People are ****. Whenever I'm in a crowd, I think "who left this **** allover the place? I'm ****, you're ****, the world is **** and if you're sitting there thinking "Yes, it's true. Everyone is **** except me" then you're a double bacon **** with large fries Mr. ****face. Sorry this reflects badly on me, doesn't? I should have said Mr. or Mrs. ****face.
Pretty much the entire opening, summed up in one quote.

And whether you do something because you want a reward or simply want to is entirely unprovable, although most people will assume it is because we are selfish.

The existence of laws is not defining reality. For example such laws could exist in a virtual reality game (think "The Matrix"). Anyways this is getting off topic and to properly explain things of this nature I'd have to write way too much. So I'll leave it at that unless you say something I can respond quickly to, like this.
I hope you'll read my earlier post on page 2. Socratic philosophy states that we do everything based on two factors:
1. Our desire for happiness, which is common to everyone and unchanging.
2. Our beliefs about how to get happiness (which can be wrong)

I still don't understand your perception of reality. I've heard this type of idea before, and I'd like to hear it in-depth. Can you please respond in detail here or by PM?

1. I read it and I agree with it for the most part. I still personally believe it's quite possible to achieve happiness without being selfish. I think the problem is that we are defining selfishness as wanting to be happy, which isn't what I see selfishness as I guess.

2. Maybe tomorrow if I remember. I would be interested in your definition as well.

Selfishness to me is very circumstantial:

If I don't like you(because you're annoying/inconsiderate, ect) I'd love to be a selfish ****. But If I like you or love you, I'd do my best to be as selfless as possible, all the time.

Being truly selfless= stupid and impossible
You can be a great caring, helpful person and still keep a lot of your own best interests in mind. Their is no reason to deprave yourself of your own attention; People should just never purposely harm others in attempts to better themselves.

Who cares if someone thinks of themselves? As long as they still think of others, there is no problem.

correction without selfishness and greed there is a lack incentive to be better at one thing over someone. Competition is what drives a human to create
Osamu Tezuka didn't father Manga as a kid due to competition (and I mean before he started selling them), We didn't create The Bomb due to competition (War does not = competition in this case you twits, nobody was COMPETING with US to CREATE the bomb BEFORE Russia knew about it) The first video game wasn't made due to competition, it was made by accident.

Doesn't completely defeat your argument, but those points do stand. dissect all you wish, at the base, they hold up.

Side Note: Moral sense on the net is worse than IRL....there is none. Never has been. This saddens me in the intellectual mindset. =__=

Also there is a nice story about Dr. Seuss. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butter_Battle_Book

Arms Race is the key word.

...Do you really think I am so unintelligent that I require an allusion in book form by Dr.Seuss to understand anything?

The key point is there can only be an Arms Race if two or more nations are COMPETING to make a better version of THE SAME TYPE OF WEAPON, OR A SIMILAR ONE. Nobody except Russia knew about The Bomb due to spying on us, and they didn't start making theirs until after the fighting in Europe ended, and finished theirs not long after WWII. That was when the arms race for a more powerful Atomic Weapon of Mass Destruction began. The Nuclear Arms Race is over now, and has been since before the 70s and the end of the Cold War.

Therefore, we did not make the bomb due to competition. We made The Bomb due to a perceived necessity to end the war with Japan quickly, which we then threatened them with, and used on them twice before they gave up.

If you knew the chronological path that history took, you would know this.

I'm not selfish, it's just that only my interests are really important.
That's not selfish, it's self preservation.

You're not selfish at all. You're just exceedingly self-important. Oh wait.

By nature, though, we are not totally selfish. As I said in Fatmanonice's blog on compassion, kinship causes us to care for others.
Biologically, I doubt any of you are completely selfish.

People are totally selfish. Your best friend is laying in a hospital bed. And you want him to live. People would say that's unselfish but in reality it is. You don't really want the human to live, you want your friend to live so he/she doesn't leave you alone. People are selfish. It's all about B****es and money.

If everything that we do is selfish, what about actions taken in love?

Don't you date people and love them because they somehow enhance YOUR life? Behind virtually every decision that may seem nice, there's self interest. The problem is that 'self-interest' sounds so negative, doesn't it?

Yeah.

I'm not sure, Ryu, it made me LOL for quite a while. I haven't had UB make me LOL for a while.
Yes people are selfish, but if you are not, you will not survive. Everything you do is eventually for personal gain. If you do something good for someone, you wish for them to like you. If they hate you, you want them to stop hating you, thus profiting you. You have to find a bala
