Okay so it's me again and I actually do have some legitimate complaining to get off my chest. I have friends who play Smash like a lot more than I have so I get beat pretty bad. For me it's one thing to get beaten online because after you finish a game you can back and try to learn but for me when I'm being "you suck" without any of the advice it's one of those things that disheartens you from playing the game. Now I understand some of my friends are very proficient at fighting games and I'm not. Maybe its just one of those attitudes that the fighting game community has towards newcomers but it's another to be told "you suck" without any sort of help leaving you to your own vices to try and figure out why. The worse part too is that I feel like I can't get angry and say "go **** yourself" when I know I need to improve

Is there anything that we can do to help with that here? If not there may be a better place for such posts. Have you tried asking them what they see you doing or not doing that you could try to fix? Having a better player be able to talk about your game in a local setting can be incredibly helpful, but if they're just bad mouthing you in spite of that then they are kind of lame...

Unfortunately no just needed some moral support and venting I don't think they even know of this board. I've tried but then again they are using terminology that I am not familiar with then tell me to look it up myself. It's the way they are, they are pretty opinionated people and don't really have a censor so yeah...

Two questions:

1. How does catching items/projectiles work? I've seen people catch Pac-Man's fruit while on the ground and in the air and I'm not sure how they're doing it.

2. What is the most effective method the escape a grab / Yoshi's egg / Wario's bite? Does pressing buttons do anything or is it all to do with the circle pad?

1. You have to properly time the grab with either the A button or an air(or spot?) dodge. That is why you may often see someone dash attacking and grabbing a fruit/bomb at the same time.

2.Haven't found a definitely answer yet, but for throws at least I've been hearing that buttons have more of an effect than stick wiggling. I'd go into training against a CPU and hold shield until they grab you, unless you have a friend to test it specifically with. Try experimenting with AI level too if it does not prove a definite answer.

How do you use the sleep mode music feature? I've tried touching the sleep mode button then flipping my sleep mode switch, and that doesn't work, and I tried it both when it displayed "Don't play music in sleep mode" and "Play music in sleep mode" (not sure if those represent the current state or the state achieved by touching)

Is there a way to enable a game-specific sleep mode i need to do?
I have a 2DS, does the 2DS lack the ability to use this feature?

Hey, this question probably was asked pretty often by now, but I'm asking anyway:

What are the most common mistakes new/ inexperienced/ bad players do?

I'm asking to avoid bad habits.
I'm trying to get better at this game, but I living in the countryside, I have no players in my vincinity to get better and learn from, so online mode (with bad rural internet lag, but what can you do) it is.

You have to have earbuds or headphones to use the sleep mode music and plug them into your 2DS. If you have none, you may as well go out and buy a pair or you won't be able to use it at all.

As for my own question, how can I teach somebody the basic controls and moves to a complete noob so that she can fully enjoy the game (either casually or competitively, but she prefers casual play)? I've been trying to teach my little cousin how to recover and perform smash attacks but she has a lot of trouble doing those consistently, and she has a habit of spamming special moves way too much. I tried using the game's tutorial video and using my own words of advice, but neither help.

Tch. I could use some serious guidance to. I'm finding it incredibly difficult to go from pretty good to complete noob(SSBB to smash3ds). Of course I always do my best to analyze every given situation quickly and adapt the best I can. I keep gettin my *** handed to me and its hard not to be frustrated with myself because I know for a fact that I'm a smart player....There's just to much I don't know about the game. If some one could start me off in the right direction it would be very appreciated.(In a private message preferably)

Hey guys, newb here.

Just wondering if there's a downside to not using a dedicated grab button? The shoulder buttons on the 2DS aren't intuitive for me at all, so I have shield on X and grab using X+A. Will that come back to haunt me later on? Thanks.

Use whatever combination of buttons feels comfortable for you. I've thought about how uncomfortable the controls might be for a 2DS user, so I would recommended using a custom button set up like you're doing. It won't haunt you, unless your hands have muscle memory for the grab command when it's on the shoulder buttons.

Ok, here's a question I've had for a while. I've noticed that some players record their matches using I don't know what and the videos look great. Others simply record the battles with a cellphone or a video camera. But I'm very interested in knowing how to have the high quality record? Sometimes they even put up the percentage damage of each character through the battle progress.

That depends on how "good" of quality you are speaking about. Most professionals use things called "3DS Capture Cards" which are external devices used to record both screens of a 3DS. As of the time of the posting, that is way to get the highest quality footage.

As far as the percentages go, they are most likely just editing the footage from the top screen, and overlaying the percentage from the bottom screen onto the top screen.

I am actually interested in knowing the same thing myself. The only thing I can think of is that they use capture cards for some of their recordings.

So the Falcos seem sorta dead right now but I only recently got into this game along with the competitive scene and I was wondering what advanced techniques are out there for every character that new smash players might not know of?

I would direct this question to somebody in the Falco character discussion threads. This is more of a general help thread.

How do I get good at aerials? Because as it is, fighters in midair are invincible against me.

Practice the timing and the behavior of your aerials in training mode first. When you face actual people, figure out when they air dodge and when they don't, that way you can poke holes in their dodging to send them off-stage.

Why training mode? I don't get any money from doing training mode, and enemies aren't constantly in midair.

Put them on jump or throw them in the air. Money is not hard to come by. My friend is at max already; training mode is also one of the best times to practice whatever.

Okay.

But what if I can't learn them no matter how hard I try? I tried learning how to Rocket Jump in TF2, and I keep failing.

I beat All-Star mode with every character, but the challenge is still not completed? Do I have to beat it on a certain difficulty level with every character? I beat it on easy with all characters to get through it fast, do I have to do it on Normal or higher for it to count?

Have you beaten it with all three Mii varieties?

So, I figured this would be the best place to ask, and I didn't seem to find it anywhere else. If the question has been asked and answered, I'd love to be pointed to it.

My current problem is dealing with enemies with ranged abilities. Specifically ones like Toon Link, ZSS, Duck Hunt, etc who use a variety of ranged attacks to keep their enemy off balance, and then punish them when they either shield or come in close after dodging. What are some tips to approach these opponents so that I can consistently break through their defense?

I'd suggest get good with aerial combat. If not, stick to fighting level 3 bots forever. I know I have.

Aerial combat doesn't seem to quite do it; given that more often than not it leaves me floating above them, which begs to be punished. A short hop doesn't do it because it's still in the path of the projectile. As for the latter half of your comment; har har :p

I usually get by with a mix of rolling and shielding to try to work my way though. Even if I take a couple hits, the knockback usually isn't too bad. But at higher percentages, each projectile pushes me back, making it harder to approach. Hence my question.

Does online (specifically For Glory) count towards the Play 50 hours of Smash Challenge?

So I'm looking to better myself as a Smasher and I've found that even if I know the ins and outs of a character, I'm still lacking basic fundamentals. For example, I'm wondering if there's any advice on defensive tactics.

If you're on ground, when is it better to Shield vs Spotdodge vs Dodgeroll? If launched into the air, when is it best to airdodge so you don't get caught by some of the better aerial attacks?

I would even like tips on good habits or rule of thumbs to go by. For example, I usually have a bad habit of letting go of Shield too soon and end up getting hit by a multi-hit attack anyway. General things like that. If there's a good reference anyone knows of competitive gameplay techniques to master, please let me know!

If I were to give advice, I think you should learn to play by a style that makes you happy.
It may not always bring you the win, but you'll wanna keep playing that way. Eventually you'll have tried it enough until you actually become good. Maybe
Just don't be rolling all the time.....because close combat is a thing.

Check your trophies, maybe you lost with one character and you don't remember it. As you still have a score even if you lose, a mistake is easily done.
Did that when I realized the challenge was still uncompleted, I have every alternate trophy.

Hey everyone, I'm in desperate need of help from any person who has a 3DS capture card and has NOT updated to the new version (1.04) of smash bros.

If you are one of these people, or know of anyone who is, please quote this post and let me know who they are. I have a ton of pre-update replays from version 1.03 and would pay to have them recorded for a montage I was planning to make before the patch was released.

I have the replay folder from my SD card saved on my computer and would simply have to send it to this person. They would then just have to copy the contents of the folder onto their own SD card and record the replays with their capture card, and then send the video files back to me over time or through dropbox or something.

Thank you guys for your help! I really appreciate it!

Asked earlier if online counts for the 50 hour challenge. I'd like to rephrase it. Does the total gameplay x participants thing happen online as well? Here's my current smash stats:

Here's the playtime I've done in each of the smash modes:
Smash: 16 hours (probably closer to about 17 if local play goes here too. Does it go here?)
For Fun: 40 minutes (Team only, in other words 4 players)
For Glory Smash: 12 minutes (Keep in mind that one of the matches was 3 players)
For Glory 1 on 1: 8 minutes
For Glory Team: 7 hours and 24 minutes
With Friends: 1 hour and 27 minutes (not sure how it is this high)

Really hoping gameplay x participants is included online because I feel like I'm really close if it is!

Long story short, I played Smash since 64 but this is my first competitive one because there's no scene in my country, so I never bothered to learn before (aside from perfecting Wavedashing/landing and a bunch of stuff in Melee even when I don't have who to play with). And I really want to know some basics, I can do advanced techs like roll cancel pivot grabbing, DACUS (not anymore) and that generic stuff but I'm still very noobish when it comes to actual matches, so here's my question, whenever I play For Glory, people just seem to wait for me in place and then roll behind me, how do I combat this? I have a habit of short hopping fast falling fair everything (Luci/Marth/Ness), it doesn't help either that since I'm at least 5000 kms away from everyone who I play with I have several input lag, but still. I think the problem is that I overcommit, I go all the way forward instead of trying to poke them from a safe distance, but I want to hear opinions, what are the best ways to approach in this game?

Get close to them, and then wait for THEM to commit to an action, punish accordingly. It takes some restraint to do, but changing up your play style mid-match is very handy.

If they always roll behind you, fake them out and attack behind you, or better yet, use a pivot grab for a punish. And mix up when you attack head-on and when you turn around.
