He was given control over the Knuckles comic, and used it as a vehicle to tell a story he’d been wanting to tell for a while, but couldn’t get funding for. He just replaced every character with echidnas.

Lore wise it makes sense that neither could wield it anyway though.

It is impressive that Sakurai read Disney’s requirements and restrictions, and had the trailer conceptualized in 90 minutes.
