nintendo's CEOs are annoying too.

Same. Both sides are coming off as childish to me. I think #SaveSmash/#FreeMelee are over-exaggerations especially in a year where most forms of entertainment & competition that are infinitely bigger than Smash were put on hold when the issue lies with the Pandora's box of emulation/modding. Nintendo is probably? within legal rights or at least more of a leg to stand on, but with all of the stories over the past decade (especially not delivering on prize money) and this latest move makes them look backwards and extremely petty.

I think the community is going to have to take a good long look at itself (both including the horrific revelations this year) to decide how to move forward. Go back to the grassroots of the early scene or move at a snail's pace trying to get Nintendo to support Smash as a normalized eSport. Standing together with other Nintendo communities is a very good idea and should continue, though it's also important to know how/when to pick your battles.

It's very much a shame, for as Maximilian Dood pointed out, we've been living in the golden age of Smash. Once development stops late next year, a decade of nearly continuous Smash news & updates will end. Competition will certainly continue in some form, but the community will start to shrink.

If you mean that you need a copy of Brawl, if you own the game, you can make a copy with Homebrew and a thing called CleanRip

Yeah, I think it is very fair to make that case for the Slippi situation.

But shutting down a livestream over people wearing hashtags just feels wrong. Sure, you could argue they did not want to look bad, but they already made themselves even worse. It reminds me of the Blizzard situation where they punished Blitzchung for defending Hong Kong's freedom during a Hearthstone tournament. They tried to appeal to China, but it just made them look bad for a lot of people. Even some American politicians wrote something to condemn them. To be fair, China is an enormous market. Before you jump at me, the Blizzard situation was a lot worse than the Nintendo situation. I am just saying that it has a similar background to it, where a company hurts someone for saying their opinion.

Also, it is frustrating, because Nintendo doesn't listen to their fans as much as other gaming corporations do.

I think the idea of that movement is that if you have majority voice act for minority characters, that can make it even harder for minority actors who already struggle to get a role to compete. I see why people would want that.

But no it doesn't mean you have to give up Samurai Jack. You can watch what you want. It's also perfectly fine to appreciate a piece of a show or game while agreeing that Hollywood can improve in how it handles diversity going forward.

Of course diversity is a much more nuanced issue then a lot of people give it credit for and there's no perfectly agreed upon way to handle it. You don't have to agree with every movement but its good to give each a fair consideration.

Well, I’m not sure what else you can do besides buying a new/good-shape one or downloading a copy, if you don’t mind that. If you do that, though, I’m not sure if the mod will accept the copy, since it may think it’s the wrong version or something unless the copy perfectly matches a original copy’s data and stuff (was like that for me with Legacy XP, but tbh I don’t know what PMEX would do).

If you want to try that, there’s a website that should be easy to find just by googling “super smash bros brawl iso.”

I would say it’s still worth trying to rip your own copy, however what you described does make it sound like it won’t work :I

So my sister is freaking out right now because three of her coworkers got testd positive for Covid, including one she tends to work in close proximity to. She's going to get tested herself soon.

This is right after I just got tested negative and took a leave of absense. If she gets tested positive I'll have to immedietly go back into quarantine too since I live with her.

Is it tho? This isn't crunch like with MK11 or Cyberpunk. Hell yesterday we found out about the MonHun movie ****ting on the potential Chinese audience. Or Disney not letting a family have Spider-Man on their child's grave (which while not the largest issue, but feels the most grimy) And honestly, it's not as bad as taking Melee off of that one EVO when it raised a ton of charity money. Still lame though.

Granted I do agree that this Anti-Melee thing and cancelling the Splatoon tourney for Splatoon fans supporting Melee as well is stupid and petty. I don't care how you feel about the Melee community, hell I got my issues with Melee's community. I think the game peaked a while ago and isn't as fun to watch as Marvel 2/3 and so on despite also being decade plus old games.

But c'mon, what are they expecting? For people from all over to fly off into one place and risk to catch the COVID to play locally? You don't sell the game anymore and people would normally play together in-person anyway. They're taking the current issues going on and finding a solution.

Granted I should also say they should have expected issues with having Nintendo act as a sponsor and trying to use an online version of Melee.

Steve sticks out in so many ways in Smash.

But one huge thing that Steve has that the others don't is just the eternal magic. Sonic, Snake, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud, King K. Rool, Ridley, Joker, and Banjo-Kazooie were all huge reveals. But now you are used to them in Smash. Like when Joker came out, the magic was heavy. After a little while, I started to get used to Joker in Smash. But Steve... Steve never lost his magic to me. Like I am still in awe that Steve is actually in Smash.

Steve's reveal was definitely the best reveal in all of Ultimate in my opinion.
