You only say this because you know the old games did this better
No, I just don't have the energy.

Also, just the first 2, because Super would be 4th on my favorite PM games anyways, and 64 and TOK are close in terms of how much I enjoyed them.

Edit: also, no, they didn't. I vastly prefer the arts and crafts style of CS and TOK.

Not to continue the debate I feel the art direction of the new games would be more widely accepted if said games were more in line with the originals in terms of gameplay as well as the same amount of creative freedom.

We'll just have to make our own Paper Mario game, with blackjack and hookers.
I really should continue working on ideas for my Paper Mario game

I really like the look of the new Paper Mario games. It's just a shame that they're some of the few instances of a Nintendo game looking better than they play.

Eh. The old games are just a paper flat world. The new games look beautifully crafted. Though that’s pretty much the only thing they have going for them lol.

Also…. Idk. I just find the paper Mario debate ironic considering there are loads of franchises I think had the same thing happen to them, and I get the same non-arguments lobbed back at me. But nobody cares about how I think things like God of War were ruined. But as soon as that damn plumber gets involved it’s a huge thing.
I think it's a matter of tone, the original trilogy feels like, you know. An RPG, with an RPG atmosphere and characterization.

The newer games, despite being marketted as RPG's, is just a bland platformer with no soul, no atmosphere.

They moved to Metroid Dread calling it indie as if that's a insult in anyway.
I feel like most of those comments are those complaining about it being a 2D game at full retail price. "Hollow Knight and Ori weren't full price, so this game shouldn't be either" more than it's artstyle. If anything that just shows that games like those are undervalued on the market rather than Metroid being overvalued.

Although there's plenty that have said it looks like a DS game, even though compared to Samus Returns it looks WAAAY better. No shade to Samus Returns.

People were also complaining about SMT V's looks after that Direct.

Nintendo fans would make fun of PlayStation for "muh graphics" and then throw a tantrum when a Switch game looks like a Switch game.

Talking as if Super Paper Mario isnt an RPG is like saying Kingdom hearts isnt an RPG, both of the have questionable platrformer elements.

I’d personally prefer it if the arts and crafts style wasn’t as in your face with it as it is. The storybook feel was enough for me

You don’t say…
The one that broke me was Origami kings bosses, it just feels like their taking the **** at this point.

Eh. From what I’ve seen of Oragami King, it’s not really a platformer. It’s more like… well… a bad RPG. Like, there’s still turn based battle encounters and a form of leveling up (even if the mechanic is really weird and not fleshed out). And I mean, a game can only be so good when you’re creative team is being forced to write around strict rules made by some mysterious IP Protection team and gimmicks forced in by people who really only care about doing something “new”.

Also, did you know that most of Nintendo’s big wigs were interviewed a while ago and they were asked what their favorite games were and they were all NES games. And that apparently guys like Miyamoto don’t even play games anymore. Like… how can you be a good game designer if you don’t play games?

Miyamoto was always a guy who never liked storylines in videogames, he prefers the jumping more than the talking.

I get the feeling were never getting a new Mario and Luigi game either.

The RPG's were always my favorite parts of Mario and i feel sad thinking about this.

By not sticking to what everyone else is doing. IIRC a lot of the GoldenEYE 64 team were new to video games and they ended up making a title that revolutionised console FPS.

The gameplay guys. The gameplay.

The gameplay was ****ing bland, one of the worst in the series. That game got carried hard by it's story.
I mean it’s not the best, but it’s still better than games like Sticker Star or even Color Splash at times. At least I didn’t need a guide to get through Super’s main campaign

I dunno I feel like the IP protection program or whoever’s saying Mario can’t have unique variations of established characters is either out of touch with what the fans want, or there’s some legal stuff we don’t know about or understand because none of us have massively successful intellectual properties.

They clearly know on some level want we want, they just refuse to give it to us. And the game developers are forced to make these ridiculous concessions to just barely have original characters in a new game. Which is wacky.

What I’d give to be a fly on the wall in those meetings. I wanna know what’s really going on.

Nobody ever talks about the early 2010's ended up having a few franchises to go "Evergreen" and act like mascot characters as opposed to actually doing interesting things. It took the longest for people to notice Pokemon doing it but it happened to them to with their obsession with Charizard.

Sonic did it. Ace Attorney did it, and of course Mario did it too. It's kinda annoying looking back.

I don't really know much about Paper Mario but I don't think dogpiling on someone the second they express something against the acceptable fan behaviour is how you show your confidence in the games you like.

I mean, old games good new games bad.

The fandom is not pretty to say the least, has the worst us vs. them mentality I seen in a Nintendo fanbase.

Btw, for those wondering, I do like 4/6 games in the series (and one of them isn't CS) despite my personal thoughts on Super being the worst of the 4.

You know, for a franchise called Paper Mario, the fans sure do hate when the artstyle looks like Paper.
Which has gone downhill more? Paper Mario or Warioware?
I think we all know what the answer is.
Paper Mario

Normally i would agreee but the original trilogy connected with people you know? It's some of the best JRPG's in the genre, people ADORE these games, so to see the general indifference that the developers have as they chose to go "HAHA, these guys are made of paper lol" kinda hits a nerve with the old fans. It feels as though they want to drive the old fans away deliberately, you know?

Yeah, I've seen the same in P12 vs P345 and on a larger scale old MegaTen vs newMegaTen fandoms. Not only it sucks that you can't criticize any game without retaliation, you also can't be a fan of both without getting treated as a traitor.
