- Technically speaking, ZSS could be considered a "second banana", or at least a secondary protagonist, the closest scenario to that being the two Links.
- I can't say anything about the pre-Brawl Ridley hype, since not only wasn't I present there, but also I really didn't care about Ridley. But I agree that at the time Ridley had a lot of competition to navigate through, so he really didn't have a chance there. However, right now, there is much less competition than before.
- The reason ZSS didn't satisfy Metroid fans is (maybe) because she's just the same entity as Samus. There's a lot more to Metroid than "that sexy lady in a space suit", you know.
- May I remind you that Ridley killing Samus' parents lead to her to become a Space Hunter, and ergo, set motion to the entire series? If that isn't important then what the heck is? He doesn't need to talk to be important; his actions alone alter the course of the series (see Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, where Samus has to follow him after making a space station go boom, eventually leading to the destruction of Zebes and the creation of Dark Samus respectively, for example).
- Why exactly would Sakurai "promote" him from having 2 boss battles... to having one optional fight that doesn't have as much impact to the game and potentially ruin the match? That seems rather odd, considering his increasing presence in Smash Bros (minor cameo in 64 and a bigger one in Melee, boss twice in Brawl, potential playable character in SSB4??)
- I can see how Dedede, Wario, Diddy an Pit among others are more important that Ridley, but how exactly did Ivysaur, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina or Greninja deserved a spot more than Ridley? Heck, in a Nintendo All Star crossover game, the main villain of a popular series deserves a spot more so than any third party character.

I hate to be the Devil's advocate, but Ridley's shadow not being much bigger than Bowser himself doesn't necessarily mean that he isn't a stage hazard. Ridley was never a particularly huge character in Other M in the first place, and it wouldn't really be fair if we had two near-impossible hazards to avoid in that stage (I.e. The flowing magma, a really huge Ridley).
This whole thing kind of reminds me of how huge King Dedede was as a boss character in Kirby's Air Ride, but was later shrunk down when you unlocked him as a playable character in that game.

I wonder if Sakurai has been planning to make Ridley the star of this upcoming E3 all along. There's no way he's just been casually dropping hints here and there for no rhyme or reason. When you think about it, Ridley's got it all in terms of being a hype generator.
1. He's got quite the sizable fan/supporter base.
2. Ridley is easily the most "controversial" choice among the requested newcomers and thus stirs up a ton of buzz.
3. Due to reasons stated above, he's the most expected yet unexpected character, and after the last Direct this fact has been intensified significantly.

I'll sooner take Baby Rosalina over Pink Gold Peach. Seriously Nintendo, there's plenty of perfectly fine existing Mario characters, stop making up stupid stuff like this.
I agree 100%. I'd take Baby Rosalina any day over Pink Gold Peach, though they're both pretty much cop out playable racers 'cause they're easy to make and animate. It's almost kinda insulting.

It is funny because some people actually believe that Ridley would be the equivalent of Baby Rosalina or Pink Gold Peach; he is that implausible to some. I find it difficult to fathom myself.

How? Toad is a generic character. Please, tell me what is so important in him other than he appeared a lot? Giving something like items or telling where to go doesn`t counts unless those items are as important as Silver Arrows and Triforce/part of Triforce of something (they MUST be obtained to beat the game, unlike things like Mega Mushroom, Hammer Suit, Bunny Hood, etc)...or you were talking about Ridlz? I will stll kinda hate him even if i will believe you because of how he looks like i hate some other things like Pichu, Jigglypuff, Olimar, etc (this is personal and only because of how they look, nothing else other than Pichu must DIE because its a pathetic clone and Jigglypuff is a joke character and Mewtwo would be better and i think so even through im not his fan nor i support him.)

And its more like "Samus is always watching"...
But he isn`t important because of that - he is important because he killed everyone on Samus` homeworld, including her parents. If not that, she would be just a regular person. And if those 2 Chozo guys wouldn`t find her, then she would either starve to death or get killed by Ridley once he would be able to move and will find her (there is no reasons for him to do it, but he will just for fun and more flesh to consume). He also started plot of Metroid Prime and Super Metroid.
Do you mean there is someone who thinks he is just a pterosaur-like version of Charizard?

He is the antagonist, Toad isn't. That is the only difference really. Antagonists are crucial to the plot because they incite the "conflict" which is essentially the story-line. I am not saying that Toad is more important than Ridley, I am just saying that when characters reoccur, they become more notable, more familiar, and as such, more loved.

Rosalina was a... strange case. She gained just enough popularity in the Mario series that it seems like Nintendo began to push her into as many things as they could Mario related to see how well she would continue to stick as if they have more plans for her in the future. That's left to be seen I suppose.
It's definitely not your standard character introduction and rise to character popularity though the Mario series often times seem to have different rules to this compared to other Nintendo franchises.
Ridley is still really hard to gauge popularity wise. Given his rather specific regional appeal, the sometimes sporadic sales numbers on the Metroid series, the very few number of eligible characters in the series itself, I kind of wonder if some ascept of some people wanting ridley is simply default when it comes ot metroid reps. Not that I'm accusing anyone in this thread of that being the reason people want Ridley it was just kind of a thought.

Ridley has been shown as a "Boss Character" according to the April Direct...but I am not 100% convinced that Ridley is really deconfirmed...
Why?.....Because Sakurai does not hold punches when deconfirming characters...but not Ridley...
All he showed us is a Shadow and a "general" Quote: Boss Characters make an appearance in Other Stages...not just this one...
Sakurai already showed us the Twinrova Sisters-Kotake and Koume as stage hazards AND boss characters from Ocarina Of Time
Anyways....Maybe in E3 2014, we will see Ridley's true fate...until then, I will patiently wait for Sakurai's Final Confirmation...

You just described me to an extent; I just want Ridley by default. Well, there was also all of the time I wasted as a child trying to figure out how to unlock Ridley, Wolf, and Samurai Goroh. I don't want it to be for nothing. Ridley for Smash, for my wasted childhood!

Many are saying that the DK and Metorid franchises need more reps, and both are lacking villains. K. Rool is the no-brainer choice for the DK faction, and really there's no better option then Ridley as the Metroid antagonist.
Those two seem to be garnering special attention from Sakurai what with Kremlings in Smash Run and...everything else with Ridley, and being that together they are among the most wanted internationally (granted Ridley being more Western orientated) it only makes sense they'd get extra hyping beyond the usual.

I spent like 2 days trying to unlock Sonic in Melee after some kid in my school told me you could unlock him by beating 20 fighting polygons in Cruel Melee.
I did it, disappointment soon followed.

E3 is basically guaranteed to reveal Ridley's fate simply because of the tournament. Sakurai doesn't have to announce anything. He will either be there on the pyrosphere as a boss, or won't be. Even if they just DON'T let people play on pyrosphere, that's so suspicious that basically comes off as a skirt around of Ridley's confirmation.
